Project SV DOU Teambuilding Competition v3: Week 31 (Metagross)

here to suggest an idea for the tbc, I think coaching would be a fun idea for next week. It seems pretty under explored in dou but I think it has some potential that people haven't tapped in yet

also another idea for a tbc, again instead of pokemon (or a move for that matter) we would go with a team style, and I suggest the worst of them all... Cheese! Some nice classic PS! cheese (this could ig also be a smeargle tbc)

Hey y’all! Hope you enjoyed the holidays (if you celebrate ofc) and my apologies for being quite busy and not getting a theme up last week. This week’s theme will be:
:sv/roaring moon:
This is a mon that has seen a ton of representation and recognition at the higher levels of DOU recently and have some people thinking it may even be better then Tornadus at being a Tailwind setter. Have fun building!

Team submission ends on Thursday

Hi folks, my first post and team:
https://pokepast.es/a110f3c47a2bfc9c

This team relies primarily on the surprise of using Earthquake alongside Torkoal on the first turn, taking advantage of Tetra Crystallization to transform the turtle into a Flying-type while it, in turn, uses its ability to boost Roaring's Special Attack.

To complete the team, we have another character, Regi, as the second attacker, and to provide type support, survivability, and damage, we have Nasty Goldengo and the Mushroom.

Happy New Years~
I wanted to create a RM + Coaching team, so the role of Mew is pretty much straightforward. I'd imagine that Iron Hands is one of RM's greatest threats, so I added Landorus to take care of the said threat. Next, I added Firepon and an Iron Hands of my own to provide assistance via Follow Me and Fake Out, respectively. These two mons can benefit from Coaching as well and are fortunate to have healing moves for themselves. I thought adding Sunny Day on Landorus would be a nice touch to make RM and Firepon even more threatening. As for the last mon, I decided to use Gholdengo because I wanted at least one mon that was resistance to Ice, Flying, and Dragon type moves.

Featuring Jaw Lock, which sees zero usage. You just trap opposing mons and inflict them pain with status drops and Poison Puppeteer. Nothing fancy about the spreads. Roaring Moon is max bulk for longevity. There are enough ways to handle Gholdengo and Offense, which are the harder playstyles for doubles stall.

Ladder replays because I lost in the roomtour I launched.

just some funny tailwind physical offense + specs keldeo which is lowkey super fun to use and hits more of the meta harder then it should, not my most original or best team but its solid and funny.roaring moon here is very standard but does its usual job of being an amazingly consistent tailwind setter, supporting plot ghold and doing plenty of damage itself

silly sun psyspam team featuring uturn roaring moon to proc necrozma's weakness policy and set tailwind for it. diakoal plays into the tr mode while hilligant adds a third layer of speed control and attempts to help salvage some dire matchups like tinglu/ttar. toxic high variance team that should be bad but ive never lost with it so maybe its broken... (its not broken)

possible edits: indd set, coaching slot on hilli, various ev spreads & tera types

but I want to add a note of a cool jawlock mechanic (I've used jaw lock moon more than I should admit), if you have shed tail you can freely switch out, but the opponent still can't.

I made a quick team because Metagross is my favorite Pokémon ever since I played Emerald as a kid. Metagross is a cool Pokémon to use in this format, but its typing unfortunately holds it down due to being walled by Incin. Fortunately for it, though, Metagross has the ability Clear Body and the move Stomping Tantrum to hit Incin for super effective damage.

Some relevant calcs:
252+ Atk Metagross Stomping Tantrum (75 BP) vs. 252 HP / 96 Def Incineroar: 182-216 (46.1 - 54.8%) -- 62.1% chance to 2HKO
252 SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Landorus Earth Power (117 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Metagross: 330-393 (90.6 - 107.9%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO
252 SpA Beads of Ruin Chi-Yu Dark Pulse (80 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Metagross: 260-308 (71.4 - 84.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Metagross Stomping Tantrum (75 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Chi-Yu: 224-264 (89.2 - 105.1%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO

Actually this team isn't built for this team building competition, but the current round is Metagross so I just want to have a shot.
I won’t said this team is perfect, but I’m really proud of this team. In the past, I always follow the pokemon’s tier or its viability ranking when building teams. This time, I bring 4 mons under ou, 3 of them even under uu, and I’m not built this team for fun, but for win. Actually I, a rookie, use this team to win one game in Chinese SVPL, even though I clicks some stupid bad moves because I was overwhelmed by pressure. This shows that the strategy of this team really can work.
Here is the replay: https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen9doublesou-2472280422-jwtu58xvugx2outtilqmsc1i9jf29hxpw

Now I will analysis each Pokemon’s sets in my team:
Keldeo @ Covert Cloak
Ability: Justified
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 52 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 200 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hydro Pump
- Secret Sword
- Calm Mind
- Protect

In VGC, a very well-known core is Incineroar/Rillaboom/Urshify-R core. However in DOU, the powerful water bear was banned, one piece in this core was missed. Even Ogerpon-W is a very strong water type, I just think it doesn’t fit in this core, and keep finding somebody to become the missed piece. An obvious answer will be Keldeo, this mystical Pokemon have the same type with Urshifu-R, really good stats and a unique and strong move, Secret Sword. For item, I choose Covert Clock, because many Incineroar will like to Fake Out Keldeo, Covert Clock give Keldeo a free turn to setup or attack. Also it can prevent other side effects such as Bleakwind Storm’s speed drop or Rock Silde’s Flinch. I used to run tera poison but I finally realize that tera Steel is a better choice, which can resist fairy, psychic, flying and grass moves, and immune to poison. 252 SpA evs to maximize its power, 200+ Spe for outspeed Landorus, and 4 Spd for Porygon-2’s Download, else put on HP. For moves, Hydro Pump and Secret Sword are great STAB moves, Calm Mind are the best setup move for Keldeo, and Protect is necessary. After one Calm Mind, Keldeo can deal a lot of damage to almost every mon in the matagame, and can become a wincon.

Rillaboom @ Assault Vest
Ability: Grassy Surge
Tera Type: Fire
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Fake Out
- Grassy Glide
- Wood Hammer
- U-turn

Incineroar @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Intimidate
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 252 HP / 96 Def / 160 SpD
Careful Nature
- Fake Out
- Flare Blitz
- Knock Off
- Parting Shot

I really don’t need to talk a lot about this two mons. They can provide double Fake Out to protect Keldeo to setup. Intimidate and recovery from Grassy Surge can help Keldeo to survive. Because Incineroar chooses Sirtus Berry instead of Safety Goggles, I use tera Grass to immune Spore.

Metagross @ Life Orb
Ability: Clear Body
Tera Type: Normal
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Explosion
- Bullet Punch
- Psychic Fangs
- Protect

The protagonist is here! Explosion Metagross isn’t something new, I just bring it here to ‘delete’ my opponents mons. At first I ran Choice Band and the fourth move is Knock Off to hit Ghodengo. But it feels bad to lock on Bullet Punch against Incineroar, or need to boom immediately when I just send it to the field. So I switch to Life Orb. Tera Normal to buff Explosion and gain immunity to ghost. Evs are just simply max attack and HP. For moves, Expolsions are essential, Bullet Punch is a good STAB priority moves which can deal super effective damage on Chien-Pao, Whimsicott, Glimmora, Diancle, Alolan Ninetales and Kyurem, and also hit fast mons like Tornadus. Psychic Fangs are another STAB moves and also destroy Screens. At last, Protect can help me to test opponents strategy better.

Gengar @ Focus Sash
Ability: Cursed Body
Tera Type: Flying
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shadow Ball
- Imprison
- Trick Room
- Protect

Gengar is a good partner of Metagross and all other teammates. Imprison has multiple use here: stop Trick Room; lock opponent’s Protect when they facing Metagross’s Explosion; and lock Ghodengo’s Shadow Ball. Because of Gengar’s typing, it can immune Fake Out and our Metagross’s Explosion; also absorb these annoying toxic spikes from Glimmora. STAB Shadow Ball and 252 SpA can also let Gengar to make some damage. Trick Room isn’t only for Imprison, when you facing tailwind team, you can also set your trick room. I gave Gengar Focus Sash to help it survive after a hit, and tera Flying let Gengar immune strong Ground moves aims on it.

Great Tusk @ Clear Amulet
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Fire
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Headlong Rush
- Ice Spinner
- Rapid Spin
- Protect

The last Pokemon is on of the GOAT in SVOU. Great Tusk in this team is really important. It can threaten Raging Bolt and Iron Hands by Headlong Rush, OHKO two Landorus form by Ice Spinner, and clear hazards set by Ting-Lu and Glimmora by Rapid Spin. Max attack to ensure power, and max speed can outspend Glimmora and some mons aimed to outspend Glimmora. Thanks to its great Defense base stats, it can beat Chien-Pao and Dragonite pair after teratelize it. Tera Fire is a very good choice, to immune will-o-wisp and resist fairy, grass and ice. But tera water is another choice, which gives you a better matchup against rain team. By holding Clear Amulet, Great Task won’t affect by Intimidate, to help it deal damage more consistent.

:tornadus: :landorus: :politoed: :metagross: :chien-pao: :ogerpon-wellspring:

I stumbled upon Metagross while trying to build a rain team that could abuse both Genies’ powerful spread moves alongside Wellspring’s absurd damage output in rain when paired with Chien-Pao. Metagross ended up functioning as an all-in-one answer to the hail matchup, breaking Aurora Veil with Psychic Fangs and threatening a clean KO on Kyurem with Meteor Mash when paired with Sword of Ruin or Helping Hand, assuming snow isn’t up. I specifically chose Meteor Mash over the more common Heavy Slam both for the damage benchmarks on Kyurem and for the added upside of enabling a doubled-power Stomping Tantrum in case of a miss, while also benefiting from Meteor Mash’s 20% chance to boost Metagross’s Attack. I opted for Politoed over Pelipper to avoid stacking Flying-type weaknesses and to reduce the team’s overall vulnerability to Freeze-Dry. Politoed also makes great use of Eject Button to escape awkward board states, since it doesn’t need to remain on the field to set up Tailwind.

I randomly felt like building a :metagross: howl team and had no idea this existed until today so i might as well share it here. I haven't tested this much outside of low ladder so idk how good it actually is, and i wouldn't expect it to be as i don't tend to build these team structures often. All spreads (except :metagross:) are standard and :metagross: lives Ivy Cudgel from :ogerpon-hearthflame: and earth power from :landorus:while outspeeding :chien-pao: in tailwind with the rest dumped into attack. i struggled with what fit the :tornadus: slot, and i've gone from :sylveon: to :diancie: to :tornadus: currently.
