GSC NU SECRET SANTA

hosted by JensenDale and Zpice
Happy Holidays!
In the tier that has arguably the most holiday themed mons, I'd think it right to have a Secret Santa like event where we don't exchange teams, but we exchange ideas and teams. For this, send either host a DM on Smogon or Discord a Pokemon or core they would like to have built, as long as it's not too out of the question. Afterwords, each player will have time to build a team regarding this core.
General Rules:

  • Post "in" or whatever else you want to (as long as the intent is clear) to join.
  • Don't sign up if you can't guarantee that you'll be able to finish building a team in time.
  • I'll try to keep tabs on everyone and help if needed, but depending on the amount of sign ups we get, it could be hard to do this.
  • Avoid telling people what request you sent/got, as it could ruin the surprise!
Request Rules:

  • Each request submission should be sent to me through Smogon PM.
  • You're allowed to change requests until the sign up deadline.
  • You don't need to do it right after signing up, but if you fail to do it until the sign up deadline then your sign up will be void.
  • Please try to request something that's reasonable to build around (e.g. don't request Magikarp!)
  • You can specify sets you want your requested Pokemon or core to use.
  • After sign-ups close, I'll use the same DM each user sent with their request in order to let them know the Pokemon or core that was assigned to them and who they're building for.
  • Once you're done building, post the team you made on the thread and share the gift!
Recommendations:

  • Don't be afraid to join just because you feel like your teambuilding skills aren't on par.
  • I'm willing to help everyone who feels this way, and don't be afraid to ask me about how to go about building on my discord, JensenDale .
  • Just make sure you put in some effort and have fun!
Deadline to sign ends at <t:1765942200:F>, and Deadline to build and submit ends at January 2nd.

Let me know below if you would be interested in a live tour with these teams!

Announcement:

The hosts are getting ready to send out the secret santas, I want this to be a reminder that even though this is secret, it isn't disallowed to reach out to anyone not your secret santa for advice. If anything, feel free to ask for any advice when building teams or going over any small adjustments. This is the holiday season, meant to bring people together, and I'll be damned if anyone felt lonely in this endeavor.

New deadline because of the delay will be on the 30th instead. Stay tuned as I will be conducting a whenisgood for a fight night for this as well.

My secret Santa request is from a user I hadn’t met until recently, but they’ve been awesome to have around in our NUCL team! That’s right, it’s none other than…

He requested a team featuring Machoke, with an added challenge of using Mantine if able. After 20 seconds of thought I decided that anyone loading Mantine wants to lose, so he’ll have to settle for just Machoke! I was overwhelmed with choice for what moveset to run since Machoke gets so many good moves, and I ended up passing on Encore and Earthquake which both have a lot of potential, opting for a Light Screen + Counter set to bait and punish opponents for attacking into our physical side.

Machoke Double Fighter Spikes
:gs/machoke: :gs/primeape: :gs/pineco: :gs/porygon: :gs/weezing: :gs/rapidash:

:machoke::Primeape:
It’s hard to justify Machoke when Primeape is a faster and more threatening Cross Chop user, but there’s no reason we can’t run both! These two make up our primary offensive core, overwhelming fight checks like Weezing over the course of a game. Machoke is a good check to curse normals and it can surprise threatening physical attackers like Fearow and Weezing with Counter, and hit Xatu on the switch in with Rock Slide (which is very threatening to this pair). Light Screen helps the team deal with opposing Xatu and Weezing as well. Be careful what moves you let Machoke tank as it has no additional means of healing.

Meanwhile, Primeape is a standard RestTalk set that can spread Paralysis through Thunder and serve as a good check to Water-types.

:pineco:
Pineco sets spikes, Pineco spins, and Pineco blows up. Light Screen and Thunder Wave support can make this a bit easier.

:porygon:
Porygon is a versatile defensive check to much of the meta thanks to Recover, it helps patch up matchups versus Octillery and Xatu a bit. It always has the ability to bullshit its way to victory while also supporting its team with paralysis.

:weezing:
A more sturdy fight check than Pineco, and has the added benefit of drawing in troublesome mons like Xatu to blow up with Explosion. Thunder is crucial for taking on Water-types and HP Water has a chance to snipe Rock-types that pose issues for our Porygon and Rapidash. It also matches into opposing Weezing quite well if Light Screen is up.

:rapidash:
Rapidash rounds out the team with a very nice speed tier, and it serves as our primary check to Xatu and Weezing. Our double fighter core helps a lot with its struggles into Rock-types.
I'm glad I got this done right on time for Christmas, and I hope this team fills you with holiday cheer! :toast:

All,

I will be announcing another deadline extension, this time the final (and yes I mean it this time) extension will be January 2nd.

There's a few reasons for this but the biggest one is because I know there must be a few travelers (one of them is typing this up) who will not have as much time to do these.

Additionally, here is a whenisgood link for putting in times for the next week for a fight day: https://whenisgood.net/q8tn2g8. If you could put in your times that would be great.

Happy Holidays! - Jensen
