Ok the synopsis is this: The earth is being wrecked my humans (basically what is happening today in real world), and the earth spirit Gaia has become enraged and corrupt. So after a series of natural disasters that wiped out 3 billion people. To solve this the Omnipotes held a summit in Seattle at the redesigned space needle. But the President Sirius didnt want to save the humans, he wanted to wipe out the remaining humans and try to appease Gaia. After his announcement a civil war broke out. The ratio is 4:1, for every 4 anti-human Omnipotes there is 1 pro-human Omnipote. The anti-humans are assembling in Berlin with Sirius, while the pro-human Omnipotes are assembling in Olympia, Washington. The pro-human Omnipotes are under the guidance of an orginization called the Syndicate. And currently the Syndicate base is at risk of an invasion we arent prepared for. That's basically it so far.

A cool replacement for the Phoenix could be the Harpie Eagle. Its the biggest Bird of Prey in the world

Well that sucks (that you've had bad experiences in RPGs), and yeah, seems pretty good. Try and put a few weakneses into your ability though... or just dont use it in Uber powerful/unfair/cheap ways (read: almost any posts by Team Magma Boss Maxie for examples). The only other problem I see is the Phoenix... since it is "real world" (I'm ingoring super powered people and the Earth Spirit), mystical creatures dont exist... you might have to change that part. Other than that its A-OK. Once you set it up I'll fill you in on the details of the RP so you can join in right away
