About Magic Coat, you are assuming correctly. If, for example, an opposing Smeargle uses Dark Void and you Coat that, only Smeargle gets hit but not its partner =) /E: And your partner Pokémon would still get hit, so you'd need Protect, a Chesto/Lum Berry or someting along those lines
