Welcome to the 2024 RarelyUsed Circuit Playoffs! This is what the entire year's RarelyUsed tournament circuit has led up to. After struggling through the year's many different versions of the RU metagame, we finally have our 16 playoff contestants. The winner of this tournament will receive the 2024 RarelyUsed ribbon as a reward for their hard work and accomplishments this year!

Congratulations to you all for accomplishing this, and good luck in the playoffs!

Specific Rules:
  • This is a standard SV RU tournament.
  • This tournament will be SINGLE Elimination.
  • Rounds 1 and 2 will be Best of 3; the semifinals and finals will be Best of 5.
  • Any tier changes that occur during a round will not be in effect until the following round.
  • Changing teams between games is allowed.
  • Matches are to be played on Pokemon Showdown; you must play on either Smogtours or the main server.
  • Replays are mandatory for each game you play! I recommend playing on Smogtours so that they are automatically saved. DO NOT HIDE YOUR REPLAYS.
  • Species Clause: A player cannot have two Pokemon with the same PokeDex number on their team.
  • Sleep Clause: You cannot inflict sleep upon more than one member of the opposing team.
  • Evasion Clause: The moves Double Team and Minimize are banned.
  • OHKO Clause: The moves Horn Drill, Guillotine, Sheer Cold, and Fissure are banned.
  • Endless Battle Clause: Anything capable of intentionally creating an endless battle is banned, draws will be enforced after 1000 turns.

  • Identity: I expect many battles to be completed under alts. This can be bad for tournament security, and thus I will make this clear: If I hear any whispers of identity theft (battling as someone you are not) or proxy battling (helping someone else battle through pm) I will not be pleased and I will take severe actions.
  • Scouting: Next, I do not want to hear anything about counterteaming, at all. Do not complain about it. I also don't want to hear about any blatant scouting. There is a difference between "[user] is known for using stall" and "let me follow [user] around all day to watch all his battles since I am his opponent". I expect a lot of the former and none of the latter. I give permission to all battlers to ask any person spectating their battle to leave if they do not want them watching. Everyone will have access to your replays from earlier rounds though.
  • Timer Clause: As for taking long between moves, if your opponent asks you to hurry up, please oblige. If you are doing a damage calc for a key turn that is one thing, but prolonging every move is suspicious and annoying. Don't do it. Furthermore, Battle Timeout is a rule for a reason. If you run out of time, you lose, simple as that. It does not matter what your opponent says. Do not battle if you think you will have to leave mid battle, and instead reschedule for a better time.
  • Disconnections: Finally, in the case of a disconnect, the decision is in the hands of the player who did not disconnect. The options are: redo the battle move for move, redo the battle with the same teams but different moves, or redo the battle with completely different teams. If the battle was without a doubt over, they may also take the win. Any suspicion that a disconnect was committed on purpose to redo a match may be appealed to me, and if I feel this happened there will be severe consequences, don't do it.

TheFranklin vs Elfuseon: Probably the most lopsided matchup in this bracket, TheFranklin is just fundamentally solid in the builder and in-game while Elfuseon is pretty one-dimensional with offensive structures. 60/40
feen vs Feliburn: Pretty close matchup, Feliburn is coming out of SCL while feen had a monster Winter Seasonal that was miles ahead of his next best performance this year. I think this comes down to motivation, as Feliburn relied on Ajna and Master Chief a bit through SCL and feen is a grinder. 48/52
eifo vs Tsuki: I think this is the funnest matchup this week, eifo who is meticulous and calculated and uses all of his timer vs Tsuki who will click with reckless abandon and may never get the timer notification. I think Tsuki has had some exceptional showings lately while eifo was focused on PU for SCL, though I don't think you should ever discount him. 48/52
entrocefalo vs Xiri: Honestly this could be a coinflip, both players are really solid clickers but I don't know who either is getting support from for building. 51/49
C0nfiden1 0yster vs hjkhj: I think this can be a good series if you're interested in more methodical gameplay, as both of these players are fundamentally sound builders and skew towards fatter structures. I think hjk has more of a diverse pool to draw from though as he's not afraid to load cheese like HO or Grassy Terrain stuff, so I favor him a tad. 45/55
Ming549 vs EviGaro: Ming builds some devious rng-hopeful stuff and I think that kind of stuff works insanely well vs EviGaro. I do think, in a balance v balance world, Evi is favored in the builder and as a player, but Ming has that protagonist "my TWaves will land and I will get 60% full paras" kind of energy lately. 55/45
Guille vs Cielau: Guille is just absolutely cracked, winning Seasonal and Cup back to back the way he did. Cielau is no slouch, but Guille is arguably the favorite to win this whole thing given how hot he's been. 70/30
Master Chief vs Metallica126: My most hyped matchup this round for sure, two incredibly solid builders and players who can load literally anything on a whim. I think MC should be favored just because Metallica is busy carrying literally the entire Chinese playerbase in every tour on Smogon.com, but regardless this is likely the best set we'll see this round and either player could win the whole thing. 51/49
