FAQ:
1. What are the Double Elimination Cups?
The Double Elimination Cups are doubled elimination tournaments with every participant playing at least 2 rounds, with losing once meaning dropping from teh winner bracket to loser bracket, and losing twice meaning elimination from the tournament entirely. Winner bracket will play every second week, while loser bracket will play every single week. Each round will be a best of 3 of the single given generation of the cup (one of ADV, DPP, BW, XY, SM, SS) where players may change teams between games. These double elimination tournaments are held once for each old generation.
2. What is Doubles Classic & Vintage?
Doubles Classic & Vintage are double elimination tournaments that function similarly to the Cups for each generation, with there being winner and loser brackets which losing once means dropping down between and losing twice means elimination from the tournament. However, instead of each round being a best of 3 of only one generation, Classic & Vintage will be a best of three combined of three different generations. Classic will be played in SS, SM, & XY, while Vintage will be played in BW, DPP, & ADV.
3. What are Doubles Premier League and Doubles Derby?
Doubles Premier League (DPL) and Doubles Derby are doubles team tournaments featuring old generations, which can be used to qualify for the Doubles OldGens Invitationals, with there being two slots for DPL and one slot for Derby. This is decided by a points system for oldgens games played; with a win awarding a player +3 points, and a loss providing -2 points, with playoffs games counting. Tiebreakers, when applicable, will be done with a Bo5 before the tournament similar to how regular tiebreakers work.
4. What is the Doubles Oldgens Invitationals?
The Doubles Oldgen Invitationals will be an invite-only single elimination tournament with 16 players qualifying by either winning a tournament, being one of the best performers in Doubles Premier League or Doubles Derby, or doubles oldgens circuit points. Each round of this tournament will be a best of 5 played in DOU of all the combined older generations, with each generation only able to be played once. The method for determining tiers played for each matchup is taken from Grand Slam:
To determine the tiers played, players will have 24 hours after matchups goes up to send the host a ranking of all 6 tier preferences from most preferred to least preferred. The higher seed's two most preferred tiers, the lower seed's two most preferred, still unpicked tiers, and the higher seed's preferred pick amongst the last two tiers will determine the tier lineup for the set, which will be announced as soon as possible in this thread so players can prepare. If a player does not submit their tier preferences before the deadline then their list from the previous round will be used, or their opponent's top 5 tiers will be used if there is no previous list.
The purpose of this is to (1) decide all tiers quickly, allowing players to prep 5 teams instead of 6, and (2) try to balance tier selection so that the advantage of either seed is as small as possible, and leans towards the high seed. We believe this selection system achieves that by letting the high seed have the ultimate call over which tier to strike out, but giving lower seeds the ability to lock their preferred tiers before that happens (as opposed to past tier selection systems that simply gave high seed the ability to strike out a tier, resulting in a fairly big advantage).
The reason why we're asking players to provide a full list of their tier preferences rather than a back and forth where the higher seed sends their first two picks, then the lower seed, then the higher seed selects their final choice is so that we can get the list of tiers to both players as soon as possible, rather than having to deal with communication delays caused by each player needing to wait for their opponent to get back to the hosts.
