Welcome to Smogon! Take a moment to read the Introduction to Smogon for a run-down on everything Smogon, and make sure you take some time to read the global rules.
Tyranitar also makes a great partner to Lunatone, as the chip damage against opposing mons is nice as well as the much appreciated Spdef Boost from sand. This is a little problematic though as both have great niches as rockers.
How did I not think of this, I've been trying to make a Agil-Meteor-Herb Setup set work, but I'm going to test out this set you linked as this seems extremely interesting and unique. When I make my post in the OU thread about Lunatone, would you mind if I included your set in the discussion? (You'll be tagged and credited of course for coming up with the set).
in conclusion, Lunatone covers 3 mons that are hard to cover for balance teams (Heatran, Nidoking, and Dragonite) and it is unique in the fact that it can cover all three in one slot: Most counters to one (Hydreigon, Blissey, Zapdos) lose terribly to the other two
I haven't tried it out in OU as I made it up only about 20 minutes after seeing your post. Sorry if I've been spamming your wall but forums has this nasty character limit. And yea, you could include the set if it ends up working. The EVs probably aren't optimal, i might come back and optimize them later.
Wonderful! Yeah I'm going to test the set in OU on one of my balance teams and see how it comes up, and whether the EVs can be tweaked a little higher or lower to up the power output.
Yeah, it seems as though giving Lunatone's defenses a workover across a more neutral EV spread works wonders comparatively. The character limit in personal messages absolutely sucks x-x
Lunatone doesn't acutally need a huuge power boost, as it still gets the 2HKOs it needs on Nidoking, Spdef Heatran (the most common 252 Hp 128 Spdef spreads), Moltres, and Zapdos. Dragonite isn't a 2HKO through multiscale but with a partner Tyranitar the sand chip breaks Nite's scale.
Ttar + Lunatone looking good if it wasn't for Mag, although against a chipped Stored Power Draining Kiss Mag Lunatone can sometimes win 1v1 in sand. Not something to bank on tho lol.
I think when you post it you should also post in the VR thread so we can get this thing ranked. It is a little extra work to provide the replays but i think getting our moon buddy up there would be great
Lunatone @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 84 HP / 160 Def / 44 SpA / 160 SpD / 60 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Power Gem
- Earth Power
- Stealth Rock
- Protect
I've arrived at this spread, which hits the Dnite Dragon Claw benchmark, hits 0 speed Tran's benchmark, avoids the 4HKO from Nidoking Sludge Wave after Lefties, and rest in SpA.
the final 2 benchmarks are kind of arbitrary, as no tran run 0 speed and Nidoking will never touch you with Sludge Wave anyways. I just don't know how much speed to put, and we don't need more SpA as i already 3HKO lefties mag and it will never 2HKO dnite through multiscale without modest.
Sadly Lunatone is outclassed by Flygon (who also has a niche), as Flygon performs a similar role while also being faster, stronger, electric immune, and packing Uturn. However Lunatone's neutrality to ice and dragon means it can take on Dragonite and most importantly be more consistent against Nidoking.
So I've pretty much come to the same conclusion that 84 speed is a great benchmark for that set, I still need to do some more testing but I'll probably post about Lunatone in the OU group tomorrow, then I'll try to get some matches for the VR thread as well!
Ok great. Thanks for playing the matches for Lunatone! I'm pretty low ladder atm so my matches wouldn't do well for anything, not to mention finals Maybe you could try Flygon too, it performs a similar defensive role but it also has great pivoting capabilities + can threaten Glowking.
