ORAS Megas - OM Edition

approved by Hollywood

With the coming of ORAS, many new mega evolutions have been unveiled. The purpose of this thread is to discuss how they will impact various metagames! What we're looking for it sets, mainly, so we can compile a bunch of sets so that once ORAS is out and we're actually able to play with them, we have a thread to look through and find sets to test how they affect various metagames. Please, post sets and descriptions! Feel free to comment on anyone else's sets as well, if you think they can be improved.

Here's an example of a good post:
STABmons - Mega Beedrill

Beedrill @ Beedrillite
Ability: Swarm
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Megahorn
- Gunk Shot
- Drill Run
- Coil

Beedrill will be a new and popular threat when it is released, with a high Speed stat backed by a high Attack stat, it sure will have to be looked out for. Adaptability increases the power of Beedrill's already high STAB moves and enables it to carve out a new niche. Coil meshes well with both Megahorn and Gunk Shot thanks to their accuracy, now being boosted by Coil. Drill Run allows Beedrill to get around Steel-types, which otherwise wall it. Coil also has an added benefit of enabling Beedrill to better handle priority from the likes of Diggersby. A unique thing about Mega Beedrill is that it's actually quite good at countering Mega Altaria as well, with it only having a 2% chance to 2HKO with Boomburst. Meanwhile, Gunk Shot easily OHKOes in return. A few things must be accounted for when using Beedrill. Firstly, its bad stats prior to mega evolving really hold it down, so a slow U-turn or Volt Switch to bring it on something slower than it that it threatens is a wise idea. Secondly, Skarmory walls this to hell and back, making Magnezone a good choice for a partner. Finally, Stealth Rock could become a problem, but running a Defog or Rapid Spin user is a good way to mitigate this problem. Looking to be quite the threat!
and here's an example of a bad post:
Mega beedrill is cool! in STABmons it can run attack order to destroy all the things xD. megahorn is brought up, but it's accuracy is bad and it's not always hitting. i could run coil, but it's not a bulky pokemon and thus shouldn't boost defense, so i run knock off instead. ALSO it could try running a choice specs set LOL with that massive 15 spa xD :p. hmm, what youg uys hting?? will it be banned?? i want it banned, let's ban it. banHAMMER lolololol xD!
Basically: don't shitpost.

Balanced Hackmons:

Diancie-Mega @ Pixie Plate or Life Orb
Ability: Pixilate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe or 252 SpA / 4 Atk / 252 Spe
Hasty or Naive Nature
- Fake Out
- ExtremeSpeed
- Boomburst
- Diamond Storm

This set is really obvious. Fake Out, ExtremeSpeed, and Boomburst are all strong, Pixilate-boosted stabs coming off of the 160 base Attack/Special Attack you possess. Diamond Storm is your secondary STAB option. There are several other alternate options for moves however, such as: Magma Storm (Gets past Steel types and kills Sturdinja if it connects), Infestation (Just kills Sturdinja but cannot typically miss), Explosion (110 speed isn't bad at all, and allows you to pull off a powerful explosion before you die), King's Shield or Spiky Shield (A nice protect move that either lowers attack in most cases or deals damage to contact attackers including Sturdinja), U-turn or Volt Switch (A switching move that allows you to scout), or some other things that I'm forgetting.

On my phone, but here's a nice BH set:

Mega Audino with Leftovers or Rocky Helmet
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def with a Bold nature
Ability: Prankster
- Encore
- Substitute
- Recover
- Baton Pass

A Prankster Arceus with better typing. This stops Mega Gengar cold. It doesn't care about Secret Sword, unlike Arceus, and can Encore into Judgment or Shell Smash after switching in and prevent a sweep. Then, as its victim switches out, it can set up a sub and BP to a teammate.

So regenvest slowbro will be all the rage in balanced hacmmons being able to counter kyube and check bolt strike variants but quite frankly those are pretty much extinct. I can see it being quite the wall with its titanic defense somewhat outclassing ogre because for the record, while ogre has more offensive presence bulk is the main selling point of a regenvester this is what I can see the set being:
Slowbro-Mega @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
- Volt Switch
- Moonblast
- Scald
- Nuzzle
This might not be the best moveset but it is really effective at beating kyube who will probably be even more common being able to tackle threats like mega rayquaza and salamence along with yveltal.

STABmons

Altaria @ Mega Stone
Ability: Natural Cure --> Pixilate
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe or 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Shell Smash / Belly Drum
- Boomburst
- Spacial Rend / Oblivion Wing / Fire Blast / Earthquake
- Extreme Speed

GG world. Pixilate got Sylveon banned in STABmons and it had the same Special Attack but lower Speed and Attack. Now meet a Pokemon with access to Normal, Flying, and Dragon, better Attack, better Speed, comparable bulk, and a better movepool. I cheated and basically put two sets up at once, but you get the point.

Luckily, since Altaria can't hold a Sitrus Berry or Focus Sash, it's vulnerable after a Drum/Smash, assuming it can't OHKO the incoming target with Pixilate boosted Extreme Speed.

PU - Mega Glalie

Glalie @ Mega Stone
Ability: Inner Focus -> Refrigerate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Nature: Jolly
- Double-Edge / Return
- Explosion
- Earthquake
- Spikes / Super Fang

Honestly I will be very surprised if this is PU by usage or even allowed in PU, but holy shit this thing will be a monster there. Its Base 100 Speed is enough to outspeed almost the entire tier, trolling Gourgeist-S by 2 points. Double-Edge is for POWER, and stuff like this:
252 Atk Refrigerate Glalie Double-Edge vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Sneasel: 193-228 (76.8 - 90.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Refrigerate Glalie Double-Edge vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Flareon: 182-214 (54.4 - 64%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Refrigerate Glalie Double-Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Musharna: 193-228 (44.2 - 52.2%) -- 76.6% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Refrigerate Glalie Double-Edge vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Throh: 276-325 (62.1 - 73.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Refrigerate Glalie Double-Edge vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Rotom-F: 114-134 (47.3 - 55.6%) -- 75% chance to 2HKO
while Return gives up some of this ridiculous wallbreaking power for increased staying power, though 80/80/80 bulk still isn't winning any awards. Explosion allows Glalie to sacrifice itself for delicious damage, and since Glalie will be one of few, if any, megas in the lower tiers, there's not even an opportunity cost to using it. Add that to the fact that only Avalugg, Metang, Klang, Bastiodon, Poliwrath, Lapras, and Walrein can survive Double-Edge followed by Explosion (and quite a few of those mons hate Earthquake), and you've got a monster on your hands. The last slot is a toss-up: Spikes takes advantage of forced switches while Super Fang can put quite the dent in a few of the mons listed above--most notably, Poliwrath is KOed by Super Fang+Explosion after SR.

Not sure how long Sceptile is going to stay NU by usage, but in the meantime, it looks damn deadly in Tier Shift with 160 base SpA and Spe.

Sceptile @ Sceptilite
Ability: Overgrow
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest/Timid Nature
-Leaf Storm/Giga Drain
-Dragon Pulse
-Focus Blast/Substitute
-Hidden Power Fire/Hidden Power Rock/Substitute

This is just a special set, but its offenses are good enough on both sides that it can easily go mixed as well with that nice 125 base Attack and movepool containing stuff like Leaf Blade, Dragon Claw, Thunder Punch, and Low Kick, among other things.

STABmons

Lopunny-Mega @ Lopunnite
Ability: Scrappy
EVs: 88 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def / 164 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Protect
- Swords Dance
- ExtremeSpeed
- Drain Punch

STABmons already has two great Scrappy ExtremeSpeed users (Kangaskhan + Stoutland), but Mega-Lopunny gives them some serious competition with its higher attack, speed and additional Fighting STAB (which gives it unresisted coverage bar Shedinja).

I feel like Swords Dance is the way to go here since it cannot hold a Sitrus Berry to mitigate the health loss from a Belly Drum (although Drain Punch helps if you want to go down that route) or a White Herb to prevent the stat drops from Shell Smash (plus it doesn't really need the extra speed when it's mostly going to be spamming ExtremeSpeed).

Protect is to dodge Fake Outs from potential revenge killers or can be used to safely Mega-evolve if needed. 164 speed EVs allow it to outspeed Jolly Terrakion once mega evolved ( the fastest relevant ExtremeSpeed resist bar Aerodactyl) so you can just Drain Punch it and not have to switch out and lose your boosts.

This set can't really touch Skarmory and does not appreciate the King's Shield 50/50s vs other Steel types so Magnezone is a great partner. Landorus-Therian also walls it pretty well, but Mega Lopunny is looking like it'll be a solid late game cleaner

stabmons:

pidgeot @ pidgeonite
Ability: Big Pecks
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Nature: Timid
- Hurricane/Oblivion wing
- Heat wave
- Boomburst
- Roost/Shell smash/ Sing

Behold our savior new bird to play with. pidgeot mega will carve a niche in stabmons due to its ridiculous base power spammable moves. pidgeot is currently the strongest user of boomburst, items cast aside, and thus, really should be running it. and with 140 base power nuke mixed with 135 special attack, its bound to tear a few big holes in the opponents team. Hurricane will be the second go to stab, because 120 base power is very powerful, and with no guard it really should be spamming hurricane. however oblivion wing is always an option to consider if you feel like hurricanes power isn't a necessity and you would rather have minor healing over 40 extra base power. Heat wave is the best coverage move pidgeot has, and it allows pidgeot to ko some things it normally would be able too. and allthough pidgeot lacks something to hit rock type attacks with (gdi gamefreak, the one poke that wishes it had focus miss) it at least lets it hit the problematic steel types that otherwise wall it. Roost can be used for recovery, shell smash for setting up. and sing because noguard buffs it to perfect accuracy and it goes through substitute.

Rayquaza and primal pokemon are only relevant in 350 cup, Balanced/Classic Hackmons, and Megamons, thus I'm gonna attempt to make sets for these three for 350 cup and Megamons
Rayquaza-M @ LO/Choice Band/Rayquazite(in case you want to avoid Koff)
Extreme Speed
Dragon Ascent
Outrage/Dragon Claw
Overheat/Draco Meteor/Earthquake

Rayquaza @ LO/Choice Specs/Rayquazite
Extreme Speed/Air Slash
Draco Meteor/Dragon Pulse
Overheat/Fire Blast
Surf/Ice Beam/Thunderbolt

Rayquaza @ LO/Focus Sash/Leftovers/Rayquaza
Extreme Speed
Outrage/Dragon Claw/Draco Meteor/Overheat
Dragon Ascent
Dragon Dance

Rayquaza @ Rayquazite
basically the same sets as above since I'm lazy
I'll post for Kyogre and Groudon later.

Balanced Hackmons

Rayquaza-Mega @ White Herb
Ability: Multiscale
EVs: 80 HP / 4 Atk / 80 SpA / 172 SpD / 172 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Oblivion Wing
- Thousand Arrows / Precipice Blades
- Spacial Rend
- Shell Smash

This set intends to take advantage of it's good 105/100/100 bulk to allow it to sweep. Even with such little investment, after a single shell smash, it will essentially have 794 attack, 832 special attack, and 678 speed! Oblivion Wing should be able to heal a ton of health, and if you reach max health, then Multiscale will double your bulk! Thousand Arrows is for bypassing special walls and hitting things that resist it's other moves pretty hard. Because it can hit flying types, it means they no longer rule there's not much that can bypass it. Precipice Blades is for a stronger option if you would prefer. The 85% accuracy is annoying, but I think it's worth it. Spacial Rend serves as a secondary STAB for if you need some more power.

Slowbro @ Slowbroite
Ability: Regenerator --> Shell Armor
EVs: 252 HP / 232 Def / 24 SpD
Bold Nature
- Surf / Scald
- Ice Beam
- Substitute / Trick Room / Flamethrower
- Slack Off

This thing looks amazing in this meta. It's gigantic bulk the physical side, good special bulk, and immunity to Crits, which is something a good amount of the meta relies on, lets it wall a good amount of the meta. It can use both Surf and Scald as options, the former with more power and doesn't remove your freeze hax while the latter removes your freeze hax if you currently have it, the former imo is preferred but if you like the removal of freeze hax the latter works. Ice Beam lets you nutter pretty much anything. Trick Room and Substitute can be used to prevent from being repeatedly flinch haxed because of your low speed, substitute preferred because of its other immunities it grants. Flamethrower could also be used for removing burns if you use surf and to provide extra coverage, but it does make weak to flinch users, so support from Dragonite would be preferable. Slack Off is just for healing.

Rayquaza-Mega @ Sky Plate
Ability: Aerilate
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Fake Out
- ExtremeSpeed
- Thousand Arrows
- Filler (idk, I run Rapid Spin because I don't have a reliable method to remove SR and stuff)

Mega-Rayquaza, without a doubt, is the best Aerilate user out here. In some of the test BH games I played, even Fake Out could destroy at least 50% of a mon's health. This is the set I use, although due to it's 180 in both attacks, it could just as easily become a SpA mon with Boomburst/Judgement. Sure, this mon's typing isn't the best, getting crushed instantly by Kyu-B, but overall, Game Freak gave us an extremely fun Aerilate mon to use, both physically and specially.

pidgeot @ pidgeonite (lel pidgeot confirmed pidgeon)
Ability: Big Pecks
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Nature: Timid
- Hurricane/Oblivion wing/Heat Wave/
- Shell Smash/Heat wave/Defog/Roost
- Boomburst
- Sing/Heat wave/Defog/Roost

behold our savior new bird to play with. sadly pidgeot STILL has problems with steel types and rock types...but alas, its still a very threatening poke to many teams. basically, pidgeot is the strongest boomburst normal type user all items aside. but unlike most users, pidgeot has a nifty way to snag a free smash boost and that is sing. more specifically Noguard Sing. hurricane is for powerfull alternate stab, however oblivion CAN be used instead for some much needed healing (but with a smash on its belt, its not like it will be living many hits to begin with) smash is for MUCH needed boosting, which will turn pidgeot from weak bird to a powerful and fearful threat. however, one can run heat wave or defog for coverage or hazard removal respectively. Boomburst is just rediculously op a powerful stab option, and there is really no need to use any other move over it. sing is to get problematic pokemon asleep and to assist you in setting up for a sweep so even if you cant setup due to rock types, you can also go though a substitute so that may come in handy. however, you can run defog, heat wave or roost in this slot, if you allready have a pokemon that can put something to sleep allready.
Those slashes are all sorts of messy. To be honest, I think the set should be like Hurricane / Boomburst / Heat Wave / Roost. You can use Oblivion Wing, but if you're going to use something with No Guard, might as well go nuts with it. Shell Smash over Roost seems fine too, but I wouldn't use it as a Defogger (or spinner because it gets that too).

Stabmons
Metagross-Mega @ Metagrossite
Ability: Tough Claws
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Gear Grind
- Earthquake/Thunderpunch
- Zen Headbutt/Ice Punch
- Shift Gear

ORAS introduces a new shift gear player to Stabmons, and it has a more versatile set of options then Scizor. It can run Tough Claws boosted Punches to hit potential switch ins such as Skarm, Heatran, and Lando-T hard making it more difficult to check. Its high bulk will make it very tough to kill but it still has some tough weakness to work around. V-create, Sucker Punch, and Thousand Arrows/EQ, are fairly common moves it holds weakness to. But unless your opponent holds the proper checks Mega Metagross has the potential to sweep whole teams.

Steelix in tandem with Hippowdon/Tyranitar sounds good in stabmons
Steelix @ Steelixite
Gear Grind/Gyro Ball
Thousand Arrows/Precipice Blades/Earthquake(in case ban)
Diamond Storm
Curse/Shift Gear(if you like setting up multiple times and having Sticky web support)/Thousand Waves

A Trick Room team in AAA also sounds interesting
Steelix @ Steelixite
Sand Stream
Gyro Ball
Earthquake
Rock Slide/Stone Edge
Filler

Although realistically Baton Pass Marathon is probably best with TR
Steelix @ Steelixite
Gyro Ball
Earthquake
Stone Edge/Rock Slide
Sandstorm

Hopefully you give it Curse and Wish Support too.

You can use Oblivion Wing, but if you're going to use something with No Guard, might as well go nuts with it. Shell Smash over Roost seems fine too, but I wouldn't use it as a Defogger (or spinner because it gets that too).
yeah, you make some good points. i will fix it, except i might keep sing slashed in, but i will slash it after roost and shell smash, since looking at mine, it DOES look really messy, plus sing allows you to abuse noguard while using oblivion wing as stab/recovery.

also as for defog, i mainly slashed it since offensive defoggers in ou are pretty good, (mainly lati@s) however, due to sr weakness, and general weakness of not having proper recovery when you need coverage, i will take your advice on that and just cut defog.

fwiw, sing + shell smash sounds fun too. if I were to run that, I'd probably use it alongside hurricane + heat wave.

>mfw no Bullet Punch
Bullet Punch is an inferior option on a pokemon that is going to have 2+ speed and access to good coverage moves that can make some of its counters/checks fear switching and and since it doesn't ohko sableye it just isn't worth running. It could be run to beat Whimsicott but gear grind can break its sub then KO easily.

Balanced Hackmons

Kyogre-P @ Choice Specs or Choice Scarf
Ability: Primordial Sea
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Sp A. / 252 Spe
Timid or Modest
- Water Spout
- Earth Power / Thunder / Hurricane / Moonblast
- Trick / Above coverage
- Recover / Volt Switch / Above coverage

It's Gen V Drizzle Palkia all over again! Earth Power is mostly for Desolate Lands Groudon-P who, ironically, will also enjoy its default ability in BH, while likely still hitting other potential Desolate Land users, such as Scizor-M or Aegislash-S, hard. Thunder lets Kyo hit opposing Water-types if you're not worried about Strong Sun while Hurricane lets it hit Grass-types if Venusaur-M and Sceptile-M seem like they may be problems for you. Moonblast is there is you're more worried about dragons, particularly Palkia. Meanwhile, Trick is as dickish as ever against stuff that might otherwise wall you.

Imposters might be problematic, so choose your partners carefully. For example, Sceptile-M with Sceptilite would (in theory) scoff at Imposters getting hold of the Spout / Thunder / Trick set due to being 4x resistant to both attacks and immune to Trick.

Sceptile-M @ Lum Berry or Leftovers or Life Orb
Ability: Contrary
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Sp A. / 252 Spe
Timid or Modest
- Leaf Storm
- Draco Meteor
- V-Create
- Spore

Just what Balanced Hackmons needs, another dual-STABed Contrary abuser. And this time, we have one that's fast as heck and is naturally immune to Spore! Sceptile-M has the distinction of being the only good Contrary user with STAB on Leaf Storm, with its next closest competitor being... Celibi. Considering Kyogre-P and Diancie-M are now things, this will probably be very handy. Just watch out for Imposters. (Sap Sipper Diance-M would make for a great Imposter check, in theory at least).

Ability: Solid Rock(for sheer force)
EVs 4 HP/252 Att/252 SpA

One of my main contributions to the BH metagame has been weird Protean sets, so here's another:

Mega Sceptile @ Spooky Plate
Ability: Protean
EVs: 40 Def / 252 SpA / 216 Spe with a Timid Nature
- Judgment
- King's Shield
- Moonblast
- Infestation / other move

So I haven't been able to use this yet, but I'm really looking forward to it. Basically, Mega Sceptile's speed gives it the ability to outpace +Speed Mega Mewtwo Y, Mega Mewtwo X, and Mega Gengar with only 216 speed EVs and a Timid nature. So with the power of Protean Spooky Plate Judgment, it can outspeed and KO all of these things with ease. Obviously, Mega Sceptile is really vulnerable to -ate priority. King's Shield helps this a bit, and I also added the extra 40 EVs to Defense. Moonblast hits a lot of common -ate users, like the Kyurems, Rayquaza, and Yveltal, and provides near-perfect coverage with Judgment. It also hits Mega Sceptile without its type change, so if you come in and predict a Chansey switch, you can use it. Infestation beats Shedinja and also allows you to trap Imposters, which is very useful under certain circumstances (though you can't take an Imposter on too well, unlike my MMY set.) You may worry about being trapped yourself, but using Judgment makes you Ghost-type for a turn, allowing you to escape trapping, something the Imposter, which has Normal Judgment, cannot do. Then you can switch to any Steel-type to wall the Impostered version of this set.

Ultimately, it might be too frail to succeed in an -ate-dominated meta. However, with team support, I think it might work well.
