Welcome to the Smogon Champions League 6 Discussion Thread -- RU edition! This thread will be used to discuss RU in SCL VI related topics, whether it’s about the players, general metagame trends, the prediction contest or matches. Teams, Replays, and Usage Stats will be posted as the tournament progresses!

The rules will be below and must be followed for your predictions to count:

- You need to submit predictions with a small justification (around one or two sentences) for them to count. Of course you can make predictions with no justification for fun, but know those won't count for the prediction contest.

- You need to do predictions for every series for it to count for the prediction contest. However, if you are a part of an SCL team and wish to not predict your team, you are allowed to do so (for example, if Feliburn wishes to participate but doesn't want to predict ABR's games since it's his player he is allowed. Same goes for ABR.)

- In the recap of the week, I will announce how many each of the participants of the prediction got right (for example, Beraldo predicted two out of the four winners correctly that week: he will get two points).

- You don't need to predictions every week to participate; remember it's for fun, and don't force yourself!

- The person with the most predictions right at the end of the tour will win!

- A game played before the 48 hour window closes will be voided on all predictions and not worth any points. Similarly, any matchup that is changed through players being substituted out will also be voided on all predictions and not worth any points. (Stolen shamelessly from the SCL prediction contest OP.)

I will try to find a small prize for the winner but TBD.

Hello, definitive preseason rankings below:
xavgb
hjkhj, DugZa
zugubu royale, lighthouses
Spitfire, robjr, THE_CHUNGLER
GaryTheGengar

Obviously I won't rank TheFranklin but, objectively, he should be top 2 in this pool to anyone who knows anything about RU. I think the gap between stresh and hjk/Dug is pretty small but I am optimistic his time away from mons is a net positive and he won't be rusty in the slightest. Diogo with Feli support ought to be really strong, look at last RUPL for some evidence of Diogo's ability to pilot strong balance teams in SV. Spitfire, rob, and Chung are really close but Spitfire has the most upside and I still think Chung needs to refine his late-game mentals before he can reliably be That Guy. GaryTheGengar is likely behind Cielau and the Platoons trolled the PR but if not then hey we just saw a classics player go positive in RU with strong support so maybe they can figure this out on the fly.

Want to preface this by saying the current meta is pretty volatile (when isn't an SV low tier?) and I expect some really cool interpretations of offense and cheese this tour. TheFranklin will load nothing but honest, faithful teams of course, but the rest of the pool has a ton to work with and the narrative behind some of these players like Diogo and Chung are pretty nice for those who care about that stuff.

Hey, let me share what the Islanders put for the PR:
1st: Xavgb - Not putting Xavgb 1st would feel wrong. I think everyone agrees he will prob go 6-3 or better. I feel like despite not playing last SCL that Xav is just... too good (glaze). Support for him isn't the most updated at sv ru but he knows his thing and is such a creative builder.

2nd: TheFranklin - I love Frank, in terms of pure RU player he's for me prob top 1 and def top 1 in SV. The Slam run was v impressive between the ru open finals and the slam finals with an unfortunate game ut it happens. I hesitated to put Frank as 1st a bit as he's one of the best ru builders and has some good building support. Maybe not 'pure' ru mains but they played the tier and know it well enough to help, give hindsight and quality test games.

3: hjkhj - hjkhj was always a weird player to me because I felt like surely at some point he would get counter teamed to death last scl. However he has the perfect mix of playstyles that it feels way too risky to try going for that. He's also a great player even when the matchup isn't great. I remember the game vs chung this rupl where the prep should've beaten hjkhj but he made some god plays and managed to win. The RULT finals is also a good sign of him being in form and with Heatran for prep (and I can also imagine Txunt! being a helper). I'm sure they'll do well.

4: DugZa - First thing to note is that I'm 0-3 vs Dug in low tier pls (0-2 rupl, 0-1 pupl). This means DugZa either is very good (possible) or just wants to beat my ass for fun (def both). More seriously I believe Dug will do well. He's a creative guy in the builder and will cook some solid shit with a few cool techs. My only fear is the lack of support which could mean he loads like specs tentacruel.

5: Zugubu royale - zugu is the 2nd person I know the least about. He won Slam so he knows his stuff. He's a bit active in Ru cord, joined rult etc so he knows what's he's doing. For me this is a wildcard pick. Since zugu is becoming prime LeBron (I believe he qualed for classic and olt also). But he could also flop a bit. Either way this is for me one of the players who could cause the biggest upsets.

6: Spitfire - Spitfire is cool, he helped save a bit the ru slot the machines last year which was I believe one of their weak points. I rate him quite highly and feel like he will do pretty well. etern and Shadow support is cool and I think he can outperform my ranking. Nobody in the starting slots is even close to mediocre so it's more a matter of who is a bit more goated.

7: THE_CHUNGLER - It seems scl managers belived in the chung as he was upbided quite highly. In terms of pure ru I put him and lighthouses/ diogo at the same level. He knows how to play well and has good support. Chung however is debuting in scl so he needs to prove himself it feels. It's a first step and I hope he proves me wrong.

8: Lighthouses - My rupl manager. I'm glad you got a spot and even better a starting one. This feels prob harsh to put you last as you know how to play and got the best support of the tour. It's more than idk a lot about how you do on the big stage for ru so couldn't have a proper placement. Take this one with a grain of salt.

10: GaryTheGengar - This is the person I know the least by far. I know they're considered one of the BW goats in ou and won b2b2b bw open which is crazy. I'm ranking them as a dark horse as I've never seen them play an sv tier in general. However they shouldn't be underestimated as Krystil showed that mons is mons.

Home you enjoyed the mini-pr and have a good day! :blobwizard:

Lots of exciting mus this week!

SV RU: lighthouses vs GaryTheGengar
SV RU: zugubu royale vs xavg
SV RU: DugZa vs Spitfire
SV RU: THE_CHUNGLER vs robjr
SV RU: hjkhj vs TheFranklin

SV RU: zugubu royale vs xavg - with this being week 1 and nobody really knows where everyone else is standing this is probably the obvious predict to make. Zugu won grand slam tho, a feat that maybe isnt getting the respect it deserves in a way. I do think that being the grand slam winner doesn't necessarily mean you are going to do well in one of its lower tiers but zugu also did quite well in ru open so. Team tours though (unfortunately) are best of 1 which is a bit of a different ball game and experience matters a ton so im going to go with the obvious for this. Do watch out for this game though because if zugu seems comfortable playing in the tier rocking a good team i reckon it can only go up from here after facing such a tough matchup out the gates. If he stalls hes going to lose.

SV RU: DugZa vs Spitfire - spitfire had a 4-1 record playing ru which i feel cant really be ignored but Dugza is kind of a freak. My guy is on every tour i look at and always with a positive record, with his official tours sheet career not being any different. Dugza actually does take the time to play in ru tournaments as well which i do feel makes a difference when it comes to experience, with my only question mark being his total lack of support.

SV RU: THE_CHUNGLER vs robjr - I know how good chung is from having bought him in rupl(paid good money too) i definitely think he can hang here in this stage and he has the maturity aspect as well when compared to other rookies where i dont think he will be shitting bricks while playing these matches. I play vs and in robs teams a lot throughout the year and hes undoubtedly pretty fire, ru struggles non withstanding. I really cant put a finger on who wins here between these two, need to see something first to get a better idea, this will probably be a very good and entertaining game.

SV RU: hjkhj vs TheFranklin - People do like to talk a lot about 'only loading honest teams' as if thats some huge setback but i tend to disagree. Im a big believer in hjks raw ability to play pokemon and i think he limits himself by flipping a coin and choosing between ho or stall. Im gonna be a bit harsh and predict that if he just does more of the same here then this game will go like the one from last year. Hjk!! Youre good at the game!! Stop cheesing!!

glhf everyone

SV RU: lighthouses vs GaryTheGengar - The early weeks of the tour will probably be the hardest espcially building wise for Gary as the knowledge of the tier isn't there. Kristyl also started pretty difficultly last year.
I think Diogo is someone you can rate as solid and knows his stuff. I think that Cielau and Esteb4n can't do a lot of magic on week one to not lose Gary on some crazy team meanwhile Diogo with god support will probably have something that's just knowledge diff abd the skill gap isn't that hig so it can't compensate.

SV RU: zugubu royale vs xavgb - Man RU this year has some bangers. I'm prob one of the people in RU who rate zugu the highest. You don't make 3 official playoffs in a span of 2-3 months by being average. He's good and underrated. I do have the fear that he will fall into cheesier structures vs someone like xav. It is however the best week to face him as he had a hiatus from RU and might not be innovating week 1.

SV RU: DugZa vs Spitfire - A very cool match. I rate both players but man is it hard not to bold DugZa here. He farms RUPL and follows the metagame a lot while Spitfire was more in retreat after SCL last year. The knowledge might be in favour of Dug but Spitfire does have some mates to help him polish his ideas. I can definitely see an upset here.

SV RU: hjkhj vs TheFranklin- The highlight of the week. Frank won last time they played in SCL and I believe he is more cheese immune proof than most people starting when it comes to hjkhj. He knows the lines of building something that will beat both ho and stall while not being fish.

Good luck everyone and may the best win!

SV RU: lighthouses vs GaryTheGengar - I think this is pretty self-explanatory, Diogo has strong showings in SV lately with some of the best support you can get in Feliburn and rabbit while Gary does not have much, if any, SV to look at on top of support that I wouldn't bank on. To be fair, Gary is probably better at mons as a whole by a small margin and we've seen classic gens players come into SV and click well enough to squeeze out wins, but doing that week one is a tough ask.

SV RU: zugubu royale vs xavgb - Stresh is getting bolded vs everybody in this pool unless he just completely checks out mentally or has a stroke trying to decipher how the previous tiering actions resulted in the current state of affairs in the meta. This is not to say that zugubu could not potentially steal one early as stresh gets back into the groove but I do not think time away will have an impact here for stresh and this is his pool until proven otherwise.

SV RU: DugZa vs Spitfire - DugZa is generally higher regarded in SV and more experienced in RU but I rate Spitfire as a clicker pretty well and think he looked comfortable last year playing the tier, on top of having etern in his channel to cook up some interesting stuff this time around. This game will probably favor Dug's familiarity in the tier but I do think the most likely person to "break out" in this pool is Spit and him taking a win vs a strong opp week one would not surprise me.

SV RU: THE_CHUNGLER vs robjr - Chung is very likeable and has continued to get better year-over-year but still just completely drops the ball in-game sometimes and has a penchant for making unnecessarily greedy plays (that usually work out). If you watch some of his games you'd probably think he has a really high ceiling, if you watch others you probably think he has a really low floor, and if you watch all of his games you probably go what the fuck is this guy doing most of the time. Rob, on the other hand, is about as steady as it goes when given competent teams and I think Slikkles is a small upgrade to Flab in terms of providing competent teams. I think these guys are both headed towards 4-5 type seasons and think rob gets the win here to start his campaign sooner.

SV RU: zugubu royale vs xavgb - When I go play OU I steal this guy's teams all the time, then I heard he was even better at RU. From what I hear this guy is Thanos so if he loses I blame RU cord gassing him up especially Ming549

SV RU: DugZa vs Spitfire - As a newgen I don't know spitfire, but I do know DugZa and his gameplay in all tiers has impressed me with RU being no exception.

SV RU: THE_CHUNGLER vs robjr - Chungler is someone who clearly has potential based on subforum tour sheets and gameplay in replays. He is also on my team for RUWC so I gotta bold him #NoBias

SV RU: hjkhj vs TheFranklin - Last year the successful strategy for the Shoguns in RU was to switch between HO and fat teams which franklin was able to prepare for and hand hjk a loss, however I think both hjk and heatranator are more complete players now and will be able to flex their versatility this season and bring something less predictable (or just bring sun and win)

SV RU: lighthouses vs GaryTheGengar

i think most people here are familiar with diogo and the gibles enough to the point where I don't need to talk super in depth about why he should be favored so instead i will spend a bit of time talking about gtg and why I think this is going to be an interesting week for him. coming into this tour gary is definitely the biggest question mark in the pool having never played ru or even sv in a meaningful tour setting before. that being said i think diogo will be a pretty good litmus test for how the season will pan out in general for the platoons. as has been mentioned across several platforms at this point diogo+feli+mc is like just outright the strongest ru engine in the tour, so if gtg and the platoons in general can hang with them boys in the builder/in game there really isnt any reason to believe he can't be competitive vs everybody else in the pool even vs other "stronger" pilots. OR he could do the cop out maneuver and just bring HO or stall every week which is also a totally valid strategy as has been displayed in the past. whichever way it plays out though we get a lot of info about the approach the platoons are gonna take this season which is pretty cool

SV RU: zugubu royale vs xavgb

considering zugubu beat frank in slam finals in a game clinching g5 ru its not inconceivable he takes this game off stresh. but like considering british mans past results and how consistent he looks all the time i still think it should be heavily favored towards him. the overall body of work in ru is much more impressive to me when you consider that rupl+scl stint from stresh a couple years ago compared to zugubus slam showings. worth noting zugubu has already shown a few times over that he is willing to just engage with dishonest team brings though so that should also be considered as a factor that will probably heavily sway how volatile this matchup will be

SV RU: DugZa vs Spitfire

omg they put the besties vs each other week 1. dug himself has rated spitfire pretty highly in ru in the past, i remember specifically like during his run in slam last year he mentioned how involved spitfire was helping him prep and laddering in ru and stuff. with that context i think dug and spitfire are probably pretty close overall in game when it comes to ru so then i consider the builder and who might have the edge there. i have no clue who the foxes have helping out in their chat so as of right now im kinda led to believe dug is just on his own? which is like fine its still dug he did really good in sv during rupl when he slotted in for those couple games but also spitfire has etern support which means a lot of nonconventional stuff is on the table and i think will probably be a boon for spitfire? i'll need a couple weeks to see for sure what that stylistic match is gonna be or if etern is even gonna have a large hand in the ru prep but for now ill choose to believe in that support and give spitfire the bold

SV RU: THE_CHUNGLER vs robjr

RAHHHHH CHUNGLER DEBUT. i like chungler a lot and think his starter spot is overdue, this guys the truth. that being said robjr is coming off his best rupl this decade so like, if he continues the historical trend of doing much much much better in scl than rupl then like hes basically the favorite for best record this tour and i will actually be treating him in that manner until proven otherwise (he loses)! now he did get fucked up last year in scl and for that, i have no answers i do not understand how that happened but yknow it is what it is. chunglers still my goat tho and his ingame is both pretty strong and fairly unique so even if i bold against him in my heart i am rooting for him (also we're gonna cover this game for rutube if its possible like at all)

SV RU: hjkhj vs TheFranklin

franks heat and hjk is predictable and is very proud of the fact at this point. even when considering last years resutls frank was one of the few who took a game off hjk so like i think its just a bad matchup for hjk. of course when ur talking about HO and stall though you can always just roll an autowin matchup or something but also frank will also probably not bring a team that would autolose to both so, meh. i think itll be a fun game for sure but i think frank is definitley just turbo favored

Last week was the week of upsets. Whenever it's zugubu beating xavgb or TheFranklin abd DugZa losing. The new faces show they aren't to be underestimated.

The biggest correct predicts is two with Ming and HisuiHeat.

Week 1 replays

hjkhj vs xavgb
Spitfire vs zugubu royale
TheFranklin vs GaryTheGengar
lighthouses vs robjr
THE_CHUNGLER vs DugZa

hjkhj vs xavgb - Neither player looked convincing last week, with hjk getting a dynamic punch self hit t1 to basically seal the game off lead while stresh timed out in a (basically) lost game vs snow. Theo did not load full stall but his team was still pretty slow overall and stresh should be a lot more linear in prep and play presumably.
Spitfire vs zugubu royale - Spitfire looked good last week while zugu just loaded snow (in a meaningless game). This is the most likely ho mirror game this week but realistically spit leans into anti-cheese while zugu probably cheeses.
lighthouses vs robjr - Diogo cheesed an old gens player week one, the disrespect... his team seemed fine but realistically Gary could've made that a much closer game despite subpar sets. Rob, meanwhile, has demonstrated an inability to pilot teams passed by Le French support for the second year in a row.
THE_CHUNGLER vs DugZa - Chung chungled and Dug didn't Tera in a really close game for reasons unknown. I lean Dug just based on playing ability but Denial and co did cook up a good team for chung w1 and he has some sort of narrative-driven plot that results in wins...

i got every single one wrong last week lmfao

hjkhj vs xavgb - timed out last week after missing a game losing leaf storm, dont have much to go off of just yet. hjk didnt cheese and won !! he will surely cheese here though.
Spitfire vs zugubu royale - dodged a game winning leaf storm and won via timeout, still not much to go off of
TheFranklin vs GaryTheGengar - the goat will surely not lose two in a row
THE_CHUNGLER vs DugZa - good game alert woo!!

5/10 teams brought last week were HO, it technically won 3/5 games but i think the context behind those games was weird, one was hax + timeout and one was from a mirror match. I dont believe HO dominates this tier but this may be the conclusion players come to in scl meta specifically, i guess we will see

Team preview:
lighthouses (Diogo) decided to bring a Sticky Web team as to cover mostly HO or Stall with Bisharp Webs for the first and mons like Nasty Plot Mew for the second. Gary brought a BO with what will be revealed to be support Comfey similar to a known RU face Daharan. The team has pretty good outs vs most HOs but Webs could get tricky as the speed control is heavly nerfed. Priority isn't the strongest.

The game:
Diogo leads with Ribombee to set up Webs while Gary decided to lead with Cyclizard. The lead is won by Diogo as Rocks don't go up with Registeel turn one and Diogo will manage to keep the Webs up all game preventing offensive pressure. Flygon will quickly sweep as the game state quickly became dire for Gary. A dominant showing from Diogo as the prep was the perfect fit.

The preview:
zugubu comes in as an underdog in this first set, last time xavgb played RU in SCL they went 8-2. zugubu decided to bring a playstyle that fell off popularity quite a bit in recent times with Snow. With Light Clay banned in RU, you go for the icy Rock and try and make some holes mainly with Toxtricity and finish the job with Cetitan. Xavgb brought a BO with favourites of the person who wrote this analysis (Gligar and Bombirdier) and some other less used mons like Rotom-Mow and Reuniclus. Only two pokemon here are RU by usage for stresh (other name for xavgb) in Empoleon and Entei. It is an interesting structure which can be imagined as a Spikes stack that isn't weak to hazards going well with his ability to innovate.

The game:
The game starts with a lead Crawdaunt vs Empoleon. zugubu went with the safe lead of Sash Crawdaunt as it is always that set to do damage. Empoleon was probably led to get Rocks up versus Ninetales-A. This was probably a lack of knowledge from stresh. Crawdaunt will trade for Bombirdier. After that stresh will try to keep up Rocks but can't manage to. Rotom-Mow is forced to tera Steel to try and chip Cetitan but misses as it clicks an attack. The damage has been done and despite stresh timing out the game was looking dire. A big upset for zugubu who could advance with confidence in this week 2.

The preview:
Spitfire is mostly known for his agressive teams and he didn't disappoint. This offense is set to bring power and strong priority with Technician Breloom (uncommon at the moment in RU) and Lycanrock-Dusk. Added to that a sweeper on the rise with tera Ground Moonlight. Regieleki is a bold choice as the mon is basically never seen in important tour play. DugZa brought an HO he has used a lot in the past but with some sets modifications. This HO is interesting as Yanemega is often used on HO with a lead that prevents hazards from going up or Maushold. Drednaw has never been really seen so interesting mon to see.

The game:
Breloom leads off expecting Kleavor. The game itself will mostly be a trade war. A turning point is the Drednaw vs Necrozma. Drednaw Shell Smashed anticipating a Dragon Dance by Necrozma as an opportunity to get get massive damage on Yanmega. This doesn't work out forcing Yanmega to take some damage. Shadow Ball activated Empoleon's Competitive either way. After that it still looks good for DugZa as Mimikyu should beat Regieleki but this is the HisuiHeat set with Life Orb physical Eleki with tera Normal meaning Spitfire barely wins.

Replay:
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/smogtours-gen9ru-969040

The preview:
The only set without an HO this week 1. robjr brought a BO that seems to focus on getting a Cresselia endgame with a Technician Breloom (if I had a nickel meme). THE_CHUNGLER (I will call him chung) brought a spike stacks team that aims to put pressure on with an added Taunt 3 attacks Krookodile to break. The match up seems pretty is favour of chung with a Jirachi shutting down Cresselia and some solid tools to deals with the BO of robjr.

The game:
The game starts with a huge momentum swing for chung by preventing Rocks and getting a suprise KO on Breloom very early. Added with some good plays, chung manages to keep that early lead alive and quickly forces robjr down to his last two pokemon. Suicune seems like it should win easy win but Quag reveals to be Water Absorb. robjr needs to get some turns right and come in and set up with Cresselia while Suicune is forced to Rest. With a triple Toxic miss meaning the game is nearly over which is made quicker by a Scald crit.

Replay:
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/smogtours-gen9ru-969449

The preview:
hjkhj decided to to change from his typical Stall/ HO playstyle to a more fat oriented one. It is very similar to a sample team with an Empoleon over Registeel and some EVs changed which will matter in this game. Frank brought an HO, an unusual pick from his typical BO style. It seems to be clearly built around beating HO and Stall.

The game:
The turn 1 will be a big decider of the game. Golurk leads vs Crawdaunt. Golurk reveals to probablybe Jolly and click Dynamic Punch and gets the self hit confusion making it get a free kill. Craw getting the KO on Golurk would've opened Kleavor a lot which we will see is a huge threat. Everything seems to go right for hjkhj. The turn 6 will be very important later on as Bisharp clicks Throat Chop on Umbron coming in making it take Rocky Helmet chip. On turn 18, it's 6 mons for hjkhj who are nearly all very healthy vs the last two of Frank, Entei and Bisharp. After getting the KO on Golurk, Entei goes for the Swagger trade vs a Draco from Noivern. Not wanting to risk it, hjkhj sacks Empoleon which Frank reads. hjkhj goes into Noivern hoping to bait in a tera Normal espeed by going into Rocky Helmet Amoongus. However Frank reads it and Sacred Fires again getting the game closer very quickly. He trades Entei for damage on Cresselia and letting Bisharp getting a free SD. However, Bisharp needs a second SD to do enough damage to Umbreon but with Foul Play damage and the tiny chip of the Rocky Helmet on Bisharp earlier, it dies to it making hjkhj win on a tight margin.

Hope you enjoyed it and see you next week! :blobwizard:
