Old Generation 2v2 Doubles Megathread
This thread serves as both a repository for oldgen 2v2 resources and a secondary hub for their discussion.
FAQ:
Q: Where are these metagames playable? A: At current, they are only able to be played in ROM, but there's a chance they could also be challengable on the main server.
Q: Where do I go to discuss the current generation? A: There's a thread in the OM forum.
SM/ORAS Thoughts after week 3 of 2v2PL4 (These are my opinions don't cancel me why is everyone trying to cancel me its just an opinion stop trying to cancel me for having an opinion)
Breakout Performers so far: Blastoise
Toise is absolutely cooking people up w mega and non-mega. It's proven itself as the best follow me user in the tier and also a top borderline 10 pokemon as a mega alone in SM and ORAS
Victini
Victini in both gens is absolutely electric (and fire and psychic), White Herb is a crazy evolution that gives Vic so much more juice on both ends of the court. It might be losing a decent number of games in sm but its still a demon to deal with in builder/preview
Cresselia
Cresselia is a MENACE this tour, it's incredibly hard to kill, its got the utility you want it to have, and you can't necessarily just leave it alone, definitely a resurgence of utility pokemon this tour
ELECTABUZZ AND MAGMAR???
Oh my goodness fucking gracious WHO LET THEM COOK?????????? These are genuinely the #2 and #3 redirectors in both tiers, and can even be more versatile than Mr. Blas "Your Moves Follow Me and X are Incompatible" Toise. Their bulk is fantastic and Static/Flame Body are unbelievably useful tools for just completely robbing games. I genuinely don't think I can treat them as jokes anymore. Ebuzz is slightly better in SM than in ORAS and Magmar is slightly better in ORAS than SM IMO.
Disappointing Sad Sacks Kyurem-Black
KyuB is kinda just getting it handed to him so far this tour, it's not winning games, it looks really bad almost every time. It's getting to the point where that pokemon is comically exploitable
Mega Venusaur
Mega Venusaur cannot catch a break this mon keeps LOSING. please stop running charm or whatever this mon has 2 move sets and they're only 1 move different. I still think this is probably a top 3 mon in SM im ngl
Pokemon Who Are Doing Very Well Just As We Expected Them To:
Mega Metagross
Mega Metagross is on a tear this tour in SM and ORAS remaining as THE mon to beat and still coming out on top way more often than not in the end
Pokemon who I had to tell "Please go home you're scaring the Hoes":
Tapu Koko
Fun Fact: Every series of SM that has involved at least 1 player bringing Koko was won by the player that brought Koko fewer times
this mon is irredeemable in my eyes. It doesn't do anything it's a fraud A+ rank that deserves B tops. It's the worst electric type you can be using, it's the worst fairy type you can be using, it's the worst sky dropper you can be using. Role Compression can only go so far when you're dealing with a bad starting point
Sad i sold in semis, but ill post my teams and some thoughts from the tour. Dont take them seriously i didnt play much of one tier tbf https://pokepast.es/9353642380cba465 I also built a lot of old gens for the squad but not gonna post those
Bw first: B -> B+ sky drop is a very nice and its faster than everything non scarfed A -> A+ in all my bw... i have one. one. one victini, and its fire gem so idk i havent even thought about it generally. But yeah like 3 or 4 sets and they are all incredible, can basically slot in on any team.
I generally didnt use any low tier mons either but c- -> c+ nice utility, can be good sometimes but not really
Oras, played it like once and i sucked
Staring at the vr tho i see was used... once so far in pools and it lost, idk, just seems bad every team i tried to work with it it failed so... S- -> A.... maybe
SM, also didnt play much but koko sucks just use zera nerd A+ -> B+
Also A+ -> s- icy wind + other stuff and its just an annoying threat to deal with and account for
Obviously the meta is extremely centralized, I've kind of grown to appreciate the power dynamics at play since the start of the 2v2pl but I still would not call it "good". I think banning Liepard/Aero for unhealthiness would be a positive change (can elaborate more if this picks up any steam).
The lack of Landorus usage (brought 0 times all tour!!) was a big shock to me. There are a lot of little quirks of BW that do hurt it's [theoretical] viability. Choice scarf users, particularly kyub, are generally a lot more runnable here than in other gens and nape being a top tier fake out user is really awkward for it. With that being said, landorus is like a fundamentally solid 2v2 mon in my eyes and its surely at least on a similar level to Thundurus-T.
Conk just has insane stats w/ gem and seems strong into a lot of anti-meta stuff that gets run.
Trick room is honestly really bad in this gen. The setters face a ton of trouble and BW gems are so cracked that fast threats can usually do more than excess damage anyway. Aerodactyls existence is also just backbreaking.
ORAS:
I don't really feel like I'm putting out a hot take when I say Mawile fell off atp. Every viable oras team will a fire type that makes positioning with it really difficult but the rise of blastoise as a main redirector (and even magmar as an alt pick) has been a death sentence. It's still great with support but theres a lot of lower commitment megas.
Mega Diancie feels really sleeper rn. Its true that Mmeta is so cracked that even with like victini+blastoise it's hard to feel like you have a truly secure line into it without a fire mega. It's also extremely exploitable by feint/setup/speed control since pretty much any Diancie line without turn 1 protect is kinda just unclickable. Even acknowledging those pain points though, its extremely potent into toge+fire cores and is capable of beating its threats with redirect support. I'm holding off on calling it a top tier because of the Multigen Rise of Blastoise but I think it's one of the more conspicous threats in the meta.
SM:
Zeraora is so obviously ahead of everything else in my eyes. Its a massive threat itself but it also passively supports any setup mons next it just by virtue of 143 speed fake out and/or taunt.
Kartana vr rank is just a travesty. It's very generally strong and tailwind means it's always giving some value even when its not directly threatening.
I could see a case for Blaziken-Mega being S in sm since it's one of the few pokemon that can actually take advantage of Zeraora and usually can create a pretty solvable opening.
I think I rate Zygarde unusually high compared to other people which I honestly don't really understand. It's extremely hard to stop if it gets free turns from fake out/redirect/intim and also has the bulk to not be fully reliant on support. Espeed is guaranteed value and 2hkos most things at +1 with lorb. It's obviously very flexible and techable but, honestly, it's impossible to go wrong with tarrows/espeed/tect/dd lorb.
