Cryos (3):
- no changes
BIGs (2):
- SV: Setsu (1-2) -> Hiko (0-0)
Tigers (2):
- no changes
Wolfpack (2):
- GSC: choolio (0-2) -> coco (1-0)
- SV: Originality56 (0-3) -> Sacri' (0-0)
Ruiners (0):
- ADV: Prinz (0-3) -> JabbaTheGriffin (0-0)
- BW: sugarhigh (0-3) -> Prinz (0-0)
- SV: sunsets (0-2) -> ACR1 (0-2)
There's a bit more roster turnover this week. The BIGs (Hiko) and Wolfpack (coco) each had a starter-caliber player sitting on the bunch and take the opportunity to bring them in to help a struggling slot. I'm not convinced that Sacri' profiles as a particularly valuable contributor in SV, but they've got an 0-3 slot and this is who they have (more on that later). I'd imagine that the Raiders are swapping JJ more out of availability than for performance. As for the Ruiners, to be honest, I didn't like their draft at all and so while I understand that they need to make moves, I'm not entirely convinced that any of these are "good" options. Jabba was always going to come in for a struggling oldgen slot at some point, although I did think it would be GSC (so that Fakes could cover BW). I don't know what to make of Prinz in BW. Maybe this team will win a week eventually.

While the Sharks' moves do also kinda amount to throwing bullshit out there and seeing what works, it's worth contrasting their behaviour with the teams tied for second, all holding pat. Which makes sense! From the POV of the Classiest, Scooters, and Tyrants, what they've done so far has been working fairly well, and they don't really have the security to risk screwing things up. The Sharks can make these moves because they've got a substantial lead in both points and BD, and it helps that I like the specific moves. As the Sharks got off to their hot start, it increasingly seemed to me that if they trust Marshall.Law, then their best lineup will be one that slots him into DPP and uses Malekith to plug a whole elsewhere in the oldgens. I have no idea where exactly he'll end up (prior to this week I would have guessed it would be GSC), and because I don't think the Sharks knew at the start of the season I think it makes sense to just go with the safer plan and put Malekith in his best tier, but I think these are the kind of experiments you should be making if you have this cushion in the standings.

Question I have is, are there any interesting moves that didn't get made? The one that stands out to me is the Tyrants, who are currently slated to have the three cheapest 0-3 players in their week 4 lineup. Two of those are their ORAS and DPP starters, and they have a top prospect currently sitting on their bench who has some really respectable accomplishments in those tiers this year, in Tenebricite. And look, this isn't me saying that the Tyrants are wrong to keep trusting Poek and Lady Bug. They have the most experienced manager core in the pool and being able to read situations like this is something they have a lot of practice at. Nonetheless, I'll still highlight this as an interesting choice; I think every manager around the league would play this situation in a different way. EDIT: I'm dumb and they made this roster move. Good roster move! I agree.

MVP watch:

I'll stick with a pretty narrow view for now. While I think there are a lot of ways to answer this question right now, I think the obvious mark of "value" at this point would be a 3-0 player whose team picked up an extra point in the standings for each of those wins. That...applies to zero teams (there's no team that's finished each week either 6-6 or 7-5). How about 3-0 players whose teams got an extra point out of two of their wins?
- Tyrants: Vert (SM), Ikaishi (SS)
- Scooters: nicole7735 (RBY), elodin (GSC), Triangles (ADV)
- Raiders: Skyrio (DPP), zS (SV)
You could also make a list based on 3-0 players who've faced the toughest competition. I don't think there's a wrong answer here. There's a case for Ikaishi, Skyrio, zS, or any of the Sharks trio of MichaelderBeste2, Nat, and Santu in this regard, but I think the answer's still elodin. Wins over the PR'd 2, 3, and 5 seeds to pull a team that's seemingly very deficient in oldgen support into a playoff spot.
Trying to figure out which players belong here by supporting their team is a tricky endeavor. Have the Sharks' fairygens been dominant because they've had expert support, or is it because they have a loaded fairygens core in most slots? Maybe the answer's just "whoever's prepping for the Scooters' oldgens". Not sure, some inside baseball knowledge would be cool.

Musings:

Are the Sharks going to collapse like the Ruiners did last year? I guess anything's possible, but it's worth noting that the Ruiners last year got off to that hot start on the backs of 3-0 runs by Punny (who finished 6-3), watashi (5-4), Pak (5-4), and Fogbound Lake (5-4). Especially for watashi and Fog, who were projected in the bottom half of the pool, it's a lot to ask for a finish in the 6-3 realm or higher. Meanwhile, Punny started the season against Charmflash, robjr, and Luigi, before facing the tough opponents as the season went on. Banking the easier wins, splitting the harder games, finishing at 6-3? That doesn't seem so unreasonable.
Point is, the Ruiners got their lead in part off of some unsustainable starts. The difference with the Sharks is that if Santu, Michael, or Nat finished the season at 5-4, those would be major disappointments even without the context of the 3-0 starts. Yeah, DeeJ and Plague are going to cool off a bit, but in general the reason to believe in the Sharks, I think, is that the reasons they've been successful so far are the parts of the team that basically everyone expected to be excellent going into the year.

Other assorted notes:
- I'm not really sure whether the Tigers keep entrocefalo in SS going forward, especially if he loses again. Do you just leave your player who started 2-0 for you on the bench? Do you prioritize getting him back in SV even if means kicking someone who's playing well out of the lineup?
- Two matchups this week feature a pair of 3-0 players: Monai-Mako and Garay oak-Triangles. Highlights for sure.
- The Wolfpack are really interesting to me in terms of roster construction. I'm not even that worried about the fact that Void is 0-3 (although one was an act loss) without an obvious backup in sight, because if their DPP slot flops then realistically this team isn't a contender anyway. My bigger question is that they only had three obvious SV starters (and one of them is now benched), while having two obvious SS starters, an obvious SM starter, and then on top of that their superstar is probably best placed in either SM or SS. They have bbeeaa in SV because they built a roster that desperately needs another SV option and this is the option that fits the most talent SOMEWHERE into the roster. I'm not going to fault anyone for losing to Nat in SV right now, and I'm sure bbeeaa will be fine, but it just feels like the Wolfpack don't have great levers to pull if they have to make a change. You don't want bbeeaa in SV, but you also don't really want Gtcha, Gondra, or Sacri' there either.

Team Raiders (0) vs (0) Dragonspiral Tyrants
SV OU: zS vs Fusien - good mu, both players are very sharp on a turn-by-turn basis
SV OU: Eternal Spirit vs Baddy
SV OU: Ash KetchumGamer vs Axzel
SV OU: tier vs myjava - JJ really wasn't playing about how he wasn't playing

Alpha Ruiners (0) vs (0) Circus Maximus Tigers
SV OU: fakenagol vs Kate - across last SCL and now, this is probably fakenagol's first 3k opp lol
SV OU: ACR1 vs Patatexv
SV OU: sire clod vs Ewin
SV OU: lax vs Cow - I just know there's gonna be some shit like fezandipiti brought by one of them

Congregation of the Classiest (0) vs (0) Indie Scooters
SV OU: Xrn vs Pais - Xrn has gotten a pretty tough draw so far and I don't really see an 0-4 start happening
SV OU: Shengineer vs Storm Zone
SV OU: Lazuli vs DAHLI - always bet on DAHLI normalizing to a +2 record by end of season
SV OU: LpZ vs heileone

Wi-Fi Wolfpack (0) vs (0) Ever Grande BIGS
SV OU: Let's Rumble Shall We vs pdt - this game is lowkey probably going to be sheist
SV OU: Fogbound Lake vs Hiko
SV OU: Sacri' vs JustFranco
SV OU: bbeeaa vs Stareal - that dondozo was giving bea absolutely nothing last week

Cryonicles (0) vs (0) Stark Sharks
SV OU: clean vs Attribute
SV OU: kDCA vs Plague - Plague is 3-0 but this is their first opponent without numbers in their name, will it matter?
SV OU: watashi vs Nat - the new alt rule is a direct Nat nerf unfortunately
SV OU: bhkg vs hellom

You don't want bbeeaa in SV, but you also don't really want Gtcha, Gondra, or Sacri' there either.
Ruiners are fucking making poffs
