I hadn’t realized just how bad the roamers in FRLG actually are, lmao. I knew about the Roar glitch but I didn’t think the lower IVs thing was actually true and I still don’t like how you can’t find the route they’re initially spawned on once you unlock them. These might be the worst roamers in the entire series, even worse than X & Y’s roamers.

On that note, here’s a question for you guys. Suppose someone were to, say, mod Roar into Ruby & Sapphire for Latias and Latios. Would they become glitched too? Wonder if anyone’s ever tried this.
Yes, both to the Roar Glitch and to that people have tried. RS Latios and Latias are also subject to the IV glitch (Emerald is not).

Why did you not think the low IV thing was real lmao. It was a decently well-known glitch? It takes like five seconds to verify on Bulbapedia's Gen 3 glitches page.

I just want to know what led you to this conclusion when negative evidence existed.

Bulba does get the occasional instance of people adamantly defending glitches that don't exist to be fair, like the supposed gen 3 glitch that causes Pokemon with everstones who trade evolve to evolve and then delete the Everstone... it took multiple edits of the page AND video proof to finally get people to stop readding this glitch to that page.

Just gotta say, I'm really annoyed by the button layout for this rerelease, I have a habit of button mashing the face buttons and I've lost progress at least twice so far because it soft resets the game...

I completed my first Switch Leaf Green run, only using Pokemon that have a species name that starts with "P".

P is for Pokemon, so to celebrate 30 years of Pokemon, I wanted to try this unique run, and it was hard.

My restrictions:
  • I could only use "P" Pokemon, but if a pre-evolution didn't start with P, I could use it just fine, since it evolved into a "P" Pokemon. The end goal was to beat the league with just P mons. I could use non-P mons for the sake of HM usage, or my starter Bulbasaur before getting my P starter.
  • No glitches or exploits, such as the nugget bridge exploit, mail glitch, etc.
  • Battled in Set mode.
  • No items in battle, but held items were allowed.
  • No over-leveling unless absolutely necessary.
  • At the Elite 4, I couldn't save in between E4 members. If I lost, I had to start over.
I started the game with Bulbasaur so the rival could get the Charizard team, which ended up being a mountain to overcome, but I'm getting ahead of myself. My real starter was:

It's been forever since I've seriously used a Pidgeot, but Skye (named after a childhood Rottweiler of the same name, may she RIP) turned out to be much better than I expected. Who knew Normal-types were still pretty good in Kanto? She was the first to evolve, and as a Pidgeotto, she was the team's carry for a while, with STAB Secret Power being a great route-cleaner, followed by Return later. Aerial Ace ended up being crucial during the league against Agatha's Double Team Gengar. Even Steel Wing 2-shotted Bruno's Onix, and was there as an emergency vs the rival's Rhydon. Hyper Beam was there for a nuke button. Even Keen Eye came in clutch sometimes vs Sand Attack.

Fern was a glass cannon. She fainted a lot to many normal-types that she should have checked, but eventually, she grew to be one of the team's strongest Pokemon. Without her, I'd have been stuck at Brock for a while. Bulk Up let me sweep through Lorelei, killing Slowbro with EQ at +4 Attack, or a 2HKO at +3 with a Rock Slide flinch. She surprisingly did well vs the later part of the Agatha fight, utilizing Vital Spirit to block Hypnosis, and +1 Rock Slide KO'd Haunter and 2HKO'd the last Gengar. She could have swept Bruno, too, but I wanted to use another party member for him, which I'll talk about later. She knocked out the rival's Rhydon.

The big P herself. Something that was nice about this P run was that I had half my team before I even got to Brock. I enjoy using Pikachu in Pokemon runs, and this was no different. Alex naturally learning Thunderbolt was pretty huge midway into the game. She was the Gyarados-slayer for the league, and against the rival's Pidgeot, Rain Dance + Thunder bypassed Sand Attack accuracy drops. Thunder Wave was also nice to have in case Alex was about to go down.

Oh, Poindexter. You were extremely hard to use, but you had Spore, so everything turned out fine. He had some growing pains as a Paras, but Bullet Seed let it deal with the region's Rock, Water, and Ground-types for a while. I even used Leech Life with some success against some Psychic types, until I dropped it for better options. He then had Giga Drain for a bit, but SunnyBeam was his true calling, using Spore to find Sunny Day setup opportunities. Slash gave Poindexter mixed coverage against special walls, and the high crit rate was appreciated. This was the team member I wanted to use for Bruno, and he bullied him. I loved this nerd :)

:boi:Poliwhirl was kinda sorta another Pokemon mascot during the first couple years of the franchise. I'm serious. Look at older promo material and you'd be surprised how often Poliwhirl was front and center. Anyways, why didn't I use Poliwrath? Besides the aforementioned pseudo-mascot status, I preferred Poliwhirl's greater Speed, and I didn't want to stack another Psychic and Flying weakness to the team. Even with Poliwhirl's subpar offensive stats, Umi put in work, and got the last kill of the run vs the rival's Charizard :boi:

quack.exe was the final team member, and despite Leaf Green's cheaper Porygon pricing, it took a lot of grinding to get, especially considering I prioritized Ice Beam for Poliwhirl first. quack.exe was primarily recruited to be my Agatha answer, with its Normal-typing and access to Psychic and Ice Beam. However, its low Speed ended up biting it vs the first Gengar. Double Team, Confuse Ray, and Toxic were annoying for it. After a while, I started the battle with a Lum Berry to dodge the first status move, and if it used Double Team too much, I fell back to Skye's (Pidgeot's) Aerial Ace. For a while, it was using BoltBeam + Psychic, but I swapped out Thunderbolt for Thunder Wave to achieve better consistency vs Agatha and Lance, and it ended up paying off. Trace also came in clutch vs Lance thanks to Dragonair's Shed Skin removing paralysis.

The Champion fight:

Overall, this was a really fun run. Happy 30th Anniversary, Pokemon! I might make an update post with the second round of the Elite 4.

my phone is too old to use the nintendo switch app so all I have is this blurry picture, but I did beat firered on switch 2

entered the e4 at level 48, didn't do any grinding or catching pokemon unless I had to. beat every trainer. total playtime was 13:12.

if version exclusives didnt exist I wouldve used Magmar instead of Arcanine but alas

It's funny how it's a shared experience of freaking out and staring at the screen for minutes on end whenever the rival sends out Alakazam. I didn't lose a single party member to any of his other pokemon but Alakazam wiped out 4 of them and I only got saved by it randomly deciding to Future Sight.
It’s so funny how Abra and Kadabra are easy to bully in the early game, only for Alakazam to appear and give me a heart attack whenever I see it. What no psychic resists does to a man…

Magneton? Or do you mean in the P Only run?
Magneton is most likely the worst possible way to get a psychic resist considering how low its hp and sdef are and its low attack stat with no steel stab

also honestly I just realized that if I had got my arcanine to level 49 I couldve probably one shot it with extremspeed

woops

That's why you have to have at least one psychic type of your own. You need to have something to pivot into them. Or don't and just hope you have something reasonably bulky that isn't also poison type to switch in

I'm referring to the challenge run I was doing. I could only use Pokemon that have their species name start with P, and there weren't any Psychic-types or Magneton available :worrywhirl:

Home support is coming later, and I managed to name my rival AS5BUTT. You just have to be creative with dodging the censorship now.View attachment 813642
So wait they removed a bug fixing patch but added censorship. I'm confused, what exactly am I paying for? I have this game on my GBA and even phone.

Like I genuinely don't understand. This game is free on whatever device you are reading this comment on, and it's probably better?

the bug fixing patch is only specifically if you connected frlg to ruby or sapphire, which isn't really relevant to the switch port and the berry bug it fixes in ruby and sapphire will likely be patched whenever they port it. that form of patching was the only real way they could fix a glitch back then other than releasing a brand new version.

they also fixed the raikou and entei roar glitch in this frlg switch port. the ivs are still weird apparently but that's less important.

not really represented much online but a lot of people are not comfortable with emulation or piracy of any kind. also a lot of people don't want to play pokemon on a device that isn't attached to their tv or a handheld. if you wanted to play firered or leafgreen "legally" or "ethically" you have to spend upwards of 300 dollars to do it.

there will be home capability in the future so that's another appealing thing to certain types of players.

I think there’s probably also a smaller segment of the audience that’s like me in the sense that, while I don’t necessarily have any ethical qualms about emulating a 20-year-old, out-of-print game with insane secondary market prices, emulating a pirated ROM just doesn’t feel the same as being able to play an official copy on official hardware. Much like how I prefer to purchase music I like instead of just listening to it for free on YouTube or even just getting a better “deal” by subscribing to a streaming service.

Yeah, it costs me extra overall, so it is very much a frivolous, first-world luxury to be able to nitpick about this, and I certainly don’t begrudge anyone for not doing that, but personally, I really do feel a significant psychological difference in being able to pay the creator of the thing that I want directly. (And yes, I’m sure there’s the influence of capitalist propaganda underpinning that feeling, but eh, what can I say? I’m all for burning capitalism to the ground, but I guess that’s just not a part of the current arrangement that I have an issue with.)
