THE TEAM

hippowdon.gif

Hippowdon @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 52 Def / 200 SpD
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Slack Off
- Rock Slide

My lead Pokemon is Hippowdon and its role in my team is a Weather/Setter. It also has a lot of bulk which allows it to fill the position of defensive wall. It can also take a Draco Meteor and then Slack Off. I need it on my team because I have Sand Rush Excadrill. Stealth Rock lets me set up hazards while I run Rock Slide do deal with any flying type Pokemon after Zeraora is dead. Rocky Helmet allows Hippowdon to do damage to Pokemon that are physical attackers that resist EQ and Rock Slide.

excadrill.gif

Excadrill @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Rush
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Swords Dance
- Iron Head
- Rapid Spin

My second Pokemon is Sand Rush Excadrill. I use this as my Speed/Wallbreaker because Sand Rush gives it 2x speed in sand and I run a SD + EQ + RS Set because all teams need a spinner, and when outside of sand, it can get a speed boost with RS. I run Swords Dance because a +1 Earthquake Excadrill can do somewhere around 50% to a Ferrothorn, which makes it a wallbreaker. Leftovers allows Excadrill to slowly regain health while dealing heavy damage.

toxapex.gif

Toxapex
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Baneful Bunker
- Recover
- Scald
- Haze

I use Toxapex as another wall. I use the basic Toxapex set with Haze to plow through set-up sweepers which are a huge threat to my team. I have no item on Toxapex due to Belly Drum Azumarill being a huge threat to my team. Having no item allows it to stay up for one hit but it's a guarantee 2HKO. Baneful Bunker allows me to poison any physical attackers and get that small chip damage on them.

volcarona.gif

Volcarona @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Quiver Dance
- Fiery Dance
- Psychic
- Giga Drain

Volcarona is another sweeper on my team and it fulfills the role of Special Sweeper. Since I have Excadrill and Zeraora for physical attacks, I need a special sweeper, to OHKO Pokemon like Ferrothorn, which are generally hard to take out. I run a basic Volcarona set with QD, Fiery Dance, Giga Drain, and Psychic. If I swap into something that's weak to Volcarona, like Ferrothorn, they will most likely swap out to not get OHKO'd which gives me a free Quiver Dance. That QD will allow be to deal heavy damage and OHKO a few Pokemon while also outspeeding them. Heavy-Duty Boots prevents Volcarona from taking hazard damage, which stacks up over time.

zeraora.gif

Zeraora @ Life Orb
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Plasma Fists
- Knock Off
- Close Combat
- Volt Switch

Zeraora fulfills the Speed role on my team with a massive 423 Speed stat, which outspeeds other incredibly fast Pokemon, such as Dragapult and Barraskewda. I use Knock Off in order to kill Dragapult because Zeraora outspeeds Dragapult if it doesn't have any stat boosts. Close Combat allows me to deal with annoying Special Walls, namely Blissey but also Single-Strike Urshifu. Volt Switch allows me to use Zeraora not only as a Speed Pokemon, but also as a Pivot. I use Life Orb just to boost my attacks since I have a Jolly Nature, not Adamant.

mandibuzz.gif

Mandibuzz (F) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Overcoat
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Foul Play
- Roost
- Defog
- U-turn

Mandibuzz is my final Pokemon, because, well Mandibuzz. (That would kind of explain everything you need to know, but this RMT would get locked, so Imma go into a bit more detail. Mandibuzz walls almost everything except its weaknesses, but it can take a Rock Slide from SS Urshifu, which only did 22%-26% in a battle. I have Defog in case Excadrill is dead. U-turn can be used in place of Volt Switch if Zeraora is weak to the opposing Pokemon. Heavy-Duty Boots makes sure Mandibuzz doesn't take damage from Hazards, especially Stealth Rocks, which do a decent amount to due Mandibuzz's Flying typing.

Conclusion
I played with this team a lot and the highest I got to 1250. I just wanted some feedback on this team because it was the best one that I made that got me so high (not at all) on the ladder. It's kind of a balance team that has good synergy (I think) and relatively good typing.

Heya! Cool team there. I really like how it looks as a base.

Let me do some corrections:

I really think we don't need Rocky Helmet when the Hippo is specially defensive in the first place. It's meant to tank things like Volcarona which give your team a huge threat so I decided to maximize it's special defense. Defensive didn't look reasonable on this team since there's a Mandibuzz + Pex core already to take down Urshifus.

Hippowdon @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Slack Off
- Rock Slide

Next change I made was changing Zeraora's item with Boots to minimize rocks damage and frequently chip opposing mons/knock out their items.
Made the nature adamant because I don't really feel the need to do Jolly nowadays since people run Adamant Dragapult these days. You could do Jolly if you like.

Zeraora @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Plasma Fists
- Knock Off
- Close Combat
- Volt Switch

Next what I did was change the EVs of your Mandibuzz with the ones in Smogon. I think they are much better than running max defense. If I remember correctly, non Life-orb Clefable 2HKOs you with Moonblast if you use this spread.

Mandibuzz @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Overcoat
EVs: 248 HP / 160 Def / 44 SpD / 56 Spe
Impish Nature
- Foul Play
- Roost
- Defog
- U-turn

Then I decided to change Baneful Bunker with Knock Off. Being able to knock opposing choice bands and items is really good I think than poisoning them. And also because Unseen Fist goes through Baneful Bunker so that sorta sucks.

Toxapex
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Knock Off
- Recover
- Scald
- Haze

Here's your team: https://pokepast.es/6bed3e2a9a375db5

Glhf laddering! Let me know how it goes :)

Hey, here to rate your team

Firstly I'd just like to say welcome to Smogon! For a first team this is really good, and I actually quite like this team. I don't think you will have any issues climbing further with a bit of experience. However, there are some small changes I'd suggest that are worth considering.

I think Crawdaunt is very threatening against this team. It's able to set up on Hippowdon and Toxapex and it can revenge kill Excadrill and Volcarona with its powerful Aqua Jet. I think an easy fix to this is run 56 Spe EVs on Mandibuzz. Nailing Crawdaunt with a U-turn or Foul Play (if its already at +2) should help a lot against it. I feel this team is primarily a balance team so I feel Heavy-Duty Boots on Zeraora is the better option. If you're worried about the loss of power, Adamant nature is a viable option. Speaking on natures, Timid is a must have on offensive Volcarona to outspeed Scarf Hydreigon, Jolly Urshifu, and Sand Rush Excadrill at +2. Lastly, I think Leftovers is better on Hippowdon since it's sponging more special attacks anyway. You could possibly run Toxic or Whirlwind over Rock Slide since I don't think you're too weak to Volcarona, but its a minimal change.

Hope these comments were helpful! Any questions you have feel free to ask, best of luck :psysly:

So I found out that I was seriously struggling with Sableye in Gen 8 OU while laddering. Is there anything I can change about my team to help with that?

Kind of. Volcarona was dead and all I could do with Mandibuzz was spam Foul Play and he used Will-o-Wisp and statused my entire team. Then he spams Recover and then I'm out of Foul Play. Also, is there any way for me to counter Rain Teams? Seismitoad is one thing that sweeps my team after Volcarona is dead. Maybe I could swap out Mandibuzz for something that resists Ground-type moves like Tangrowth? Tangrowth is very bulky and with something like Rocky Helmet to cripple physical attackers, I think it would go well. I've also seen a really good Choice Specs set.

I think the best thing you can do about rain is to abuse your own weather and play carefully with your Zeraora and Toxapex.
