hey everyone, recently i played a best of 7 against XxSevagxX in gen 7 bh. he's a long-time bh player and since gen 8 has started he's really started to get good at both gen 8 and gen 7. i wanted to share how the games went from my perspective and reviving the lost art of warstories has been a long held goal of mine so here it is!!!!!

XxSevagxX's team:
Gengar-Mega / Mewtwo-Mega-X / Kyogre-Primal / Dialga / Chansey / Zygarde-Complete
cityscapes's team:
Kyogre-Primal / Steelix-Mega / Giratina / Mewtwo-Mega-Y / Tapu Lele / Arceus-*
☆cityscapes: hf
☆XxSevagxX: hf
from preview, this doesn't look like an easy matchup. this team focuses mainly on poisoning imposter with mmy's tspikes, and this tends to fall apart vs a bulkier gar + imposter build such as this one (gar is obviously limited offensively but is hard to remove). as a result, the use for lele and mmy here will be severely limited; i can see gira and ogre actually putting in more work here. lures are also pretty much off the table with this team so that's kind of annoying.
he's almost definitely leading with imposter here cause it looks super free vs my team (in the case of trapper ogre/steelix you obviously have defensive options and still get information out of it). i'm gonna lead with arceus to stop him from really accomplishing anything productive.
Battle started between XxSevagxX and cityscapes!
XxSevagxX sent out Chansey!
Go! Arceus (Arceus-Fire)!
[Arceus is Normal type.]
[The opposing Chansey's Imposter]
The opposing Chansey transformed into Arceus-Fire!
this looks like a good time to activate the orb on gira. it's gonna be super important in this game, and finding opportunities to activate the orb looks pretty annoying vs him, with ogre/mmx often carrying knock and me not being able to come in on dialga/gar period. having a screen would be nice but gar and mmx feel super nonthreatening at this stage of the game.
Turn 1
Arceus, come back!
Go! Giratina!
XxSevagxX withdrew Chansey!
XxSevagxX sent out Mewtwo (Mewtwo-Mega-X)!
The opposing Mewtwo was badly poisoned!
Giratina was badly poisoned!
ph mmx is revealed, so i don't have to bother with reflect arceus for something like banded mmx later on. ogre looks very solid here because i have a solid chance of landing purify vs him at some point. as for the play here, hard ogre seems best; it takes care of both the likely plays (switching and hazards).
Turn 2
XxSevagxX withdrew Mewtwo!
XxSevagxX sent out Dialga!
Giratina, come back!
Go! Kyogre (Kyogre-Primal)!
he goes hard dialga vs my gira, meaning he's likely regenvest trying to come in on a stab and pivot out. other sets such as bounce to dissuade my hazards are also a possibility, but i don't want to miss the initiative vs a really annoying mon like this one. i want to knock its vest as soon as possible.
Turn 3
The opposing Dialga used Doom Desire!
The opposing Dialga chose Doom Desire as its destiny!
Kyogre used Knock Off!
(The opposing Dialga lost 15% of its health!)
turns out to be offensive doom desire with steelium. obviously ogre isn't doing anything vs it, and it's in a position to pose a threat here. luckily i have regenvest steelix as a pretty solid answer that can switch into this and threaten back with ground stab.
Turn 4
Kyogre, come back!
Go! Steelix (Steelix-Mega)!
The opposing Dialga used Tail Glow!
The opposing Dialga's Sp. Atk rose drastically!
lens steelium might kill me here? all i can really do is just hope i made the right call switching into this. arceus mightve been the better play.
Turn 5
The opposing Dialga used Core Enforcer!
It's not very effective...

thankfully, i live the initial hit and smack him for 73 with brave pblades. shoutouts to regenvest steelix. i consider going to lele here to limit this to 0 kills, but he's almost certainly clicking steelium here to guarantee the kill on someone. maybe i can try to get cheeky with ogre berry activation but really doesn't seem worth it considering i'm giving him opportunities to come in later. i think i'll just stay in here.
Turn 6

The opposing Dialga unleashes its full-force Z-Move!

Steelix fainted!
Go! Mewtwo (Mewtwo-Mega-Y)!
[Mewtwo's Teravolt]
Mewtwo is radiating a bursting aura!

5-6

in retrospect, sacking lix wasn't great considering it was actually a pretty strong mon here, putting even more pressure on imposter and offensively threatening everyone on the opposing team. arceus mightve been a better pick although lunar dance is very nice here.
after i went to mmy i realized how bad of a set this was in general, if you can't kill gar that's never a good sign. even against a 12% dialga i didn't feel good clicking moves. if i miss here or he switches out, it's horrible.
Turn 7
Mewtwo used Bolt Strike!
It's not very effective...
(The opposing Dialga lost 12% of its health!)
Mewtwo lost some of its HP!
The opposing Dialga fainted!

The opposing Chansey transformed into Mewtwo-Mega-Y!
[The opposing Chansey's Teravolt]
The opposing Chansey is radiating a bursting aura!

5-5

luckily teravolt actually works in my favor here because he's scared of spikes so he lets dialga die. great to have that threat out of the way so ogre/gira are much less restricted. imposter being in here is really bad though. i can't trade tspikes here because gar will get an opportunity to come in, plus i don't have hazard removal so my strat of getting nonpoisoned lele/mmy in vs imposter is just not gonna happen. better to get some sort of initiative here, i'm gonna go lele and see how things go.
Turn 8
Mewtwo, come back!
Go! Tapu Lele!
The opposing Chansey used Toxic Spikes!
Poison spikes were scattered on the ground all around your team!
as expected, tspikes go up. he loses imposter as an immediate lele answer, so i get to do damage to ogre and see what set it is.
Turn 9
XxSevagxX withdrew Chansey!
XxSevagxX sent out Kyogre (Kyogre-Primal)!
Tapu Lele used Psystrike!
(The opposing Kyogre lost 43% of its health!)
no ph no fc, probably regenvest or bounce. if it's bounce i definitely want to press my advantage here, he's recovering and i might not get a second opportunity where ogre is forced to switch in, so i'm gonna go for qd here.
Turn 10
Tapu Lele used Quiver Dance!
Tapu Lele's Sp. Atk rose!
Tapu Lele's Sp. Def rose!

The opposing Kyogre went back to XxSevagxX!
XxSevagxX sent out Chansey!
[The opposing Chansey's Imposter]
The opposing Chansey transformed into Tapu Lele!
ogre is almost definitely regenvest, and imposter comes in at +1 with tspikes on my side. not good at all. i figure he'll try to convert the advantage immediately with moonblast, so i'm gonna click moonblast myself here.
Turn 11
The opposing Chansey used Quiver Dance!
The opposing Chansey's Sp. Atk rose!
The opposing Chansey's Sp. Def rose!
The opposing Chansey's Speed rose!
Tapu Lele used Moonblast!
(The opposing Chansey lost 8% of its health!)
The opposing Chansey's Sp. Atk fell!
he actually did qd here, but i got lucky with my moonblast spa drop. i realize just how scary qd is in this spot; it almost guarantees a kill seeing how i don't have steelix around and arceus is severely limited due to tspikes. better to go arc to prevent that threat.

TOWER OF POWER has arrived. imposter is no longer a threat for now; light screen just shuts it down super hard even if he clicks quiver dance again. gira can just come in at that point and threaten spectral. arc is losing a lot of hp here though, this is obviously unsustainable.
Turn 13

pretty risk free spectral. the only threat to this he might have would be core/entrain zyg, which he probably would've brought in earlier if he had it. guessing zyg is some prank variant because his team is lacking it.

ogre takes a fat 30 on the switch, negating regen. he can core here which is annoying, but i feel like i don't really have a choice other than to just hit it again. this team is not flexible at all.

imposter switches in (probably expecting sap). this is terrifying, i win if it dies but i lose if it gets the opportunity to sap. obviously one answer is sitting right in front of me (the speed tie) but i want insurance. going hard ogre to block the immediate sap.

rough prediction to miss. ogre dies to psystrike from this range and i basically have to risk the speed tie.

light screen is obviously unfeasible cause i can get sapped and die. my plan is to lunar dance so lele can withstand whatever it takes to keep spamming moonblasts and hopefully beat imposter to autowin.
Turn 52
Soul Dew Latias: I would have chanced the Lele speed tie personally.
☆cityscapes: yeah im not quite sure about this play too

during the game i thought that was a big mistake and i autolost if he qd'd there, but looking at it from here i'm really not sure. gira came in and clicked spectral on sap, then taunt, and then he was forced out. although he did get a good amount of hp back, he was still not safe from lele at all and i'm pretty sure he was in moonblast range after another round of spikes. definitely not the best of lines especially without ogre, but i thought it was still pretty cool.
Turn 53

fun fact, there's this weird line where i might have actually lost to sunsteel mmx cause he has last mon zyg. gira is forced into clicking spectral to kill mmx and he can encore that for the 9 more pp it has to make me run into helmet and take waves damage. it all gets super messy and i didn't have to deal with it if i went gira instead of staying in. as it is though i'm fine here.

pretty simple matter from here. even if lele dies here to thousand waves into encore on sap, zyg doesn't have the jump on me so i can just click taunt instantly, denying any opportunities to encore and stalling him out of waves pp forcing him to struggle. bh is great.

☆XxSevagxX: gg

XxSevagxX forfeited.
cityscapes won the battle!
overall, i think that this was a really cool game. a lot of the time these new teams just completely flop and lose unceremoniously, and this one would've too if i hadn't found just the right lines to a precise victory. it was really fun maneuvering the weird defensive game where both sides managed to get completely owned by lele. it did get a bit weird near the end, but that's pokemon.
XxSevagxX's team:
Gengar-Mega / Mewtwo-Mega-X / Kyogre-Primal / Dialga / Chansey / Zygarde-Complete
cityscapes's team:
Kyogre-Primal / Steelix-Mega / Giratina / Mewtwo-Mega-Y / Tapu Lele / Arceus-*
this is one of the new teams i made. the basic idea is you have mmy + lele stacked with tspikes to pressure imposter, the main hurdle for both of these pokemon. ogre lix gira is a classic defensive core. arc is added here cause i needed an mmy check + ghost resist. since i didnt have a prank, i opted for the TOWER OF POWER. this set is amazing cause it's a prank user that actually supports the team against wallbreakers. vs someone like kartana you can just have reflect up the whole game so they can't do anything. lunar dance is chosen over recover here because we have a Win Condition(TM) in lele.

(The opposing Dialga lost 73% of its health!)
Steelix took the Doom Desire attack!
It's not very effective...
(Steelix lost 54% of its health!)

thankfully, i live the initial hit and smack him for 73 with brave pblades. shoutouts to regenvest steelix. i consider going to lele here to limit this to 0 kills, but he's almost certainly clicking steelium here to guarantee the kill on someone. maybe i can try to get cheeky with ogre berry activation but really doesn't seem worth it considering i'm giving him opportunities to come in later. i think i'll just stay in here.
Turn 6
Soul Dew Latias joined
The opposing Dialga surrounded itself with its Z-Power!
The opposing Dialga unleashes its full-force Z-Move!

Steelix fainted!
Go! Mewtwo (Mewtwo-Mega-Y)!
[Mewtwo's Teravolt]
Mewtwo is radiating a bursting aura!

in retrospect, sacking lix wasn't great considering it was actually a pretty strong mon here, putting even more pressure on imposter and offensively threatening everyone on the opposing team. arceus mightve been a better pick although lunar dance is very nice here.
after i went to mmy i realized how bad of a set this was in general, if you can't kill gar that's never a good sign. even against a 12% dialga i didn't feel good clicking moves. if i miss here or he switches out, it's horrible.
Turn 7
Mewtwo used Bolt Strike!
It's not very effective...
(The opposing Dialga lost 12% of its health!)
Mewtwo lost some of its HP!
The opposing Dialga fainted!
XxSevagxX sent out Chansey!
[The opposing Chansey's Imposter]
The opposing Chansey transformed into Mewtwo-Mega-Y!
[The opposing Chansey's Teravolt]
The opposing Chansey is radiating a bursting aura!

luckily teravolt actually works in my favor here because he's scared of spikes so he lets dialga die. great to have that threat out of the way so ogre/gira are much less restricted. imposter being in here is really bad though. i can't trade tspikes here because gar will get an opportunity to come in, plus i don't have hazard removal so my strat of getting nonpoisoned lele/mmy in vs imposter is just not gonna happen. better to get some sort of initiative here, i'm gonna go lele and see how things go.
Turn 10

[tspikes]

TOWER OF POWER has arrived. imposter is no longer a threat for now; light screen just shuts it down super hard even if he clicks quiver dance again. gira can just come in at that point and threaten spectral. arc is losing a lot of hp here though, this is obviously unsustainable.
Turn 13
Arceus used Light Screen!
Light Screen made your team stronger against special moves!
The opposing Chansey used Moonblast!
(Arceus lost 20% of its health!)
Arceus was hurt by poison!
[tspikes, light screen 8 turns]

at least it can come in on a switch, better than nothing. still pretty dire though. gira is safe though, imposter is only at +1 so unless he crits through light screen i can recover everything off.

Go! Giratina!
The opposing Chansey used Moonblast!
It's super effective!
(Giratina lost 38% of its health!)
[Giratina's Poison Heal]
Giratina had its HP restored.
pretty risk free spectral. the only threat to this he might have would be core/entrain zyg, which he probably would've brought in earlier if he had it. guessing zyg is some prank variant because his team is lacking it.

luckily he doesn't core (idk if he has it) and i also crit him for quite a bit of damage. this is a pretty good spot. imposter comes in but doesn't really threaten any big damage, gira is fairly weak and has great defenses. i'm gonna sap him so i can just sit here.

Giratina used Strength Sap!
The opposing Chansey's Attack fell!

he wins the speed tie, so i get all my hp back. good stuff. mewtwo feels really horrible here, so i think i'll just go to it-- having it vs opposing imposter that can't kill it on the switch is probably its best way of forcing progress in this game.

that's huge. i can't take advantage of this a ton because my tspikes user is dead, but that's a pretty big threat just removed from the game. gira looks super strong at this point. imposter being in is disastrous, as always, but at least gira is at full hp so i can cover the qd option safely.

nice damage on imposter aka the only mon that can stop lele from winning. zyg hasn't come in all game which leads me to assume it is indeed some prank set that can't do anything here. obviously i need to go ogre here in order to block sap.

the berry is eaten, removing any chance for a lure but also allowing me to switch out freely, although this isn't super applicable with imposter in here. he's staying in to recover, so i'm gonna stay in to knock. simple.
in retrospect, going to gira instead of scalding that turn would've been huge. denying imposter recovery yet again mightve led to it getting massively pressured and even dying altogether or leading to mons like ogre getting sacked. that said, this isn't the worst situation in the world.

this is why having chansey's eviolite gone + spikes are so nice here. half its hp gone on 1 switchin. this looks super winnable from here, lele has a very real chance of muscling through. obviously the play is ogre to block sap, although it does open me up to hard mmx into hard imposter to recover with ogre.

no burn, but a very nice crit. ogre cannot stay in here, period. this feels like a 50/50 between scald/hard gira and zyg/imposter, i choose to go for scald because it has a better reward table (having imposter burned is obviously awesome)

ogre comes back to get more hp. it looks pretty nonthreatening here although spin could be a pain. great opportunity to go hard gira, uturn into imposter isn't free cause of spikes, he can't core me cause spectral kills from this range, and i don't want to give his imposter opportunities to recover.

The opposing Zygarde was hurt by its burn!
encore here is pretty annoying and forces me out (he can stay in indefinitely and pp stall me out of spectrals). i really don't like the idea of going ogre here, so i figure the move is to go lele and try to make things happen.
Turn 48
Giratina, come back!

zmove here looks solid because he can't really lose any of his mons except for mmx. if ogre goes down, then my ogre goes crazy, clicks purify, and removes zyg's helmet so that's just getting overwhelmed. if zyg dies, gira wins on the spot. and i feel safe against the imposter revenge kill, i can sack lele to poison (or go hard arc on qd) and bring in arc to set light screen like before.

imposter switches in (probably expecting sap). this is terrifying, i win if it dies but i lose if it gets the opportunity to sap. obviously one answer is sitting right in front of me (the speed tie) but i want insurance. going hard ogre to block the immediate sap.
Turn 50
Tapu Lele, come back!

Kyogre was hurt by the spikes!

rough prediction to miss. ogre dies to psystrike from this range and i basically have to risk the speed tie.

light screen is obviously unfeasible cause i can get sapped and die. my plan is to lunar dance so lele can withstand whatever it takes to keep spamming moonblasts and hopefully beat imposter to autowin.
Turn 52
Soul Dew Latias: I would have chanced the Lele speed tie personally.
☆cityscapes: yeah im not quite sure about this play too

Tapu Lele was hurt by the spikes!

during the game i thought that was a big mistake and i autolost if he qd'd there, but looking at it from here i'm really not sure. gira came in and clicked spectral on sap, then taunt, and then he was forced out. although he did get a good amount of hp back, he was still not safe from lele at all and i'm pretty sure he was in moonblast range after another round of spikes. definitely not the best of lines especially without ogre, but i thought it was still pretty cool.
Turn 53

XxSevagxX sent out Zygarde (Zygarde-Complete)!
The opposing Zygarde was hurt by the spikes!

fun fact, there's this weird line where i might have actually lost to sunsteel mmx cause he has last mon zyg. gira is forced into clicking spectral to kill mmx and he can encore that for the 9 more pp it has to make me run into helmet and take waves damage. it all gets super messy and i didn't have to deal with it if i went gira instead of staying in. as it is though i'm fine here.

Tapu Lele used Moonblast!

pretty simple matter from here. even if lele dies here to thousand waves into encore on sap, zyg doesn't have the jump on me so i can just click taunt instantly, denying any opportunities to encore and stalling him out of waves pp forcing him to struggle. bh is great.
Turn 57

cityscapes won the battle!
overall, i think that this was a really cool game. a lot of the time these new teams just completely flop and lose unceremoniously, and this one would've too if i hadn't found just the right lines to a precise victory. it was really fun maneuvering the weird defensive game where both sides managed to get completely owned by lele. it did get a bit weird near the end, but that's pokemon.

my immediate thought entering this battle is "i hope this isn't sun", but sun does seem unlikely here because offensive venu on sun simply doesn't work and gar on sun doesn't make any sense. outside of that, not sure what to expect, this is definitely a new team and can be taken one of several ways. it does look annoying though because i'm up against 3 water resists and a xern counter (venu) so making progress might be rough, i'm a fan of yveltal here though cause hurricanes will hurt and av on gyara can be knocked by ogre.
Battle started between cityscapes and XxSevagxX!
Go! Giratina!
XxSevagxX sent out 12 pc. Bucket Meal (Blaziken-Mega)!
i figured blaziken would lead here cause none of my guys outspeed it (except arc) so it makes sense that he'd want the free kill here. gira isn't super valuable here and can get rocks as a bonus.

from the damage on gira i can be pretty sure that this is cb lens blaziken, about what i was expecting.
ph gyara. this is gonna get really ugly, i don't want to let this spin at all cause someone else might be bounce and i think hazards are really important here. at the same time leaving gira in is just a recipe for disaster and leaves me open to burning recover pp, getting statused, letting up spikes, and other bad things. yveltal looks like the best switchin here.
Turn 2

shield takes him out of 2hko range. i'm debating staying in to try again, but at this point it doesn't seem worth it at all. in retrospect though i did have baton pass which was really a much better play (if he spectrals he still loses to entrain).

shaymin is in, retaining tempo on gyara and setting up the rain as well. entrain and knot both look solid here but i like entrain better as it also has utility vs expected switchins such as gira and blaziken. getting parad is annoying but as shaymin it's not terrible compared to w other mons.
Turn 7

Shaymin used Entrainment!

rly not sure why he stayed in here but not a bad trade at all. losing 8 turn rain isnt ideal but thunder/hurricane are still def usable and i'm not planning to lean super hard into the water stab this game. meanwhile gyara is low and forced to switch out. i'm gonna go to ogre predicting blaziken here.
Turn 8
XxSevagxX withdrew Large Beverage!
XxSevagxX sent out Crispy Colonol Box (Giratina)!
Shaymin, come back!

lagging tail indicates prob prank on gira. good for xern. venu is in, i don't like this mon at all cause it counters xern. knock isnt safe cause he can anchor me potentially. best to just get damage on this.

[rain 3 turns]
78%, par vs.

not good at all. sludge heals him up and i can't count on the same 53 roll again due to nuzzle weakening water spout. in general i'm severely lacking on punishes for this mon. going gira to set rocks again isn't even that good cause it lets gyara come in again, i feel like i'm out of options here. need to let yveltal take nuzzle even though it's otherwise super good here.
Turn 11
Kyogre, come back!

cress is in. really not sure why he went to this or what it does. in retrospect again i shouldve bp'd here instead of hard switching, plus xern was prob better than arc to go to here. no chance he clicks knock or nuzzle vs this. rain stopping also sucks cause it means blaziken can actually come in here.

this one really came down to the wire as well. unfortunately his solid water resists prevented me from really showing off the team, but luckily this isn't a team that needs fancy play in order to be effective thanks to the solid backbone. this game was super interesting to me because i felt super disadvantaged throughout the game, but in practice his really passive mons left him lacking options as well. fascinating matchup and really cool game.
cityscapes's team:
Xerneas / Kyogre-Primal / Arceus-* / Shaymin / Giratina / Yveltal
XxSevagxX's team:
Blaziken-Mega / Venusaur-Mega / Cresselia / Giratina / Gengar-Mega / Gyarados-Mega
https://pokepast.es/62622e9bff80f4af semirain is super cool, it's rain but you have a strong defensive backbone and many attacking options other than spamming water moves (which doesn't work with pdon around). here we have 3 attacks xern with thunder and hurricane yveltal which are incredibly cool sets that take advantage of the rain.
☆XxSevagxX: you too
my immediate thought entering this battle is "i hope this isn't sun", but sun does seem unlikely here because offensive venu on sun simply doesn't work and gar on sun doesn't make any sense. outside of that, not sure what to expect, this is definitely a new team and can be taken one of several ways. it does look annoying though because i'm up against 3 water resists and a xern counter (venu) so making progress might be rough, i'm a fan of yveltal here though cause hurricanes will hurt and av on gyara can be knocked by ogre.

z parting shot, definitely came out of nowhere. i could spam recover here but i really don't like the endgame scenario after that, gar will get more opportunities to come in vs xern which i hate. better to try and kill it now while he's pressured to be aggressive.

this one really came down to the wire as well. unfortunately his solid water resists prevented me from really showing off the team, but luckily this isn't a team that needs fancy play in order to be effective thanks to the solid backbone. this game was super interesting to me because i felt super disadvantaged throughout the game, but in practice his really passive mons left him lacking options as well. fascinating matchup and really cool game.
