It's from physically plugging your cartridge into the powersaves device (irrespective of the software). Mine is actually pretty good, but I've heard that some are a bit rough on pins, and makes it so that the 3DS can't properly read the cartridge anymore. Still, this is over extensive use, so a long-term concession, not a short-term problem.
