Welcome all to the quarterfinals! In what has now happened twice in a row, the winner of the previous World Cup has been relegated! Did Midwest inherit Spain's curse...? And will this year's winner make it a threepeat in 2026? Notably absent is Europe, which after years of repeated policy review discussions lost a few members to revised eligibility reqs or even to the hosting team. We see US West once again enters playoffs at a top contender for the trophy, including multiple 3-0 showings from TJ, Frito, Fusien, and the combination slot of emforbes and tko. Italy also showed strongly in pools-four 4-0 slots of their own: zS, Kebab mlml, Empo, and Santu. Brazil and Africa put up strong showings of their own with two and three 3-0 slots, respectively, while US Northeast and Chile both narrowly avoided expanding the 4-way tiebreak to earn a spot in quarterfinals. Emerging from one of the tiebreak series, France and India both continue on, whereas US Midwest and Belgium have been relegated after having been subjected to another multi-week round where UU decided to ban a Grass-type starter. In India's second year in playoffs, do they have what it takes to get through quarterfinals and go all the way? Will we see another new team take the trophy for the 6th consecutive year? There's potential for half the bracket to include two new teams going into semifinals if India and Africa both win this round, so, as always, FIGHT FOR YOUR COUNTRY!

East beast

Also, midwest going from champions to getting send to the shadow realm is not something I had on my bingo card this year.

man where do i begin, that guy on chile svou abele01, that guy is the best player ive ever seen touch the game, the intelligence the prep work the decision making everything is top tier. This man single handedly made careers like myself, young zryan74 and purbaj he took us out the slums of smogon and put us onto big better things. My bold take? Chile will win the world cup of pokemon

Assorted SV predicts while I'm at work. Two highlights each.

US West (0) vs. (0) India
SV OU: emforbes vs. MAVERICK SHOOTERS
SV OU: Fusien vs. myjava - Tyrants showdown! myjava's rapidly become one of the more reliable must-win-this-game guys on the site, with the only mega-important loss I can remember being that time he loaded stall. However, Fusien just 3-0ed a strong pool with two wins being rather commanding, and he's the goddamn 21th OST champion. Both of these guys will have some familiarity with each other from their time on the Tyrants; java has a larger sample size of high-pressure team tour games so I'll go with him for now.
SV OU: TJ vs. vk - TJ clearly hasn't lost a step despite spending several years in the can, 3-0ing a tricky pool, but I do think some of those games took a weird route and we haven't seen the best of him yet. vk's trajectory this year has been very cool: I was fairly impressed with how he managed lines in SPL and he's keeping it up here, devising a path to sweep oldspicemike with an Iron Fucking Boulder. His team styles have been diverse and almost always effective, helping him topple two of SV's giants en route to a 3-0, but so too have West's squads - Vert/ima/Attribute is a ridiculous brain trust. I hope we don't get HO vs HO this game.
SV OU: shiloh vs. freezai
SV OU: Attribute vs. Piyu

Italy (0) vs. (0) France
SV OU: Punny vs. Juyen RPPLF - I am fully on board the RPPLF train. This guy is sheist, nobody is putting together these teams and winning with them. I will be tuning in to his games no matter what. Punny got cheesed twice by Ceruledge and subbed out; I don't think this is representative of their overall skill in SV OU, and I'd like to see a good clean game from someone we all know is an excellent player. That said, SV OU isn't necessarily a comfort tier for 'em as far as I know, and it's going to be trickier when your opponent loads multiple UUs every game. Actually, UU is a comfort tier for Punny, maybe it'll be easier...?
SV OU: Kebab mlml vs. Antonazz
SV OU: Niko vs. Patatexv
SV OU: Tricking vs. Hiko - sub in, stall, win, refuse to elaborate. Tricking's blade is obviously still sharp (his OLTs weren't that long ago) but this is his first team tour playing appearance since 2022, and possibly one of his only trophy tour playing appearances since then as well. I couldn't entirely tell you how much he's kept up with SV besides managing its players. Hiko carries momentum from a very good tiebreak win - obviously not put off by the pressure - and has gradually established himself as a high-level SV OU threat. I've bolded Hiko here, but this is incredibly close and Tricking definitely has an x-factor that you should not discount under any conditions.
SV OU: zS vs. Unamed

Brazil (0) vs. (0) Chile
SV OU: Ash KetchumGamer vs. Mako
SV OU: LpZ vs. Lazuli - LpZ's just been winning a lot recently; that Slam trophy mons-is-mons ability seems to translate well across Gen 9. Lazuli is one of Chile's better-known players, think he's a regular presence across subforum PLs and took a win in WCOP quarterfinals last year, now a solid 2-1 this year. Significant upset potential for Lazuli here especially if Chile can cook up something unique for him to pilot. Let's see that Substitute Bolt set again, it'll work this time, trust.
SV OU: Dugtrio Is Broken vs. Mister McLovin
SV OU: elodin vs. azogue
SV OU: Thiago Nunes vs. Abele01 - Abele01 went 1-2 in his pool but that win over clean got my attention, executing a pretty tight game against one of the better players in the tier. This game against Thiago can help me get a better understanding of both of their games: Nunes has historically floated around that SV3-4 area, and I'm looking for one of them to make that next step. Stylistically I don't have a super strong read on either player besides Thiago bringing a handful of Sandy Shocks years ago, so that could also be interesting.

Africa (0) vs. (0) US Northeast
SV OU: Yves Stone vs. lax - heat matchup. Yves Stone plays with mojo and has never been afraid of big names, having to play bea and Vert in his first World Cup. I would not be surprised to see him make some hard-read plays and get an upset here, but it would definitely be an upset against lax. One of WCOP's foremost farmers, lax seems to have a stronger hold on the meta right now and 2-1ed a strong pool (and didn't really get a chance at 3-0ing after a nightmarish full para). The way he puts together his teams right now - respectful of the current landscape, but off by one in a key element - is what I think will give him an edge here. Very excited to see this one.
SV OU: Suzuya vs. blunder - I can't entirely get a read on Suzuya. He's always been just about SCL starter-level, has had a handful of up-and-down tours, and now just 3-0ed a reasonably good pool. Obviously no slouch. His current tour has shown a preference for slightly bulkier structures and I'm wondering how this will match up with blunder's own tendencies - from what I've seen of him in SV he tends towards bulkier squads too when tryharding, and the basedlord has always delivered there. I think this will end up being a longer game that blunder will find comfort in.
SV OU: KeshBa54 vs. Star
SV OU: Silent Waltz vs. bhkg
SV OU: SirPeanutCronch vs. fade
