6 Megas, 1 Team
This team started off as a bit of a joke with my brother. Mega-evolutions were new and we wanted to see how people would react if we put 6 pokemon that could mege-evolve on the same team. Surprisingly, this team turned out really well and (after a few edits) managed to climb higher on the Pokemon Showdown ladder than I was ever able to the last two generations.
But just keep in mind that when you suggest pokemon, try to only suggest pokemon with viable Mega-evolutions. Even if you don't make them Mega, I really want to keep with the flavor of the team.
The Team
In-depth Analyses
(Just note that to stick with the team's theme all the pokemon are nicknamed "Mega-POKEMON" just for kicks.)
Mega-Aggron (Aggron) @ Custap Berry
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 HP / 4 SDef
Adamant Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Head Smash
- Thunder Wave
This guy is usually my lead. His set is based on Custap Berry Skarmory of the last generation. Usually I'll start off with Stealth Rocks and then, once knocked down to my last HP thanks to Sturdy, go for an attacking move (usually Head Smash). I didn't pick Rock Head since, as a lead, Stealth Rocks are my primary priority. Thunder Wave also helps cripple a key player of the opponent's team before the battle even gets started. Head Smash hits for ludicrous damage (Aggron can sometimes take a pokemon down with it). Earthquake eats Aegislash and co. for breakfast.
The combination of Custap Berry + Sturdy is really what makes this set work. Aggron's work is considered amazing when I get rocks up and take down an opponent's lead. Since most defoggers are Flying-typed Rock Head will OHKO them and thanks to priority they can't remove the rocks.
Mega-Scizor (Scizor) (F) @ Choice Band
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 Atk / 248 HP / 6 Speed
Adamant Nature
- Bullet Punch
- U-turn
- Pursuit
- Brick Break
The most recent change to the team, Scizor was swapped in for Kangaskan. While Scrappy Kangaskan was a good pokemon, once his mega-evolution was banned, I couldn't keep him on the team (it didn't fit with the team's flavor). Scizor serves to dent as many pokemon on the opponent's team as possible. This set is a standard Choice Band set. Bullet Punch and U-turn serve to do tons of damage and Pursuit is there to trap Alakazam and Gardevoir if I think they'll switch.
Mega-Ampharos (Ampharos) @ Choice Specs
Ability: Static
EVs: 252 SAtk / 252 HP / 4 SDef
Modest Nature
- Focus Blast
- Thunderbolt
-Dragon Pulse Volt Switch
- Hidden Power [Ice]
Here is Scizor's special twin. Like Scizor, Ampharos tries to hit as many things as hard as possible. Choice Specs really help with that, as does max Special Attack. Ampharos isn't going to be outrunning anything so I put 252 HP EVs in to help it tank hits. Focus Blast is for coverage. Gliscor used to be a problem (I don't see him anymore for some reason...) so HP Ice helped. It also nails Garchomp on the switch-in so that's nice. The only move I never use is Dragon Pulse but I don't know what to switch it with. Thanks to Torkoals I tested out Volt Switch and I liked how it helped create a Volt-turn combination with Scizor. Ampharos with Choice Specs hits hard enough that often the power drop from Thunder Bolt to Volt Switch is negligible.
Honestly, Ampharos gets a lot of kills that I would never have expected. I guess people always think it's going to Mega-Evolve and try to switch in their (supposed) check.
Mega-Lucario (Lucario-Mega) @ Lucarionite
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 Atk / 4 HP
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- Earthquake
- Crunch
- Extreme Speed
Here's the real star of the show and the true mega. This guy usually comes in late and serves to clean up the team once walls (and Aegislash) are gone. Its stats are mind-boggling and it usually kills anything with prior damage. Extreme Speed's +2 priority really help against Talonflame. Everything else is standard. By the time I wheel Lucario out, I guess people have seen enough pokemon that they don't know for sure if he's mega or not. This is really helpful when they try to scare me out with Gengar or some other pokemon.
The moveset is mostly standard with Crunch used to kill Gengar. Close Combat does a ton of damage and is my main sweeping move. Since Lucario's increased speed doesn't apply the turn I mega-evolve him, one of the things I do to guarantee his safety is mega-evolve him the turn his revenge kills with Extreme Speed. That way I hit with his higer attacka nd the speed change is offset.
Mega-Alakazam (Alakazam) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 SAtk / 4 HP
Modest Nature
- Psychic
- Focus Blast
- Shadow Ball
- Dazzling Gleam
Alakazam is my primary revenge-killer. Thanks to Magic Guard, Alakazam can rely on its sash to allow it to kill a rampaging Mega-Lucario or Mega-Alakazam. It hits hard with amazing coverage. Dazzling Gleam wreaks Dragon types like Goodra. I try to not bring Alakazam out unless I need him since he's really frail and I don't want to break his sash prematurely. The only move I'm not too sure about is Psychic over Psyshock. I really like Psychic's higher base power and I haven't run into too many special walls, but you never know.
Mega-Garchomp (Garchomp) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 Atk / 4 HP
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Outrage
- Earthquake
- Poison Jab
Garchomp primarily acts as either a late-game cleaner, coming in after Lucario is done, or an early game attacker. For the late game I carry Swords Dance in case I can set up a sweep. When I first started using this team, Lucario would sometimes go down to priority and I'd finish his sweep with Garchomp. The Focus Sash allows Garchomp to either get the +2 or function as clutch revenge killer if he's needed. Poison Jab allows me to nab fairies on the switch-in (looking at you Mega-Gardevoir) that think that they can take an Outrage. However, it doesn't do as much damage as I'd like (at +0 usually 60-70%, not enough for a nice OHKO).
Past Members
(Mega-Kangaskhan) Kangaskhan @ Life Orb
Ability: Scrappy
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 Atk / 4 HP
Adamant Nature
- Fake Out
- Sucker Punch
- Earthquake
- Return
By far, Kangaskhan is the most-missed pokemon on my team. His primary function was to take out rampaging sweepers with a combination of Fake Out and Sucker Punch. He would always also mislead people into thinking that he was my Mega-evolution. Sadly, when he was banished to the Ubers I had to switch him out for Scizor.
Mega-Absol (Absol) @ Scope Lens
Ability: Super Luck
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spd / 4 HP
Jolly Nature
-Night Slash
-Psycho Cut
-Stone Edge
-Mega Horn
This guy was my original lead. Thanks to the new Crit mechanics I could get a Critical Hit on every attack. Of course, once I realized I wanted to be serious with my team, I decided that Absol's damage wasn't cutting it, even with the Critical Hits. After him I tried Scarf-Heracross and lastly settled into Aggron.
Contributions
Thanks to Torkoal for suggesting to use Volt Switch on Ampharos.
Closing Remarks
So this concludes my first Gen-VI RMT on a team that I never though would do as well as it has done. Please don't hesitate to rate, critique, and rip apart this team. Just be sure to stick to the team of all members having potential mega-evolutions.
