Snoopy was 10 steps away from an encounter with the colossus, because he spent half his steps trying to go down a tunnel that was blocked by a steel gate like an idiot (read Hint #6, fren).

chester0334 was 6 steps away from an encounter with the colossus, because he went down the right path.
