RE: Tier Inclusion & RBY Draft Formatting

Tier Inclusion
Whether RBYOMPL II will include 6 or 8 tiers will be decided by approximately Monday night, EST. The decision to include the additional tiers will be made based on the number and distribution of the signups. While these are not exact values, we are roughly aiming to see 100+ signups overall and 10+ unique signups per tier before we expand the tournament. Please understand: the presence of signups is the only factor contributing to the inclusion of the expansion tiers. If you are hoping to participate in the expansion tiers (RBY Draft and/or Stadium Rentals), I strongly encourage you to sign up as soon as possible because otherwise we as hosts will not know of your interest and will be more likely to exclude these tiers. I will remind you that you will be given a multiple-day warning during which you can request your signup post be edited or deleted if the expansion tiers end up being excluded. You can also preemptively lock out of tiers that you do not wish to play.
The two expansion tiers, RBY Draft and Stadium Rentals will either both be included or neither will be included.

RBY Draft Formatting
RBY Draft has been the subject of substantial speculation so I would like to clarify how I plan the format to work. Managers have received a version of this spiel already.
The draft will begin the week immediately after the player auction is done, and Week 1 of play will begin immediately after that. During the draft phase, each of the six teams will construct three separate draft rosters. By "draft roster," I mean the collection of Pokemon that the team has drafted and can use in-battle during the tournament. All six teams will participate in all three pools. The three drafts will run concurrently, but each one will start with a different team, being staggered such that each team will be guaranteed a first or second pick in one draft. The draft will snake in order until every team completes their draft. I am basing this draft roughly on my experience with the LGPL II Draft, if you want an example to pull from.
The draft board is currently in the works. It is primarily being prepared by me. The board is heavily influenced by the draft board created by Sabelette, which you can find here. I am making some adjustments to the board to better accommodate the larger pool of participating teams and address some concerns that have been brought up by prospective players of the format. I plan to limit the number of Pokemon per team to a fixed 8 and to ban a few Pokemon, as to make the first pick a less lopsided advantage. If RBY Draft is included in RBYOMPL II, I will reveal the Draft Board within roughly 24 hours after said announcement, as to provide ample time for review leading up to the auction and draft. I will state now that this draft board will not be perfect. While I have nearly ten years of experience with RBY at this point, I am merely one player and RBY Draft is a very young metagame that requires a lot of theorizing ahead of time to make work. But we must start somewhere. This tournament is a key opportunity to learn how to make this tier better and have fun doing it.
Regarding the draft games themselves, they will be played in a best-of-three format. At the start of each week, the managers of each team will provide their lineups as well as the draft roster (1, 2, or 3) that their RBY Draft player will be using during their set that week. Players may not swap their draft roster between the games of their set, but they may change their teams between the games.
To avoid any conflicts of interest, should I be drafted, I will not assist my team with the draft process during that first week.

Thank you for your patience and I apologize for any confusion.

RE: Tier Inclusion Continued

I am pleased to announce that with a current 98 signups, we are just barely able to expand RBYOMPL II to 8 tiers! RBY Draft and Stadium Rentals will be featured in RBYOMPL II! You can expect the draft board to be revealed tomorrow. Or you can go hound the managers... they've already seen what is very likely to be the final version. This does mean that the first week of RBYOMPL II will be spent performing the drafts, and thus play will start on the week of March 8th/9th.

Additionally, there is a correction to be made with respect to the OP. Each team will be required to have 11 Players at minimum (8 starters + 3 substitutes). The credit limit will be risen to 110k. The player cap of 14 will remain, unless many more signups appear, at which point another announcement will be made.

Cheers, and happy drafting!

RE: RBY Draft Board

Below you can find the link to the Draft Board for RBYOMPL II. It is a Google Sheets file. Managers and prospective players should familiarize themselves with the board and all the rules of the draft process. How the draft is set to occur is key to understanding the balance the board is designed around.

I anticipate that this board may be somewhat contentious, as this is a rather new metagame and lots of folks had shared opinions on how it should look. Please understand that this board was made conservatively, as to minimize the risk of overcentralizing Pokemon from utterly dominating the format and to encourage the use of a wide array of Pokemon. I have confidence that this board will produce a competitive and interesting format, and I look forward to improving upon it as we move into future tournaments. I really hope managers and players will agree. We really tried our best for y'all and want this to succeed.

RE: Nintendo Cup 1997 Rules

Games of NC97 played as part of RBYOMPL II will be played employing a so-called Struggle Clause. To be consistent with how NC97 was played on Japanese Red, Green, and Blue, Struggle will be banned. Much like how putting a Pokemon to sleep when the opponent already has a Pokemon asleep violates Sleep Clause and will result in the offending player forfeiting the game, clicking the move Struggle violates Struggle Clause and will result in the offending player forfeiting the game. If the only available move to the Pokemon on the field is to click Struggle, the player must either switch, if possible, or forfeit the game.

If you ever click Struggle, you lose, unless you and your opponent click Struggle at the exact same time, in which case you draw. Here are some cases worth understanding:
  • If one player has no choice but to click Struggle (i.e., they have only one Pokemon left with no PP) while the other player is not forced to click to Struggle, the player who can only click Struggle forfeits the game.
  • If both players have no choice but to click Struggle on the same turn (i.e., they both have only one Pokemon left and have run out of PP on the exact same turn), the game is a draw. Which Pokemon attacks first does not matter.
  • If both players have no choice but to click Struggle or switch (i.e., they both have multiple Pokemon left all with no PP) and they are incapable of dealing damage as the switching takes place (such as from burn or poison) such that switching could be repeated endlessly, the game is a draw.
    • However, if residual damage from sources like burn or poison can and do cause a player to be left with only one Pokemon that can only click Struggle or simply eliminate all the Pokemon on the opposing team, the player with remaining Pokemon that did not click Struggle wins the game.
  • Clicking Struggle forfeits the game even if Struggle is not executed. For example, clicking Struggle but being immobilized by paralysis, sleep, freeze, or confusion still forfeits the game.
    • However, clicking the FIGHT Button with no PP while being immobilized by a partial-trapping move does not forfeit the game.
As a reminder, drawn games are to be replayed, making no contribution to either player's score in a best-of-three set. Violating Struggle Clause is considered a game loss, not an immediate set loss.

The reasoning for this change can be found here. This approach makes RBYOMPL II consistent with the ongoing NC97 Circuit.

Separately, please note that Mimic is no longer banned, as it has been mechanically fixed since the first edition of RBYOMPL.

RE: Self-buy

The Aurafarming Jinwoos have self-purchased Hayburner and Mana, for 12.5k and 14.5k respectively.
Their new total is now: 110k - 12.5k - 14.5k = 83k.

The Mickey Mankeys have self-purchased gastlies, for 12.5k.
Their new total is now: 110k - 12.5k = 97.5k.

The Luckitungs have self-purchased ButtGallon, for 12.5k.
Their new total is now: 110k - 12.5k = 97.5k.

The Charmeleon Chokeslam have self-purchased King Billu and Zpice, for 12.5k and 14.5k.
Their new total is now: 110k - 12.5k - 14.5k = 83k.

The W i l d b u n g i s W e e d l e s have self-purchased WildCard782 and Gerbungis , for 12.5k and 14.5k.
Their new total is now: 110k - 12.5k - 14.5k = 83k.

RE: Stadium Rentals Metagame Information

The hosts and I have received a few questions regarding the Stadium Rentals metagame being featured in RBYOMPL II, which will be addressed here.

The rental Pokemon available to the players will be those normally available in Poké Cup Rentals. You may review the format on the SmogDex, which is linked here. Both players will bring teams consisting of up to 6 rental Pokemon. The metagame is played with team preview, and, because all Pokemon have exactly one selection of preset moves and stats, both players will begin each battle with full knowledge of their opponent's team. Stadium Rentals is played at Level 50. It is treated as an Anything Goes metagame, meaning Pokemon with sets containing normally illegal moves — like, for example, Guillotine or Minimize — are permitted for use. Matchups will be played in a best-of-three format, and players may elect to bring a different team in each game.

The rental Pokemon have unique preset stats as well as moves. For your convenience, the sets are provided below. They were prepared courtesy of ButtGallon. All teams should consist of Pokemon pulled from these boxes.
#001 Bulbasuar – #024 Arbok
#025 Pikachu – #047 Parasect
#048 Venonat – #071 Victreebel
#072 Tentacool – #095 Onix
#096 Drowzee – #119 Seaking
#120 Staryu – #143 Snorlax
#144 Articuno – #149 Dragonite

Players should use the following challenge command to initiate matches of Stadiums Rentals played for RBYOMPL II:
/challenge [Gen 1] Stadium OU @@@ Adjust Level = 50, ! Evasion Moves Clause, ! OHKO Clause

Players are required to use the !showteam command during every game they play, as to best ensure that the Pokemon they are using are legal. Failure to bring a legal team to a game will result in that game being forfeit.

There are ongoing efforts to create a format and validator for Poké Cup Rentals on Pokemon Showdown!, but these remain in the works. An announcement will be made if they are completed during the tournament. Again, a huge thanks to ButtGallon for preparing these resources for the tournament as we wait for official simulator support.
