Pet Mod Paleomons - Slate 15 Submissions

after all these years... finally, the vetos are out.

:sv/espathra: :sv/Zapdos-galar:
"y'know, Espathra used to be honorable mons back in my day. what happened to fair balance?"
Name: Espathra-Terrestrial (Terrespathra.)
Original Pokémon: Espathra
Typing: Ground / Flying
Abilities: Opportunist / Quick Feet (Sand Force)
Stats: 85/105/61/50/70/110

New Moves: Stomp, Stomping Tantrum, Earthquake, Rock Slide, Stone Edge, Stealth Rock, Dual Wingbeat, Triple Kick, Jump Kick, High Jump Kick, Bulk Up, Blaze Kick, Trop Kick, Lunge.
Removed Moves: Expanding Force, Light Screen, Lumina Crash, Psychic, Stored Power, Trick, Dazzling Gleam, Shadow Ball, (don't ask why it keeps Psyshock.)

Role: Fast Pivot / Physical Breaker with a funny way of dealing with setup-mons
Flavor: so imagine Espathra, but with LEGS. like big legs. workout day. More Cassowary and Emu-like.
Ground/Flying STABs are pretty much impossible to wall in this meta, and LO Bulk Up sets are OHKOing all but the fattest of fatmons at +1 (and the ones that can live a hit, like Bastiodon and Carriguana, can't do enough back to stop you from trading positively). This paired with the fact that Ice type attacks are very rare in the meta (and usually on mons this outspeeds) makes it overtuned for the current meta. You'll need to lower Attack a good bit or remove Bulk Up if you want this to be balanced.

Name: Espathra-Ritual
Original Pokémon: Espathra
Typing: Psychic/Water
Ability: Drizzle/Opportunist/Frisk
Stats: 105/60/60/96/60/100
New Moves: Healing Wish, Laguna Crash (Water type Lumina Crash)
Removed Moves: Calm Mind
Role: Rain setter. This meta is like, super balance/bo focused especially since our only web mon isn't that great rn. By adding a rain setter, especially one with as much fast utility, this can open the door for rain offense, especially due to already present abusers like Servachne. Can also be offensive on it's own with dual crashes, but your only decent speed and paper thin bulk makes that more difficult.
Flavor: With espathra's ancient egyptian origin, them being a literal rain dancer only makes sense, as they have some of the first recorded instances of ritual rain dancing.
While I like the idea of a Rain setter, this is definitely overtuned. Laguna Crash is getting absolutely ridiculous damage numbers with Rain up, with Specs sets guaranteed 2HKOing max SpDef Carracosta and max HP Kabutops. The only fix really is to scrap the move entirely, and just replace it with a different Water attack (preferably not Hydro Pump).

Name: Drednaw-Abyss
Original Pokémon: Drednaw
Typing:

Abilities: Shell Armor / Heatproof | Regenerator
Stats: 90/60/80/90/140/25

New Moves:
Special.png
: Bug Buzz, Flash Cannon, Mud Slap, Power Gem, Scald, Sludge Bomb
Status.png
: Aqua Ring, Refresh, Wish
Removed Moves:
Physical.png
: Crunch, Earthquake, Head Smash, High Horsepower, Jaw Lock, Rock Blast, Rock Slide, Stone Edge, Throat Chop
Status.png
: Shell Smash

Role: Spdef steel with recovery as widely requested. It's able to effectively switch into mons like Kabutops and Bastiodon while getting destroyed by strong physical threats like Yizolt and Eleffigy especially with it getting outsped by the entire tier, meaning you have to position it well to get value from it.
Flavor: What started with a crackpot theory from the newest intern at Wedgehurst's Research Lab was found to actually be a surprising truth. Drednaw and Gastrodon both descend from the same species! This parent species is one of the earliest to be seen in the fossil record, and evidence suggests that it lived within volcanic vents deep in the ocean, surviving off of scraps of food that fell into their home as well as the mineral-rich brine that flowed through their habitat. From these minerals, they would build up a shell of iron, magnesium, and other trace elements to protect themselves from the few predators that could stand the pressure and temperature.
Appearance (If the mons ever get sprited): Like a drednaw but with the legs being more stubby like gastrodon's pseudopods, the shell being a dark metal color, the mouth being less pointy, and the horn being a third eye on a stalk
Way too much stats on this thing for it to also get Regen and recovery.

Name: Rhyperior-Ancient
Original Pokémon: Rhyperior
Typing: Steel/Fighting
Abilities: Rattled / Light Metal
Stats: 115/45/75/130/105/65 (535)
New Moves: Aura Sphere, Vacuum Wave, Calm Mind, Taunt
Removed Moves: Ice Beam, Blizzard, Icy Wind, Ice Punch, Fire Punch, Thunder Punch, Rock Polish, Hammer Arm, Focus Punch, Brick Break
Role: The tank. Abuses Rhyperior's ridiculous existing special movepool to become a powerful bruiser that can trade with the best of 'em, at the cost of having no reliable recovery. It has a way to boost its Speed through Rattled which notably makes it a powerful counter to Knock Off from Carracosta as well as being good U-turn deterrent.
Flavor: Based on the elasmotherium, a rhinoceros ancestor that is popularly depicted with a MASSIVE horn. In Rhyperior's case, this massive horn also served as its way of shooting attacks at enemies, rather than using its arms. This allowed it to return to being on all fours like Rhyhorn, focusing on a shoot-and-run style of fighting. It preferred to use this distance strategy, as while its skin was armored, the soft metal was not quite as durable into strong bites or slashes as modern-day Rhyperior's rocky shell. Elasmotherium's horse-like legs serves as the reasoning for this form being a little more speed-focused as well.
This mon trades way too well into the meta. Calm Mind sets are basically impossible for existing SpDef mons to slow down, Carracosta can't touch you at all, even mons like Combysa can't reliably revenge you at +1, and if you manage to get a Rattled boost you can easily sweep entire teams from there. This mon needs its stats dropped by quite a lot in order to be balanced, particularly its SpAtk and HP.

Name: Rhyperior-Ancient
Original Pokémon: Rhyperior
Typing: Rock/Steel
Abilities: Sand Stream / Solid Rock | Sheer Force
Stats: 110/110/65/90/120/40 (535)

New Moves: Shore Up, Flash Cannon
Removed Moves:

Role: SpDef Steel type with recovery, but subpar typing and PhysDef. Can potentially act as a mixed wallbreaker as well with Sheer Force.
Flavor: Ancient Rhyperior wandered the deserts. I'm not good at writing this stuff, ngl.
Shore Up is overkill on this mon. It already hardwalls nearly every special attacker in the tier without 67% recovery.

Due to the long gap between now and when submissions were supposed to close, you will have 48 hours to make necessary changes, and then voting will open. I hope to see you all then!

Alright, all submissions have been fixed (aside from ErrorMon's since they haven't been online in months - message me if you happen to become available within the rest of the veto period and would like to fix your sub), so it is now time for voting to begin! ErrorMon's Espathra-Ritual remains vetoed, while all other submissions may be voted for. The voting rules are as follows:
  • Each Pokémon will be voted for separately.
  • There is no limit on the amount of submissions you can vote for. First Place will count for 3 points, Second Place for 2, and all others will count for 1 point. If you only vote for two submissions in a category, First Place will count for 2 points and Second Place will count for 1 point. If you only vote for one submission in a category, that vote will only count for 1 point.
  • Self-Votes may not be First Place and have a limit of 6 points total.
Drednaw: First Place, Second Place, Third Place
Espathra: First Place, Second Place
Rhyperior: First Place, Second Place, Third Place, Fourth Place, Fifth Place

Voting will last for 48 hours.

New slate coming soon....

I feel inspired to metapost today so I will be reviewing the new mons from this slate, then going over the winners and losers of the past 2 slates + the balance patch.

New Mons:

:drednaw: - The first of two SpDef Steels this slate, and imo the biggest meta-warper we've added since PMPL. Bastiodon, Kabutops, Icaruff, and Nymphamane are all completely shut down by this mon, while previously horrible options like Bellibolt and Meganium actually do really well into it. Hopefully this will end up being a healthy addition, but I think it or its teammates will likely need some toning down in the future.

:espathra: - The second SpDef Steel, and while this one is less overtly meta-defining, it's still going to be very solid. Espathra's main balancing factor is its horribly low attacking stats, but it makes up for those with a ridiculously good defensive profile between Filter and fast Roost, combined with one of the freest CM sets in the entire meta. This mon seems a bit awkward to slot on teams, but I expect it to do very well on the right build.

:rhyperior: - Probably the worst of the three winners potential-wise, but Rhyperior is still a force to be reckoned with. No Guard lets it use Dragon Rush for reliable Dragon STAB, and its very high physbulk lets it tank hits in order to deal big damage back, but I think in a meta where Armaldo is king and everything gets Ground coverage, most people will opt for other attacking options over Rhyperior.

Winners:

:arctovish: - Two new Water attackers just got added in Nymphamane and Drednaw, which is a big boost for the Permafrost mon. While at first you might think Drednaw is a bad matchup, Arctobyss actually just sets up for free on any Drednaw set without Special Attack investment, making it one of very few special attackers that isn't hurt too badly by Drednaw's existence.

:armaldo: - Armaldo managed to escape the nerf hammer post-PMPL and every new physical-attacking addition loses to it, so suffice to say it's still really really good. It is also a solid check to Drednaw with EQ, which is of course a benefit in what is likely to be a Drednaw-heavy meta.

:bellibolt: - Maybe I'm coping a bit on this one, but Bellibolt actually has insanely good matchups into both of the new SpDef Steels. Could there be potential for teams to run Bellibolt combined with other special attackers in order to muscle through defensive cores? Most likely no, but I sure hope they'll try at least!

:slither-wing: - If Drednaw overtakes Kabutops in usage like I expect it to, that is a massive boost for Combysa's viability. Combysa is basically the only special attacker that Kabutops beats but Drednaw loses to, so any decrease in Kabutops usage will lead to a proportional rise for Combysa.

:sandy-shocks: - One of the only meta special attackers that doesn't get hard countered by Drednaw. Not only that, Ferrous Force also has a real use case for its secondary effect now, as it heavily threatens both Drednaw and Espathra and makes them unable to switch into Magnestone reliably.

:tyrantrum: - Every new defensive addition loses to this mon, and one of its best checks in Bastiodon just got nerfed. I expect Tyrantrum stocks to continue to rise exponentially going forward.

Losers:

:bastiodon: - Between its nerf, the addition of Nymphamane, and most importantly Drednaw, Bastiodon stocks are at an all-time low. This mon just cannot do shit to AV Drednaw, which is going to be a massive hit to its viability.

:excadrill: - I expect Goldoco to completely fall out of the meta now that proper defensive Steels exist. Will most likely need a rework in the future.

:scream-tail: - Not as boned by Drednaw as you might expect, but Calm Mind sets are significantly worse now, as they actually just cannot ever break through that mon. Like, look at this calc:

+6 252 SpA Icaruff Boomburst vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Assault Vest Drednaw-Abyss: 141-166 (36.7 - 43.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

It's ridiculous. Either way though, defensive Icaruff is still very valuable in a lot of matchups, and Drednaw doesn't really do anything to stop those sets from keeping hazards off the field, so I'm sure the mon is still good.

:kabutops: - Drednaw not only eats this mon for breakfast, it also completely takes over the fat Regen pivot role from Kabutops, being better in 90% of circumstances. Kabu is still useful for when you want the utility of Spin or access to pivoting, but offensive sets are also going to fall off the face of the earth due to how hard they're countered by Drednaw.

:lapras: - This mon was already on thin ice with how much better Kabutops did the bulky Water role, but now that Drednaw exists I expect Lapras to be completely boxed out of the meta.

:flutter-mane: - This mon has only existed for a single slate and it's already catching strays. Drednaw completely shuts down everything this mon wants to do, so its viability is now tied to how common Drednaw is. May need to rework this mon to be less hard countered by Drednaw in the future.

:salazzle: - Ice resists not named Kabutops exist now. This actually cannot do anything to Nymphamane and Drednaw. It's so over for Salazzle fans rn.

In other news, Thick Fat Aurorus may now be worth running so you can set up on Drednaw, and Punk Rock Conkeldurr may be better than Nymphamane in the current meta, as it can actually threaten Drednaw with Focus Blast.

Next up is a Fakemon slate! The goal for this slate will be to create Fakemon from the prehistoric creatures listed above, and the rules for submission are as follows:
  • You can sub 1 to 3 of the prompts chosen in this slate.
  • Make sure your sub would be balanced in the current meta. Now that the meta is large enough, please be sure to justify your mon's competitive role in the sub.
  • Custom Elements are allowed, as long as they are different from already existing abilities/moves and are relatively simple to code (no custom field effects - we're learning from last gen lol. Also, if you think it's codable but our coder disagrees, then you'd better be prepared to code it yourself if it wins.)
