not to be pretentious but yall should really read this… Tell me how to make good threads without any effort, brain usage, or changing my way of life (read post #6)

I ended up merging and locking these two very similar threads instead of deleting them. Objectively, two threads that are like “I need better thread ideas so I’m going to crowdsource this in a tongue-in-cheek way” are kind of a waste of space and just lead to forum clutter. But I think we can use this as a learning opportunity.

Not everything needs to be a thread. And not everything needs to be a post.

I’ll admit, I post a lot of content in Smogoff. I don’t have raw data but I would suspect that it’s either me or BIG ASHLEY who have the most Smogoff posts lifetime. Idk if Bashley has had the same exact experience as me, but for how often I do post, I also don’t post a lot if that makes sense. There have been plenty of times where I’ve been halfway through a post, and then I step back and am like, hmm, maybe I should just let that one go. Either because I realize it’s inappropriate, not funny, adds nothing of value, etc. This happens more often with thread ideas than individual posts, but I would encourage at least a little thought behind posts so that it doesn’t lead to all sorts of forum clutter.

Also, not everything needs to be a banger.

While the above sentiment about putting thought into posts does hold true, at the same time, if we become so caught up in “omg this has to be funny/good quality” then at that point we’re becoming the funny police and pigeonholing people into posting in a certain way. That’s not what we want either. Smogoff should be a place where you can be you and let your individual sense of humor (or opinions/effortposts/etc) shine, so while I do appreciate the thought of like “how do I make a better thread,” sometimes you need to Just Post It after putting a little thought into whether it adds anything or not.

As a poster that is younger and/or newer to the forums, it’s probably a bit weird to see all these established presences who seem to “get it” while you’re wondering what or how often to post. Especially when I mentioned in the first paragraph about “forum clutter” and putting thought/effort into your posts. At the end of the day, I’d say I’m pretty liberal with the Just Post It attitude and that I would rather the mod team do some light course correction rather than having people be afraid to post because they don’t fit in with the “in crowd” or whatever. If you’re ever unsure though, don’t be afraid to message me or another mod about an idea you have or whether something would be a good fit here. People do message me semi-frequently about it, even posters who have been around the block, so I certainly don’t mind.

Finally, I do want to give some shoutouts to people that I do think make the forum actively better that (I hope) are people you can kind of look to for some inspiration. Like, don’t copycat these people, be yourself, but we have plenty of good eggs here that I appreciate. Not that this is not an exhaustive list by any means so if you’re not on here don’t get mad at me or whatever lol

Mod team:
phoopes Sijih Mathy Ivy olivia

Social forum CCs:

Social forum ladybugs:
Blizihguh Bog Monster

Mostly inactive mods/CC people that we miss:

Again, likely others that I missed (don’t be offended). The point is though that there are plenty of people here that you can “look up to” so to speak.

TL;DR
1. Just be yourself
2. Just Post It (within reason, use your head a little bit)
3. Ask the mods if you’re unsure of something
4. Appreciate the great community we’ve built
