4th Gen VGC Team

This is going to be the last VGC for 4th gen DS games in my region. The rules are similar except we're only allowed for 1 restricted pokemon in a team of 6.

This team is basically a Trick Room team with only Smeargle and Latias as fast pokemon.

Smeargle @ Choice Scarf (Own Tempo; Jolly)
252 HP; 252 Speed; 4 Def
Dark Void; Fake Out; Protect; Trick

Maxed speed Smeargle with Choice Scarf can even outspeed a maxed speed Mewtwo. The only common pokemon seen that can outspeed this is Scarf Kyogre which possesses a threat to this team. Dark Void cripples almost any Pokemon as there is no sleep clause in VGC. After using Dark Void Smeargle can come in again to Fake Out or Trick its choice Scarf.

Shiftry @ Focus Sash (Early Bird; Brave)
252 HP; 252 Atk; 4 Def (0 Speed IVs)
Sucker Punch; Explosion; Fake Out; Protect

If the opponent does not have a Kyogre/Hitmontop, Shiftry will be paired with Smeargle. Fake Out and Sucker Punch are priority moves. Protect is there as under Trick Room, Bronzong would explode first. With only 80 base speed Shiftry works quite well under Trick Room.

Bronzong @ Occa Berry (Levitate; Relaxed)
252 HP; 252 Atk; 4 Def (0 Speed IVs)
Gyro Ball/Earthquake; Explosion; Trick Room; Protect

Bronzong is a good Trick Roomer and can explode as well. Gyro Ball/Earthquake is there to scout Protect. The other 3 Pokemon (Smeargle, Shiftry, Dialga) it might be paired up with have Protect. Trick Room is there for obvious reasons. I'm not sure about the EV distribution. 252 Attack may be too much for Bronzong.

Dialga @ White Herb (Pressure; Quiet)
252 HP; 252 SpA; 4 Def (0 Speed IVs)
Draco Meteor; Trick Room; Flamethrower; Protect

Dialga has great typing and higher HP than Palkia. Although Palkia resists Kyogre's Water Spout better, I chose Dialga as Dialga has lower speed and can handle other situations better. Draco Meteor is extremely powerful, especially if I find that my opponent doesn't have a metal type on his team. White herb allows Draco Meteor to be fired twice. Flamethrower is to eliminate Metals except Heatran, which is basically non-existent in VGC.

The next 2 Pokemon will replace Shiftry and Bronzong in the case of Topogre.

Toxicroak @ Black Sludge (Dry Skin; Adamant)
252 HP; 252 Atk; 4 Def
Sucker Punch; Fake Out; Low Kick; Protect

Toxicroak's Dry Skin is simply awesome! Its resistant to Water Spout. Sucker Punch deals a lot of damage and has priority. With an Adamant nature and some IVs in speed Toxicroak can outspeed neutral 0/31 Hitmontop. This will pair with Smeargle in the presence of Kyogre.

Latias @ Haban Berry (Levitate; Calm)
252 HP; 252 SpA; 4 Def
Surf; Grass Knot; Draco Meteor; Light Screen

Latias is almost as good Palkia. A Timid Scarfogre can only do 40.7% - 47.8% to Latias with Water Spout. Grass Knot deals a lot of damage of Kyogre while Draco Meteor is devastating. Surf heals Toxicroak while dealing damage to the other 2 opponents.

Light Screen is to stall off Hitmontop when it uses Sucker Punch, at the same time, preventing Kyogre from causing much damage. Toxicroak will be able to Fake Out Kyogre for 1 turn. The next turn Latias can Draco Meteor Abomasnow or another Lati@s if it switches out. If Kyogre stays in the result will be the same. Latias will be able to resist Sucker Punch and Blizzard before it attacks. Toxicroak can use Low Kick (In case it switches out) and finish it.

The opponent's team will be shown. It's played on Pokemon Battle Revolution. So it'll be 6 pick 4 style. Anyway I don't think Toxicroak/Latias can stop Kyogre/Hitmontop. Blizzard + Sucker Punch kills Latias. Unless I give Latias Light Screen instead of Recover.

Black Sludge is honestly garbage. I'd rather have Life Orb and dish more damage. VGC is hyper offense, as epitomized by the team you're scared of most, TopOgre. I don't see how Toxicroak replacing Shiftry will help in your dealings of TopOgre. First turn you get to Fake Out that Ogre, but Top will probably Fake Out Smeargle, leaving that point moot.

And your Smeargle set might as well just be:

-Dark Void
-Sketch

Scarf Smeargle's one of the worst mons to be running in this format in my opinion. The point of Smeargle in 10, unlike 09, was versatility. It is not going to come back in and even get to trick something away. Straight up this team is going to get wrecked by TopOgre.

In my opinion, the best counter to TopOgre in this format is definitely an appliance Rotom with a slow, bulky Groudon. You get the sun up, immune to Fake Out, and wreck with a powerful STAB Discharge. Hitmontop is not really going to be able to do anything to either leads. Also, Bronzong, without a doubt is the worst Trick Roomer in this format, losing its job to Cressellia. Cressellia is much bulkier, and while you can't explode, you have options to set up screens or give a little Helping Hand. Groudon also works much better with Shiftry. Since only one Uber is allowed, I can predict a lot of Kyogre or Dialga. Groudon will beat both.

There are better partners to Groudon than appliance Rotom. Now that the dust has settled on the world championship stage, I can safely say the best counter to TopOgre is TR Cresselia. It can do anything Rotom-A can do, only it has much more bulk, an instant recovery move backed up by sunlight, Helping Hand and, of course, Trick Room.
