Metagame Champions OU Metagame Discussion

Considering you can't even play 6v6 on Champions, and we are modify the tier to allow it; I see no reason to keep item clause. At the end of the day this is essentially a pet mod that allows us to play with Megas without the bloat/nonsense of NatDex. So why should we be super strict about keeping it 1 to 1?

If the aim of the tier [pet mod] is to preserve the feel of the Champions environment without subjecting to natdex rules, then why not stick to the natural rule(s) established by Champions?

Everyone is treating Mega Scovillain like is a useless mega, but I trust that with a bulky set and his ability will give the surprise
in doubles sunroom scovillain is funny, but in singles? no way, it´s just gonna remain as a venu sidegrade there with chloro

Hoping the rules are locked in sooner rather than later so Champions OU Metagame Discussion thread can start having discussion about the metagame, instead of begging for mechanics, which was what 70% of what discussion in the Legends OU Metagame thread was, making it 100% a dogshit thread experience.

Anyway, here is a potential squad I slapped together

:Garchomp::excadrill::dragapult::floette-mega::Greninja::rotom-wash:

Mega Floette is crazy good, it's so hard to face this Pokemon with basically Slowking-Galar as the only true defensive answer to this Pokemon

There's a difference between adopting what's in Champions because it's in Champions and adopting what's in Champions because it's how VGC works. The choice of dex and item list wasn't done because those were the only options for VGC. Implementing item clause was done only because VGC rules mandate it.

Then don't play it, this was the exact same thing with ZA OU and this format is just made for people who want to play it. I don't get the point of calling it "blatant larping", this tier is just as real as SV OU is lol.
Comparing this to ZA OU which had fake custom abilities only further validates my point: If this tier should exist at all, it should actually be a good format with abilities that fit the 6v6 singles environment instead of stuff like Stalwart Mega-Skarmory. People have free will and are allowed to play anything they want, but I don't personally see the value in exploring a bad fantasy format. The original justification for smogon not doing nerfs or buffs is staying faithful to official software, which adding 6v6 to a game that doesn't support it isn't.

This is a very weird point in my opinion, given that you could say the same thing about stuff like sleep clause or the entire tiering system or even stuff like the timer. Showdown has really never tried to be 100% accurate to the original game, and I don't see why this should be the exception. 6v6 doesn't exist in the main game, sure, but its always been the most used format for pokemon battles in the mainline games for forever, so I don't really see why this is so much larger of a jump than any of the other changes smogon makes. Also given how 3v3 is generally very niche/disliked and this is a third party battle simulator anyways, I don't see why we shouldn't change this for the vast majority of people who play 6v6 singles on this site.
Sleep clause was a mistake and yeah the timer should maybe be fixed to align with what's possible in game. Either way, doubling the number of allowed pokemon in a battle is a massive shift from what's possible in-game, much larger than the timer, and there's a valid argument that the timer is fine but 6v6 isn't. 3v3 sucking is a reasonable justification to not play the format OR to fix everything wrong with the game, not for the existence of a fantasy format for a fake video game that is both not real and not good. The concept of 6v6 Champions OU existing is as dumbfounding to me as Smash players fantasizing about microtransactions

His main issue is the opportunity cost of making him your Mega. Could do a decent job crippling the opponent but if you have rocks on your side, he’s getting chunked hard and if your opponent has a solid Fire type (either Mega Zard, M Emboar, M Delphox, Arcanine, Infernape, M Chandy, Volcarona, Skeledirge, and Armourouge) they have a very easy answer to it. There’s also the abundance of special attackers that can just accept the burn without too much issue.

Overall, the lost value on making him your mega and the abundance of acceptable solutions to skirt his ability makes him seem very, very lackluster in the 6v6 OU format. Hopefully lower tiers are built and he can find a home there.

Mechanical Differences from SV
Coming soon!
the mechanical differences are currently up on champion's bulbapedia page!
edit: some additional changes have been listed on serebii! (serebii is missing some changes listed on bulbapedia)

Tbf it does not need strong normal STAB to be good. Close combat plus fake out/swords dance and coverage should do pretty well in theory
i could see a wall breaker set with sd, cc, ice punch, and maybe thunder punch/any other coverage, i’ve seen people run giga impact lol

and i heard it got mach punch too? but it seems like it’ll just struggle against anything that resists fighting, losing frustration/return severely cripples it imo

If you don't want to play it, what are you doing in this thread? Its existence doesn't hurt you.

By virtue of being an official Pokemon product I don't think the 'Pet Mod' description really makes sense.

The reason why I'd want it kept as 1 to 1 with the official thing as possible (barring Pokemon bans is because there'd be no other point otherwise. The point of a Champions OU (if it comes to pass) would be to play Pokemon Champions, not a superficially similar format. Showdown tries hard to match catridge accuracy as much as possible so matching Champion's seems like a good priority.

Anyways, I want to talk about some Pokemon that will either be Extremely Annoying or just plain ol' Very Good.

:floette-mega:
As G-Luke already said, this mon will be strong as hell. With decent team support it'll probably be one of the strongest megas one could run into and its bulky as hell to back things up. At a glance, it does have 3-4 Pokemon that can slow it down, but two of them are Megas (Chimecho-Mega, Venusaur-Mega though a +1 Psychic does a ton of damage, Tinkaton, Slowking-galar) and Tinkaton can get worn down overtime. Save me, Slowking-Galar...

:excadrill:
No boots means you'll see the two magic bouncers pop up a bunch and Excadrill embarrasses both of them. Can beat Chimecho's ass and revenge-kills Floette-Mega. Plus Hippo's here if you're into that. I expect Excadrill to be very common.

:starmie-mega:
What if Mega Medicham had 20 extra speed and could use special attacking moves to beat Slowbro

:polteageist:
You can laugh but you'll remember this post when your glowking gets one-shotted by a polteageist behind aurora veil. Speaking seriously, though, I really do think that it could be a gigantic threat. The only real defensive counterplay is Umbreon and that's not getting played outside of stall. For offensive counterplay there's Aegislash/Mimikyu and not much else! There's a handful of offensive dark types but they all (a) take a lot of damage from Tera Blast and (b) are weak to rocks! Polteageist will muscle past them without issue imo.

:delphox-mega:
Rocks weakness sucks but its one of the fastest Pokemon in the format and can easily beat Slowking-Galar in a 1v1 with Fire Blast + Psyshock. Really any "fast strong special attacker" is going to go crazy due to the removal of Assault Vest.

From the looks of things the metagame will probably be extremely offense-oriented even if a lot of Pokemon get banned. Offense just eclipses defense by a country mile imo

i'm not sure what u mean but I can't speak for dhelmise/council
the enforced 20 minute battle timer which also continues through turn animations and text.

It would be physically impossible on the sim considering we can't simulate the animations but either way 20 minute time removal would be another 'mod'.

I tried building my first team for Pokémon Champions, centered around Mega-Chandelure:chandelure-mega:, the Mega form of my favorite Pokémon.

It's incredibly difficult to find suitable items that exist in Champions because there are so few of them. Damn, I had to use Fairy Feather because I had absolutely no ideas for what to equip it with; everything that could have been good is gone from the game.

Are the new megas going to be added to natdex now that they're available in a game that has abilities?
