What I'm Known For: Operating a youtube channel / using unconventional teams
Fun Fact: Greedy_eb is a fraud
Good evening LC Enjoyer, thanks for agreeing to be the next interviewee on the Little Cup Convos series! Besides setting this up, I don’t think we’ve ever had a proper chat, so it’s nice to meet you as well! I hope everyone reading is as excited to get to know as I am. How are you doing? Hope all is well.
Doing great, thanks! I'm honored to be chosen for this, hope all is well for you too.
Glad to hear that, and I’m doing good too, thanks. Should I be calling you LC Enjoyer by the way? That’s your discord name, but your smogon name is… well… the opposite I guess. And I know you have a youtube called Average LC Enjoyer (more on this later) too. Perhaps your level of LC enjoyment varies by the day.
Right, I've heard that my name causes a lot of confusion. It all started with my original pokemon showdown username, average lc enjoyer. It was based off the "average fan vs average enjoyer" meme (stupid inspiration I know, but I was like 12 when I chose that name). I created a youtube account by the same name, but early on I shortened it to just "Lc Enjoyer" because it flows off the tongue better. Lastly, my smogon username is "not enjoying lc" because, well I thought it was funny? I'm not actually sure why I stuck with that, I should probably change it but I always forget to.
Anyways, most people just call me lc enjoyer.
Ah I see, that makes sense! Those memes are definitely funny, but I didn't realize they were an inspiration for your name. Regardless of if you change it or not, I'm sure people are still able to connect you between your other accounts so I wouldn't worry about that.
Well with the semantics of your username settled, I’d like to open it up to you, if you’d like to share anything about yourself. Perhaps where you’re from, what you do, some of your hobbies outside of mons, etc.
I'm from Belgium, hobbies are playing football and investing in the stock market.
Awesome! Sounds like you've got an active life outside of the game, and best of luck to Belgium in the upcoming world cup. But back to Little Cup, would you be able to tell us how you go into LC?
I'm not sure exactly how I got into little cup. I started playing in SwSh, shortly before the vullaby ban, but I exclusively played on ladder. After generation 9 came out, I decided to take mons more seriously and started joining tournaments. And that's where I am right now!
That’s awesome to hear. I know you haven’t been playing tournaments for too long, but you’ve already won both Majors and Fall Seasonal. How were those experiences for you, and do you have any advice for new LC players who might be looking to have similar success in individual tournaments as well?
Winning Majors and Fall Seasonal back-to-back was some of the most fun I've had while playing pokemon, the finals of both tournaments were certainly a unique experience. About LC Majors: Envy wanted to play instantly after he won in the semi-finals. Now, I had an important math test the very next day which I had not yet studied for, however despite this glaring issue I agreed to play because it sounded hype. Long story short, I got kinda lucky and won LC Majors but failed my math test (worth it). And the finals of Fall Seasonal.... We don't talk about that.
To your second point: Little cup, despite its looks, can actually be a very intimidating tier for a new player because it's played with level 5 pokemon. If you're trying to get into little cup, I recommend you start by laddering with sample teams or teams you find in the team bazaar. Once you've got a grip on things and you understand the mechanics, try making some teams yourself! There's plenty of people in the discord willing to help you with team building if you have any questions.
Haha those are definitely some memorable experiences, but to anyone still in school, study first, mons second. Even if your favorite youtuber says otherwise. But also congrats on those wins! Are you planning on making a case for an SCL spot later this year?
I tried out for SCL last year as a joke and failed to qualify. However, with some actual tournament results behind my belt I believe that I've got a decent shot at being drafted this year. So basically, yes I'll try to make an SCL appearance but as always nothing is certain.
P.S. You'll never get drafted for SCL with a mindset like that.
I’m almost positive you’ll make it this year — back to back individual wins is no small feat, and you had a strong showing in circuit playoffs as well. Adding a good team tour result to your resume wouldn’t hurt either. Are you looking forward to LCCL? I assume you’ll mainly be playing SV right? How do you feel about the meta at the moment?
Yeah I'll be trying for gen 9, which won't be easy considering how little SV slots there are in total! But that also means that only the best of the best will be chosen, so the competition will be very stiff which gets me excited!
About the current meta, I think something needs to be done about terastalization. I already make an in-depth post about my thoughts on the topic in this post
https://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/metagame-discussion.3710868/post-10822149
But to summarize my thoughts; ban tera blast. It adds nothing meaningful to the meta and getting rid of it would eliminate a lot of guesswork while also allowing us to unban some pokemon. However I still enjoy scarlet and violet little cup, despite all its flaws.
Yeah absolutely, this 6 team, 2 SV slot format will make things a lot more competitive, so certainly looking forward to seeing how you and everyone else perform! As for the meta, you've got some valid points for sure. Council has so far taken the route of banning the tera abusers, instead of banning the tool that makes them broken, so I guess we'll have to wait and see if they change their mind. But I'm glad you enjoy the current meta regardless! Speaking of which, would you be willing to share and explain an SV team you enjoy with all of the readers who have made it this far?
This is a team I'm pretty proud of: https://pokepast.es/1c04750d44d7adad
Main idea: Use slowfoo and eject button mareanie to get gothita in and trap growlithe counters, such as mienfoo and opposing mareanie. This either gets a KO or baits the opponenent in terastrializing, both of which get you closer to a growlithe end-game sweep. Speaking of, I chose a slow bulky growlithe because I wanted longevity. Toxic spikes mareanie is super underrated, can come in clutch once you've trapped the opponents poison typed. You do have to watch out for alolan diglet, but with 15 defence mienfoo, air balloon tink and tera grass mareanie you should be able to play around it.
Majors finals vs Envy (Really regretted not having mud shot this game)

Was able to get opponent to waste their tera early, won with growlithe late game:

I've been a big fan of that exact goth set since the start of SV, but never thought to pair it with toxic spikes. That's actually really smart. Perhaps I'll be copying that concept for future teams of mine... And wow that game against Envy was absolutely ridiculous — crazy predictions, some hax and a wild ending. I appreciate you sharing this team with us and I know I'm excited to see some more cool teams you'll build and use for LCCL.
Anyways, enough of the tournament talk, I think we're all interested in your youtube channel. That's how I first heard about you, so I'm wondering if there was any inspiration or reason for you to start making videos? And how has that experience been for you?
Right, I think most people know me because of my youtube channel.
My biggest inspiration was Pokevin, he posts youtube videos centered around random battle. He shows his replays and adds some light commentary coupled with background music. Despite not being interested in random battles as a tier, I always found myself watching his videos. They were short, entertaining and engaging so I decided to replicate his style but apply it to little cup instead. I created my channel at the same time generation 9 released, so some early videos kind of popped off because of all the hype. The best example of this is a random tinkatink video that somehow got 68K views, I don't know why that one specifically went so viral but to this day it's still my most viewed video!
I went on creating videos around concepts that I thought viewers would find entertaining, but as the generation went on people naturally started to lose interest, views started to decline and I was running out of interesting video idea's, which that brings us to today. I haven't posted in months, but I'll definitely start making videos again when generation 10 gets released. All around it's been a great journey and am so glad I decided to dabble in content creation.
Content creation such a fun and productive creative outlet, but I also understand how much effort it takes to film and edit videos consistently, so I'm glad that it's been an overall great experience for you. In fact, I'm sure you've brought a lot of attention and new players to our community, so really we should be thanking you for that as well. In terms of new/future content, have you ever thought about collaborating with other pokemon showdown based youtubers?
Haha no problem, although I'm not sure how many new players I actually brought in. I haven't considered doing a colab with other youtubers because it doesn't really fit my content style. Maybe on a second channel tho.
Fair enough, do you have plans for a second channel though? And then lastly before we wrap up, do you have any advice or words of encouragement for anyone reading who might be wanting to, or are in the process of starting content creation? With your experience, I'm sure there's a lot to learn.
Something I regret not doing more in my early youtube career was experimenting. I felt like viewers would stop watching if I drifted away from my usual content style. That assumption obviously ended up being being wrong, in fact 5 of my 10 most popular videos aren't even on little cup despite 95% of my channel being dedicated to the tier! Now that I say it out loud, maybe I should stop making lc videos and switch to a new genre. Is Pokemon Unite still doing well?
But seriously, allow yourself to experiment and try new things. Staying sedimentary can kill a channel, you have to try and switch things up every once in a while. However you also have to face the reality that your viewers might not like the new style of content, which can be very discouraging. But don't let it stop you; Failure is a natural part of success after all.
I have no plans on creating a second youtube channel, but if I did it would just be me screwing around with my friends, just for fun.
Nooo don’t leave LC! Haha but you’re totally right — sometimes you need to switch things up to reach a larger audience. As in life, change can be scary but also an opportunity for growth.
Well LC Enjoyer, it was an absolute pleasure chatting with you this evening, and I’m sure everyone reading felt the same. Wishing you the best in your SCL and youtube endeavors! If there are any final shoutouts or words you'd like to leave with, please feel free to do so now.
Don't worry, as long as I'm unemployed I'll continue to play little cup. That is to say, a while.
