Welcome to the Fourteenth iteration of the NU Open, hosted by goldmason!

Tournament Rules:
  • General tournament rules and regulations can be found here.
  • Grand Slam rules can be found here.
  • Standard SV NU.
  • Best-of-three, single elimination.
  • Battles should take place on Smogtours!
  • SV cartridge win conditions are in place; there are no ties.
  • Tiers are locked at the beginning of each round.
Identity

About playing on alts: It is entirely allowed to play on an alt other than your own main forum name, though if your opponent wishes to confirm your identity, you must log on to your main alt to show them you are who you claim to be. This is to prevent people from pretending to be who they're not.

About playing on different servers: Tournament matches must be played on the Smogtours server. The Main PS! server is also acceptable if both parties agree to that. Other servers are not sanctioned by the TD team and playing in them might result in your game not counting. Protect yourself from that by playing in Smogtours, where we also have the power to recreate games that end due to DC's.
Scouting

On scouting opponents: Going through your opponents replays of tournament and ladder games is entirely allowed, as long as a game is public there is nothing preventing you from watching it. An exception to this is abusing powers granted to you by being staff on Smogon or PS! to gain access to information a normal user wouldn't have access to, which is strictly forbidden.

On leaking teams: Divulging private information about someone's planned team to their opponent is never allowed, and will be heavily sanctioned. Requesting that such information be divulged is also grounds for punishment. Keep your scouting to publicly available information and you'll be fine.

Timer Clause / Disconnections

On the Timer: The timer must stay on throughout the whole battle, not to be turned off even in the case of a player disconnecting as we now have a separate disconnection timer (more details here). The timer may not be turned off in any circumstance.

On Timeout losses: A player that loses by having all his time run out loses the game. This is only not the case if the player that received the timeout loss can be verified to have suffered a True Disconnection. Rematches in such cases are not allowed.

On True Disconnection: The TD team has a secret threshold of seconds that your timer must be at or above, from the moment you disconnect, for a timeout loss to be considered a True disconnection. If your game is determined to be a true disconnection if you played on Smogtours and contacted a TD before the room expired your game will be recreated up to the point the disconnect happened. It is the responsibility of the player that disconnected to get a TD into the room before it expires.

Battle Clauses:
  • Evasion Clause
  • OHKO Clause
  • Sleep Clause
  • Species Clause
  • Timed Battle
  • Team Preview
General recommendations:
  • Contact your opponent as soon as possible upon the round going up. Activity cases are going to be handled in a very strict manner.
  • When scheduling, offer a wide selection of times when you are available to play. 1 hour of activity on one or two weeknights is unlikely to be considered acceptable.
  • Schedule specifically - do not schedule for "Friday afternoon" or "Sunday morning", pick a date, a time and note the timezone.
  • If I catch news of ghosting or some other sort of atrocious behavior, I reserve the right to investigate to the full limits of my ability in conjunction with the TD team provided there is adequate evidence to warrant it.
That aside, feel free to get back to me (or another tournament director) if you still have any questions regarding this tournament (or Grand Slam in general) after reading this post. Last but not least, aside from points towards qualifying for Grand Slam playoffs, this tournament is part of the NU Tournament Circuit, so points for that will also be awarded accordingly depending on how well you do.

Messy situation for my Round 4 match (everything can be found on my opps wall):
In the beginning my opp said that evening/nights would work but not a single evening worked out in the end. Friday afternoon which they also suggested they were also not online, thus leaving me in a situation without a reply until late Saturday. Then they suggested sunday morning, which they also failed to show up. I was fine getting an extension, as long as the match happens. They suggested Tuesday morning or night, which they can do 100%. We scheduled for morning at first but 6 hours before scheduled time I told them that I cannot make it due to an emergency. They also could not really play at that time since they said that they need to leave 20 minutes after scheduled time. Such a set should not last less than 20 minutes but that's not the important part. Suddenly they cannot play Tueday night, which they originally said they can play 100%. Especially if you consider the fact that they assume that such a set does not last longer than 20 minutes, it's a little weird. They made a very spontaneous offer to play today in a time range of 20 minutes again which I did not see in time. So, long story short, they missed scheduled times multiple times and were not approachable while I missed a scheduled time on tuesday in which I said long ago that I cannot make anymore.

That's why I want to claim an act win

Pro tip: you probably shouldn’t miss the agreed upon time by a few hours if you want to try and act fish your opponent

In regards to the events of yesterday, no I didn’t lie about my activity or “couldn’t really play at that time”. I’ve been on a trip with family and friends so I purposefully designed my day around our game to make sure it could happen. I made lunch plans for an hour and a half after our agreed upon time that had a 20-25 minute commute, meaning if you showed up at :00, 0:15, or even probably :30 which I waited online for, I’d still be able to play the full set and make it. You just didn’t show up. And no, you didn’t tell me it was “because of an emergency”, you said “I might be online a little later cause I'm going to sleep now D:” at 5am. Not just that, you didn’t respond on my wall for nearly 2 hours after our agreed upon time meaning that either 1) you had no intent on being there or 2) had no way to make it regardless of the warning in the middle of the night that bought you a little bit more time. “So, long story short”, your accusation in your post of me missing multiple times when we had one (1) singular scheduled time that you were never going to be at is laughable.

Out of respect for you being accommodating with my admittedly shitty scheduling earlier in the week from this trip/religious holidays that you seem to feel gives you act grounds, I tried to find another time to play based around my packed schedule these two days, but couldn’t find time for a full set despite me literally attempting to move my entire day around to be able to get this game done. And yes mdb, schedules and availability can change because, after we agreed on a time, I had the freedom to plan out my week. Next time, just give me the courtesy of showing up so that I don’t spend time and energy trying to scramble things around last minute in order to try and be polite. Even right now, I’m writing this on mobile while at a family event because I got tagged by a friend with your post.

If having a life is such a smogon crime, feel free to punish me for it hosts. My only mistake here was clearly not calling act in the moment. My bad, won’t happen again. Oh, and I’d like to call act on my opponent now for missing our agreed upon time by 2 hours yesterday, thank you.
