The majority of their songs are very heavy, such as BYOB, Revenga, Cigaro, Sugar, War?, Mind, Attack, Prison Song, Toxicity, Psycho, etc just to name the ones off the top of my head.
The general rule is that a band is classified as Metal if the majority of their songs fit the label. Sure, songs like Soldier Side and Hypnotize are much less heavy, but by that logic, Metallica wouldn't be Metal because "Nothing Else Matters" and "Load" as a whole.

being heavy doesnt make you metal. swans are heavier than the vast majority of metal bands and no one would ever call them metal. nirvana have some very heavy songs but no one would ever call them metal. soad are alt rock/metal. this is not a "true" metal genre in my opinion but thats not a negative thing so who cares, dismissing or accepting a band based on what specific genre they are is stupid

I don't dismiss them, but I will argue that they are, in fact, Metal.

you may as well call everything as "heavy" as foo fighters metal then

lumping things into categories they dont belong leads to misrepresentation of genres. if someone got linked slipknot as "the most brutal death metal ever" then they could love or hate "death metal" based on something that isnt even close to it
