PS ladder on the main server is your best bet (definitely not smogtours): https://play.pokemonshowdown.com/ You can find sample teams to get started here: http://pastebin.com/zpYdz5ng but definitely use them as a starting point (hint: use an Alakazam lead instead of whatever leads are in these teams, it's much more reliable especially for beginners).
