n_n looks nothing like ^_^ though, I never understood that. n_n looks like you are tired or kinda shy/reserved whereas ^_^ is very overtly happy

Yeah I agree, though I think n_n is a reserved happy face, while :D is just generally very happy, ^_^ is more of a cheerful face, ^-^, is a content face

because using emoticons = more friendly i think! though i only use the common ones like :P, :3, :D, :s, c:, :c , xD

Yeah, I agree that they're a great way to at least try to express emotion through chat messages, although sometimes they can become overused.

Also sometimes I even think IRL that people didn't understand the intonation well so that a smiley would be perfect but I can hardly say that :P
