Project SV OU - Victim of the Week (Week 74: Assault Vest Hoopa-U)

The winners of the previous week were :ting_lu: by Avira and :skeledirge: by InvisibleWater. They will be added to the Hall of Fame shortly.

This week's victim is a mon that is very irritating to switch into and can be a serious pain if you don't anything that can switch into her. Hatterene has been getting better and better as the generation goes by, and the next featured set is:

:sv/hatterene:
Hatterene @ Covert Cloak
Ability: Magic Bounce
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 HP / 232 Def / 24 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Draining Kiss
- Psychic Noise / Psyshock
- Nuzzle

This Hatterene set is useful on many offensive teams as both hazard control and a special sweeper. Covert Cloak allows her to stonewall other Hatterene and set up on Garganacl with ease. The 24 Spe EVs is for outspeeding Adamant Kingambit after it's paralyzed by Nuzzle, and the given bulk investment makes it so that offensive Cinderace only has a 3.2% chance to 2HKO Hatt with Pyro Ball. This set can be quite disruptive to a number of teams with Nuzzle and by setting up Calm Mind boots and Terastalizing to flip match-ups that wouldn't go in Hatterene's favour. What mons can handle this set without being heavily crippled?

Iron Crown is a check. It hates being paralyzed, but without Mystical Fire, Hatterene deals... weirdly little damage against Iron Crown, to the point where, even at +6, the most it can do is 3HKO. In return, Iron Crown has the tools to win a Calm Mind war if it's reasonably healthy. Tachyon Cutter can OHKO if Hatterene hasn't Terastallized and isn't ahead of you in Calm Mind boosts, and if it does Terastallize, Iron Crown has the stronger Psyshock.

This should honestly be listed as a counter. Hatterene never wins, and Gholdengo can easily switch-in repeatedly and win every time since it has Recover.

This week’s victim is one often overlooked, even though it can break down almost any team structure. The Legends: Arceus–introduced
Arcanine-Hisui is the upgrade Arcanine needed to finally compete with the big dogs of OverUsed.

:sv/arcanine-Hisui:

Arcanine-Hisui @ Choice Band
Ability: Rock Head
Tera Type: Normal / Rock
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Head Smash
- Flare Blitz
- Extreme Speed
- Double Edge / Close Combat

While its Attack stat might not seem that high at first glance, this impression is deceiving. Its immense power comes from the base power of the moves it commonly runs—especially Head Smash with its 150 base power, which can be further enhanced with Tera Rock to dismantle even the bulkiest team structures.
Tera Normal can be used with Extreme Speed to create a mind-blowingly strong attack thanks to its +2 priority bracket, while also boosting Double-Edge to provide a third high-power STAB move. Close Combat can be run on non–Tera Normal sets to offer additional coverage.
Arcanine can afford to run all of these high-power recoil moves because of its ability, which negates all recoil damage.
If it is too difficult to find a check for both Tera Normal and Tera Rock sets, you may choose to address one or the other (just be sure to clarify which), though it is of course more impressive to check or counter both versions.
Let’s see if you have what it takes to beat this powerhouse, or if you’ll be smashed under its immense power.

Garchomp @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 HP / 216 Def / 40 Spe
Tera Type: Ghost
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- Dragon Tail
- Stealth Rock
- Spikes

Garchomp is a check. Its typing gives it a resistance to both of Arcanine's STAB moves, and its invested bulk prevents ExtremeSpeed and Close Combat from 2HKOing. In return, it can threaten an OHKO with Earthquake, at least pre-Tera. In addition, all of Arcanine's moves make contact, which means that it's taking Rocky Helmet + Rough Skin chip with each attack.

If Arcanine does Terastallize, then things change. For Tera Rock, Head Smash still doesn't 2HKO, and Earthquake still OHKOs in return, but with Tera Normal, Double-Edge becomes a 2HKO unless Arcanine gets the lowest possible damage roll twice in a row, and Earthquake is now a 2HKO. Tera Ghost does help in that case, but that takes away Garchomp's Rock and Fire resistances.
