(edit in post: because the SPL X and XI sheets don't actually list co-managers, I missed reyscarface in both tours and ABR in SPL XI. it doesn't really change much, rey still favours spending a lot on his top picks, but I will flag that for disclosing errors)

Going to try to squeeze in some notes before the draft. A bit ago I put together data about every manager this SPL and their past auction history, and while I put off redoing it because I forgot to account for the SPL XI BIGs fiasco, I have it now. The goal is basically to offer some informed speculation on how the auction could go, based on a few tendencies that I could pull.

1. National teams
The SPL XVI Classiest are an obvious example of how manager connections to national teams can inform draft tendencies, with the team's two US Midwest managers drafting a whole pile of Midwest players. I'll outline a few of those here:

Ruiners: Italy (Empo, Ale Duncan)
Scooters: Oceania (etern, DugZa)
Sharks: Germany (Conflict, mind gaming)
Tigers: Europe (We Three Kings, Ruft)
Tyrants: US Northeast (ABR, blunder)

2. Retains
Let's do a quick review of which slots each team already has accounted for, based on retains:

BIGs: BW/SV (JustFranco)
Classiest: SwSh (damien the genius)
Cryonicles: RBY (Sceptross)
Raiders: ADV (Endill), any fairy gen? (Eternal Spirit)
Ruiners: SwSh/SM (ChrisPBacon)
Sharks: SV (Attribute)
Tyrants: SV (Fusien), SV (myjava), ADV (Shitrock enjoyer)
Wolfpack: SwSh (Gtcha), DPP (Void), GSC (choolio)

3. Past managers
How many managers in this year's tournament have experience in this role? I looked at everyone here who's managed the tour multiple times, the goal being to identify some patterns of auction behaviour. The list is here:

Classiest: d0nut (SPL 11-16 Classiest)
Cryonicles: PDC (SPL 11 Cryonicles, SPL 13-14 Tyrants)
Tyrants: reyscarface (SPL 12-13 Tyrants, SPL 15-16 Tyrants), blunder (SPL 15-16 Tyrants), ABR (SPL 14 Wolfpack, SPL 16 BIGs)
BIGs: Dave (SPL 10-13 BIGs, SPL 15 Scooters), Vulpix03 (SPL 14-15 BIGs)
Sharks: obii (SPL 13-14 Sharks, SPL 16 Sharks)
Wolfpack: D4 Repertoire (SPL 15-16 Wolfpack)

In addition, there are a few managers here with experience in SCL as well, which also has an auction format. If we expand our list to include those appearances, the list is as follows:

Got all that? Let's take a look.

3a. Price tendencies
Simple enough question here. Every team has to spend their money somehow; some managers prefer to spread that around with a bunch of players in the middle range of the price list, others spend theirs at the top. Which teams favour which?

"Most obvious top-of-the-market spender" award: Sharks​

Maybe this is a hot take, because there's another obvious fit here. I'll get there in a sec. For now, though, the obii-managed Sharks spent 30.5k on Conflict last year and 30k on CBB in 2022, and still spent 24k in Troller in 2023. I'm not sure who it'll be this year, but I would expect a big buy here.

"Obvious top-of-the-market spender with an asterisk" award: Tyrants

None of the returning managers average fewer players drafted above 10k than rey and blunder, and no one averages more players above 25k. Basically, rey has typically spent at the top of the market over his managerial career, and since blunder joined him they've gotten even more aggressive there: see SoulWind at 29.5k and BKC at 25k last year. Of course, that's a strategy that requires savings elsewhere, but the Tyrants have a disgusting trio of retains. I'd expect them to be big spenders at the top end again. The caveat, I'll say, is the addition of ABR, who has paired with Tony as a manager twice recently and generally favoured a more balanced gameplan. Will ABR defer to the Tyrants' standard gameplan? That seems likely, but I also wonder if they try to leverage ABR's theoretical support in all generations and go for a more balanced attack. It's possible.

Other teams I'd expect to be in on the top of the market: Ruiners (ima has been aggressive here in SCL, and an old-gen carry seems really useful here), Classiest (yes, d0nut has historically tended towards depth, but I think blank's addition last year was notable in their splurge on McMeghan, and Gingy has generally leaned towards top-heavy auctions in SCL), Cryonicles (PDC has spent in the 30k range multiple times before and this is a team that really needs a Fairy-gens carry).

"Obvious balanced price sheet approach" award: Wolfpack

Yes, D4 spent 39k on ABR in 2024. They didn't spend more than 17k on anyone last year, though, and the D4/Fear combo returns. I'd expect more of that.

"Obvious balanced price sheet approach with an asterisk" award: BIGs

Among long-term managers, is there anyone who avoids the top of the price sheet more than Dave? They've managed five of the last seven SPLs, and in that span he's broken 30k once (for McMeghan in 2021) and 25k twice (McMeghan in 2021 and the traded TDK in 2020). If anything, Dave's SCL teams are even more middle-heavy: I count that he's only gone over 25k once and 20k four times in four years. This team is interesting because Vulpix03 has teamed with Dave many times, but the times that he hasn't (SPL 14-15, SCL 3) have seen him completely diverge from that strategy: 36.5k for Empo in SPL 2023, 28.5k for xray in SPL 2024, 28k for GXE in SCL 2023. I would expect the more typical Dave strategy, but there could be surprises.

3b. Tier tendencies
You may have heard how some managers really care about investing in current-gen OU, or how some managers think spending in RBY and DPP is a waste of money. Are there broader trends we can point to?

Top RBY hater: Classiest

d0nut has only broken 10k in RBY twice out of six tries, and last year they won with a 3k RBY. This is not the team I'd expect to bid for Serpi.

Top RBY lover: n/a​
If you want to argue the answer is the Sharks here (who had Troller in those back-to-back finals), I won't disagree, but that feels more like Troller to me, and Troller's gone. D4's broken 10k in RBY for two years in a row as well, but those were on ABR and Prinz; feels more like a "draft great players and see if they can play RBY" strategy. No one seems to consistently target top talent here.

Top GSC hater: BIGs​
Dave has only broken 10k for a GSC starter once in five tries. I'd predict another inexpensive option here.

Top GSC lover: Classiest​
This one's obvious to me. d0nut has never spent less than 10k on a GSC starter in 6 attempts, and the last three years had BIHI, Fear, and Century Express. I'm not sure if anyone prioritizes investing in any oldgen as much as the Classiest invest in GSC.

Top ADV hater: Sharks​
Hater is relative, of course. I'm not saying obii thinks it's dumb to invest in ADV or anything, but it does seem like they think better value can be had elsewhere; obii's never spent 10k or more on an ADV starter.

Top ADV lover: Classiest​
Yup, the team that's drafted McMeghan, BIHI and Triangles in the tier the last three years seems likely to do it again. Honourable mention to the Cryonicles, though; PDC has spent in the tier in the past too.

Top DPP hater: BIGs​
Dave's never spent 10k on a DPP starter. Vulpix hasn't either, for that matter.

Top DPP lover: Sharks​
The finalist Sharks broke 10k on bruno and DeepBlueC at a time when teams really did not want to be spending in the tier; bruno was even the most expensive in the tier at the time. The Tyrants did spend on BKC last year, but I think they'd have done it for BKC in any tier.

Top BW hater: Sharks​
Sorry for another Sharks mention; another slot where obii hasn't broken 10k in three tries.

Top BW lover: BIGs​
Are the Tyrants a better pick? Maybe, but again, I think they just like SoulWind. Dave's never gone below 10k on a BW starter. For the Wolfpack, D4 has gone over 10k in back-to-back years, so that's something to look out for here.

Top ORAS hater: Cryonicles​
PDC has never hit 10k on an ORAS starter. Nor has D4, for that matter.

Top ORAS lover: BIGs​
Dave's broken 10k here 3/5 times, Vulpix 2/2. Worth thinking about.

Top SM hater: Tyrants​
Rey has never broken 10k here for an old-gen SM starter (and therefore neither has blunder). Makes some sense, especially now; blunder is good support and modern gens have deep talent pools.

Top SM lover: n/a​
Not sure, to be honest. The biggest spenders in the tier were the Raiders the last two years, and they're under new management.

Top SwSh hater: n/a​
Sample size is too small here. Not really indicative of much if teams haven't spent here once or twice.

Top SwSh lover: Sharks​
SoulWind in 2023, TDNT last year. Samples are small, though.

Top CG OU hater: Classiest​
Could be Tyrants too, but the Classiest went cheap here last year, and they added Gingy, whose Terrors teams find bargains here. Retains make this messy, though.

Top CG OU lover: Scooters​
Retains make this hard to gauge, but in SCL the Spartans have spent here recently. I'll give a shoutout to end this post.

This is a post for all of the SPL-hopefuls.

Well, today, is quite the special day. It's a day where I've had many memories. Between SPL, Snake, and SCL, for the last 12 years;

I know the highs of making a team and the lows of being left out.
I know the highs of a sheet win, and lows of being on a long drought.
I know the highs of success, and the lows of failure.
I know the highs of feeling included, and the lows of bad behavior.
I know the highs of making playoffs, and the lows of being out by week eight.
I know the highs of someone winning with your team, and the lows of terrible fate.

So this is my message to you all, because I know the feeling all too well of being excluded. Here is the advice I wish I had received all those times I felt like I wasn't good enough:

Being picked in an online Pokémon tournament, doesn't define you and it never will.

If you want to play next year, put your head down, grind circuits, get some results. There has never been more of an opportunity on Smogon to show your skill. Believe in yourself, and you'll be shocked at what you can accomplish.
