Week 3 Interview and Poll Results

We had a lot of close calls this week. SMB is an outlier, completely dominating this week's poll and even winning the last week's poll. Can the player make a hat-trick? We shall see. The team with the most Derby Points is the Agnes Tachyon Cutters! Plenty of players are getting their fair share of spotlight and more are to come. If there are any questions you would like me to ask the Week 4 winners or the community in general, then feel free to message me on Smogon or Discord. Let's keep things interesting!

1. Let’s talk about your match. Were there any key moments that stood out to you?

i think i got a really good matchup with the glimmora and the spectrier in the back. i mainly just needed to keep applying pressure with the tspikes down and survive the diancie assault. coming from a singles background, im proud that i found the late game snarl win condition, because thats not very intuitive to me.

2. What Pokemon, core, or archetype is doing well in your respective format?
i think the people who dont think torn is the best mon rn are kinda delusional, there are almost no teams where it cant fit. instant tailwind is way too good to pass on, and it applies so much more pressure than rillaboom or incin or whatever.

3. Is there any format you would like to see created? (We’ll see if the community agrees.)
i hate oms so not really

4. What is mish? Why mish?
mish is a guy and a meme. probably related. chicken or egg situation

1. Let’s talk about your match. Were there any key moments that stood out to you?

I think there were 3 pretty key moments in the game, two of which worked in my favor and one definitely didn’t.
  • The first big moment was on turn 1 where Heatran was able to get a full power Eruption off onto Fini and Kangaskhan thanks to tera ghost blocking Kangaskhan’s Fake Out. Fini was a hard wall for Dracovish and Kang was also virtually impossible for my team to ohko outside of a Fishious Rend so the chip was much appreciated.
  • The second was a bit later in the game, where my Tornadus ends up staring down laptop’s Tornadus. I decide to attack his Tornadus with my own and delay setting up Tailwind by a turn, however laptops went for the same play, and his Tornadus was faster than mine and KOed me. This turned a favorable positon into a pretty dicey one for me.
  • However, I was able to get Tyranitar + Dracovish in position, and actually delayed Mega Evolving my Tyranitar for a few turns to get a second bout of Sand Rush for Dracovish that ended up winning me the game by KOing Laptops’s Tapu Fini.
2. What Pokemon, core, or archetype is doing well in your respective format?
National Dex has a ton of options and we’ve been seeing that throughout the tournament. I’m not sure if this is a hot take but I believe Mega Gardevoir is currently the best Mega in the tier, it’s easy to build around and fairly hard to counterteam fully. Of course there’s also Gothitelle running around, but hopefully that will be banned by this weekend. I think Tapu Koko is really overrated.

3. Is there any format you would like to see created? (We’ll see if the community agrees.)
Honestly we’ve already got so many formats and I enjoy most of them so I’m quite content with what’s currently on offer. Maybe a bring 6 pick 4 format similar to VGC that is tiered through the normal tiering process could be fun.

4. What is mish? Why mish?
I think mish is painfully unfunny.

1. Let’s talk about your match. Were there any key moments that stood out to you?
yeah there were really 2 key points,
A: when I missed the high horsepower on the Entei, which allowed my Tinkaton to get burned by sacred fire. At the time, I was assuming the Garganacl was Tera Ghost, so if Tinkaton didn’t get burned, I don’t think my opponent could beat Tinkaton at +2, as Gigaton Hammer and knock off would beat Tera ghost Garganacl.
B. When it turned out to be Tera water Garg. I had been saving my Heatran specifically to be a strong special attacker in the back, since I knew my opponent’s team was built around setting up Garganacl. I was actually mad at myself on preview, because I normally bring some sort of tech for these types of set up win cons, but in this game I hadn’t. So I felt that some combo of knocking off the Garg to limit leftovers healing plus Heatran would be my only chance, but once I was it was Tera Water Garganacl, I knew that Tera Grass Tera Blast combined with grassy terrain would be enough.

2. What Pokemon, core, or archetype is doing well in your respective format?
I think there’s been a couple, Moltres-Galar has done really well, as has Brute Bonnet. The format is still relatively underdeveloped, so there’s plenty of room for new Pokemon and strategies to emerge.

3. Is there any format you would like to see created? (We’ll see if the community agrees.)
Idk about “created”, but I do wish people were more open to Doubles Ubers, as I think theres a lot of potential there seeing as it has a pretty active ladder and is a fun tier to boot. For some reason people think it’s too centralized, which I’m not really sure is true, it’s about the same centralized as DOU. I think some people just view Dubers as the “noob tier” because a lot of newer players when they come onto Showdown do want to use their favorite cover legend… but that doesn’t mean the tier doesn’t have merits.

1. Let’s talk about your match. Were there any key moments that stood out to you?
Hey! So the main standout moment of this match for me was a possible turning point when my Torchic came in under tailwind to pick up a double kill with heat wave alongside Mudbray. Landing here was crucial and would have given me a lot of momentum, but missing made the endgame more difficult, and the game absolutely would have been over if my opponent had targeted my Torchic.

2. What Pokemon, core, or archetype is doing well in your respective format?
The optimal DLC core right now is 'MVM' - Misdreavus, Vullaby, Mudbray. These 3 have amazing synergy. Calm mind Stantler + Foongus is also a solid pick but I don't think it's even close to MVM. Torchic is looking great into the meta right now because some of the best brings only have a single fire resist, or no fire resist at all (Eragon is the goat for being the first person I saw to use this Mon).

3. Is there any format you would like to see created? (We’ll see if the community agrees.)
Doubles LC UU would be cool! Would be nice to see what a meta without the staple Mons (Beyond even just the most broken Mons) would look like.

hey, thanks for setting this up.
it was offense v offense so game was mostly straightforward tbh. Ig turn 10 when kegged missed muddy water made the endgame more interesting since kingdra didn't take LO recoil and now has 2 more muddy water chances + rain is back up

2. What Pokemon, core, or archetype is doing well in your respective format?
idk if i can point to any specific thing, so far ppl have been using very different teams with success. me personally i think rain is really good and underused, and is the thing i prep against the most with my teams

hi
Arcanine avoiding the set up of cm suicune and curse snorlax in game 1 with roar, avoiding those set ups was a big part of what won me that game since the positioning wasn't the best

2. What Pokemon, core, or archetype is doing well in your respective format?
In general any special set up (calm mind) I would say is the strongest, if you look at the games many have been decided for that, dragon dance is easier to stop by intimidate but for calm mind you have to have other kind of checks which in general are harder to make fit

3. Is there any format you would like to see created? (We’ll see if the community agrees.)
It is not a format but draft team tour

4. What is mish? Why mish?
It's like nuag but placing your fingers one key further to the right. Nuag nuag.
Thanks Arcticblast for the first question. You stated the correct answer was Pichu. However, the community seems to side along with Fangame10 on this one. This Pokemon is a "Stupid annoying thing from that electric* gym in Black/White". I honestly surprised with the second question's result. I came across a Lord of the Ring reference on internet and thought that would be a cool answer choice. Apparently not :( The most popular answer choice was "You can't rush perfection."
