Forum Suggestions and Improvements

Disclaimers: this is
  • not necessarily covered by the OP, though I don't know where else it could go;
  • possible to read as an insult, but please don't; and
  • unlikely to be high priority.
Smogon's home page seems out of date. Specifically, the section entitled "Learn" links only to X/Y, and I wonder if it belongs before the section "Train & Battle;" I wonder the same about the links across the top. Playing the game usually comes before wanting to learn about it, and these days I'd reckon that PS! the most forward-facing part of Smogon (potential visitor stats to Battle Stadium analyses notwithstanding).

Based on the massive amount of spam being posted in Orange Islands right now, fresh accounts should probably be restricted from being able to make threads. Require them to have existed for some arbitrary minimum lifetime (a week?) before the option is available.

I don't know if this is possible or not but it would be nice if the sprites like :landorus: where searchable with ctrl-f, or similar, by the pokemon's name.

I just want to know how to pull them up without copy/pasting the forum embed links from pokemondb.:row:

It works with our built-in forum search function

Hey, I wasn't sure what the best place to ask this is:

Is there a way to determine why push notifications are currently not supported? Whether it's a browser issue, an OS issue, or something else.

I'm not sure, this is what the options say:
If enabled, a user will be able to subscribe to receive their alerts via devices which are compatible with the Push API. Users will only be able to enable push notifications if they are using a compatible device. This is supported by most modern browsers.
I'm on Chrome 143 OS X and it's supported there at least.

Brave 1.86.139 (Chromium 144.0.7559.59)
Linux Mint 22.3 x86_64 (Cinnamon 6.6.5)

It opens notifications from Showdown, WhatsApp, Spotify, Discord, so I don't see why this would be happening.

Would it be possible for Pokemon with existing Gen 5 sprites on Pokemon Showdown to be able to be displayed with :bw/pokemon:? Currently, it only works for Pokemon with official Gen 5 animated sprites, and since Pokemon Showdown already has custom Gen 5 style sprites for most Pokemon, it would be great if they were easily accessible on the forum.

So for example, something like :bw/alcremie: would output

In case someone else runs into this issue with push notifications on Brave, I fixed it by enabling "Use Google services for push messaging"

This might be better suited to a userscript, but I'll suggest it just in case it's easy to implement or something. If it's not feasible or desirable as a forum feature I might just make a script for it anyway when I have time lol.

Would it be possible to have some kind of toggle to switch between minisprites being on/off/replaced with the Pokémon name? For instance, :mareanie: could be toggled to display as either nothing or as the word "Mareanie." My motivation for this is better explained here by fortunate sun. Ideally it would be easily toggled from the top-of-page menu, so you don't have to go change a profile setting every time you want to swap which option you want. It's the kind of thing that I might reasonably want in either of those three modes depending on the individual thread I'm looking at.

I know this site probably needs ads to keep the lights on, but can we please not allow ads that cover the screen borders on mobile? They block the shortcut bar when looking at the Dex and make it unusable.

I don't know if this is already possible. If so, please let me know.
A lot of the time, I want to quote parts of posts from threads that can no longer be replied to, so we have to create the quote header manually by copying the post number, username and member ID.

[QUOTE="<user_name>, post: <post_id>, member: <member_id>"]

In open threads, we can just click Reply and then copy and paste the quote wherever we want. I don't know if this would be a lot of work, but I'll leave the suggestion!

Edit: this would be even more valuable when trying to quote the original/first post of a thread, because I believe we can't get the post ID without looking at the page source, only the thread ID.

I want to propose a feature where we add total OP views to the users page (like it would be Messages + Reaction Score + OP Views + Points)

OP Views as in posts made by a user and the resulting views it gets.

Could be kinda useful to measure a user's site impact.

We could also like truncate it, so 36459 views would just be 36.4k views

This is a very well-organized and clear initiative. I really appreciate how the guidelines encourage specific, solution-focused suggestions while keeping things structured. It’s great to see a dedicated space for improving the forum experience thoughtfully and professionally.

This is more of a quality of life change that’s specific to me in this case but occurs often enough to ask for.

Requesting a pink font color to be added to the selection of font colors. I host a Monotype tournament every year where a type that gets used by one team cannot be used again for the rest of the week. When people use a type, I list the type they used in the thread and change the font color of the type used. At the top of winner’s bracket shows an example. When people use Fairy, I have to Google the hex code for pink every time, or keep open a tab to copy the pink hex code if I’m updating the thread for multiple games where Fairy has been played by different teams.
