Resource VGC Regulation F Metagame Discussion

y'all need to keep an eye on :comfey:

This feels like it should be an off meta pick but I've lost to three on ladder now. It matchups up way too good into my team.

I'm running a Calm Mind :raging bolt: team for reference.

It pairs super good with :rillaboom: which is just one of the best Pokemon in the format since it's signature move Floral Healing is just better heal pulse when Grassy Terrain is up. It also has the Triage ability, making its healing moves always go first. Plus. it's a fairy type, which is a pain in the ass for my Bolt.

Its stats aren't phenomenal and won't be a staple but it fills a niche that no other Pokemon has in this format, being "prevent everything from dying."
While I think it sounds like a good theory Pokemon, I honestly don't think it is all that great. I have a few jarring reasons why;

First and probably most important, Comfey doesn't let you make any real progress. You may argue the same about other supports like Amoonguss and Indeedee-F, but they have qualities like Spore / Redirection, which Comfey lacks. Additionally, healing just isn't that strong in a VGC format, considering games go by so quickly when compared to something like Smogon Doubles, where healing is far more impactful because of the generally longer games IMO. Comfey doesn't really even do any real damage either, Draining Kiss (without boosts) feels useless.

Not to mention the fact that Flutter Mane is right there as a Fairy-type... Comfey also hard loses to Iron Crown and Gholdengo and can hardly handle threats like Landorus, Rillaboom, Incineroar, etc. Something like Flutter Mane, on the other hand, can hit the first two with Shadow Ball and can offer actual progression to achieving KOs on the others.

I might just be a hater but TLDR; Comfey makes no real progress, healing is not worth dedicating a slot to, and there are better Fairy-type options (and it has like 1 good MU)

I do finally want to clarify that I think it can be ok. Healing up an ally Calm Mind Raging Bolt with Floral Healing and having speed control in Tailwind or Trick Room (does it get Trick Room? I'm kinda lazy and don't want to check LOL) can be really useful in some games. But see above for my issues, as those far outweigh these benefits tbh.

I think comfey is good, it has a real niche that other Pokémon cannot do which I think is important. Comparing it to something like flutter mane or Amoonguss is a little silly imo, sure they are both support but they are not at all similar in the roles they play. I think the Pokémon you are supporting really decides whether comfey (and Rillaboom is you are looking to get the most out of comfey) is worth using or not. They have to be capable of taking over a game by themselves, have a good matchup into a lot of the meta, and be really bulky. I don’t think there are many Pokémon that meet all this criteria, perhaps archaludon, maybe galarian moltres also.

During Reg H I really liked the core of sneasler + gambit + rillaboom. They all balanced eachother out well and gave good offensive pressure. They were also pretty easy to slap on as a foundation for any team.

Are there any cores in Reg F that accomplish a similar feat? Where they are just a really solid backbone you can slap onto a lot of teams? I’m looking to do some team building so I’m curious haha

Honestly I have no idea. Of course there are lots of strong 3 man cores in Regulation F that have good matchups into a lot of things, such as Incineroar, Amoonguss and Urshifu, but without hearing more about what you liked about this regulation H core and what you would like for your core to achieve. Perhaps something like Gouging Fire, Wogerpon and Kingambit is similar?

chat there's so many :Raging_bolt:

I'm not complaining. It's legit one of my favorite Pokemon and I've used it on literally every team since Reg F started back up.

but oh my god it's everywhere

and they're being used in so many different ways

I say this as a firm believer that Raging Bolt is a fish.

Giraffe Takeover

how do we think scizor could do in the current format
i feel like it might be usable but it seems kind of hard to pull off
but like there are other mons like that (e.g. sylveon, which is pretty good with a pair of specs)

probably just any oger thing i think
like oger is a free baseline for a lot of these (e.g. oger/rilla/X, oger/torn/bolt, etc. i don't actually know what a core is defined as but i think i get it kind of) mostly because of all the forms
every form has some kind of use i think
hearthstone and wellspring are the obvious ones, sturdy and rock-type cudgel (for torn, oger-h, even atales) are nice on cornerstone, and being able to run tealmask with any stupid item you could ever want is very fun
