Hey guys! This my first post ever! I am brand new to Smogon and the pokemon game at large. My brother bought me Heartgold last year and I really loved it. This is sort of a variant of the team I used in that game. I just recently started playing BW. The competitive metagame side is very new to me so I know that there are probably a lot of flaws in this team. I have had some success on Pokemon Online but that may be primarily because I'm still in low rated battles. Thanks guys for taking the time to review my team.

Basic Strategy

Essentially what I've done with this team is create duos of pokemon that work great with one another.

I don't really have a designated opener to this team. Typically my sub-punching Poliwrath starts me off. The main reason I've started doing this is beause a focus punch will bust up most early hazard entry pokemon.
I also love the ability to switch out with a sub in play because it's pretty common for someone to bring in an electric type to break my sub and try to take me out. The reason I love this is because, I can usually predict a switch into my Electivire for the Motor Drive speed boost. Electivire's speed boost makes him a great punisher. My ice punch has ruined many a Flygon on a mispredicted electric move by my opponent :D Thus Poliwrath and Electivire make a great team.

My other "offensive duo" is Typhlosion and Vileplume. Specs Typhlosion with sunny day is FANTASTIC! Vileplume, with his chlorophyll boost in the sun, also becomes a huge offensive threat with a solar beam attack.

My last two Pokemon Are my two team defensive Walls. Togekiss for special and umbreon for regular defense.

Electivire (F) @ Life Orb
Trait: Motor Drive
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Naive Nature (+Spd, -SDef)
- Cross Chop
- Earthquake
- Ice Punch
- ThunderPunch

Electivire is a monster! I supplied him with life orb rather than a choice scarf/band because I really love that flexibility that life orb gives me. With a predicted electric attack from my opponent my electivire gets all the speed he needs to wreck shop. I find that Electivire is great for taking down flygon on a predicted switch with ice punch.

Poliwrath (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Water Absorb
EVs: 160 HP / 252 Atk / 96 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Substitute
- Focus Punch
- Scald
- Bulk Up

Poliwrath's focus punch is no joke. He and electivire work great with one another. I find that Poliwrath has the perfect amount of bulk to take psychic attacks with no problem. When I sub, most of my opponents immediately assume I'll go for a bulk up or a focus punch so they bring in an electric type to break it. I find it is a perfect strategy to then switch electivire in and get the motor drive speed boost.

Togekiss (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Hustle
EVs: 252 HP / 56 Def / 200 SDef
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Thunder Wave
- Air Slash
- Roost
- Aura Sphere

I like Togekiss a lot but he is the pokemon that concerns me the most. I feel thee are probably better defensive walls to try. I've considered maybe an eviolite dusclops or something along those lines. I believe this pokemon probably gives me the most trouble.

157.gif

Typhlosion (F) @ Choice Specs
Trait: Blaze
EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Eruption
- Focus Blast
- Hidden Power [Rock]
- Fire Blast

Typhlosion is a great late-game sweeper in my opinion. With a sunny day and choice specs his Eruption can 2HKO even most resisted hits. He makes a perfect team with Vileplume

197.gif

Umbreon (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Synchronize
EVs: 252 HP / 184 Def / 72 SDef
Careful Nature (+SDef, -SAtk)
- Wish
- Payback
- Heal Bell
- Toxic

Umbreon is one of my favorite pokemon. I felt I needed a good wish healing pokemon with heal bell. Vileplume and Electivire both have life orb so I felt a wish was strong combination. Toxic comes in handy for a good old fashioned stall war.

045.gif

Vileplume (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Chlorophyll
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Sunny Day
- SolarBeam
- Sludge Bomb
- Hidden Power [Ground]

I think Vileplume is often overlooked offensive pokemon. Typically, he is used for sleep powder and his healthy defensive stats. Once Vileplume sets up a sunny day he and typhlosion can both go to work. Vileplume's speed boost with chlorophyll is admirable and catches quite a few opponents off guard.

I'm new to pokemon so I'm sorry if my lingo is not great. I hope you guys can offer me some great advice :) Thanks for taking the time to read and study my team.

Hey, welcome to the forum!

I have a few things to say about this team. First off, you want to run Scarf Typhlosion to make it a deadly revenge killer and probably use HP Grass>HP Rock. For Poliwrath, I suggest you use an all-out offensive set with Sub/Bulk Up/Focus Punch/Waterfall. Lastly, you need a "lead" since this is quite the balanced team. Hope this helps!

Thanks! I'll apply that change to Typhlosion. When you talked about making a purely offensive Poliwrath, what did you mean? Do mean that I should invest all the IV's in Speed? I have 252 in Atk currently. and the other 252 mixed in spd and HP

I would just like to say that I personally have used eviolite dusclops many times and I love it! I usually run this:
Dusclops M @ eviolite
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP, 192 Def, 64 SpD
Nature: sassy (+SpD, -Spd)
- Will O wisp
- Toxic
- Brick break
- night shade
Most people usually run seismic toss but I just like brick break for some reason. :P I will o wisp physical attackers for the halved attack and I toxic walls and Pokes just in general. Night shade is the primary attacking move but I also use brick break when its super effective.
Honestly I've never tried Umbreon & Dusclops but I'm sure it would work well because dusclops covers Umbreons fighting weakness while Umbreon covers Dusclops ghost weakness, however you would lose resistance to the many moves like fire, grass, rock, etc.
Slowbro is also a good option because Slowbro & Umbreon cover each others weakness and you get a few more type resistances.

- This is my first post on the forums in a long time and I'm not that good of a battler but I figured I would give you some input. Good luck on your team!

Hello and welcome to Smogon! :) You have a pretty cool team here! However, I think I have some suggestions that could help you out.

Just so you are aware, Electivire is generally outclassed by most other Electric-types. Have you considered trying Zapdos? Both Vileplume and Poliwrath are weak to Flying. Zapdos, thanks to his great typing, can take other birds head on! He also has plenty of bulk to help him take hits and has great coverage on top of that! There are many sets you can try to fit your team's needs. Here are two that I find the most helpful:

Zapdos @Life Orb
Trait: Pressure
EVs: 4 Def/252 SpA/252 Spe
Timid Nature (+Spe, -Atk)
-Thunderbolt
-Heat Wave
-Hidden Power (Grass)
-Roost

My personnal favorite set to use. With a Life Orb, Zapdos becomes a dangerous sweeper. A Timid nature and 252 EVs in Speed helps to outspeed positive-natured base 90-95 foes. Swampert and Quagsire both wall the set without Hidden Power Grass, which OHKO's them with ease and continues Zapdos' sweep.

Zapdos @Leftovers
Trait: Pressure
EVs: 248 HP/8 Def/252 Spe
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
-Substitute
-Roost
-Hidden Power (Ice)
-Thunderbolt

Pretty straightforward. SubRoost works very well with balanced teams like this in need of a defensive pivot. Use Substitute first and let the stalling begin! Roserade, Nidoqueen and Nidoking, Pokemon that wall this set, are caught by Hidden Power Ice, acting as a nasty surprise.

Also, on Typhlosion, change his Hidden Power to Grass. This helps catch most of his counters, such as Quagsire. Hidden Power Rock forces a Speed IV of 30, meaning a Pokemon with the same base Speed as Typhlosion can outspeed him.

If you decide to keep Togekiss on your team, change his ability to Serene Grace. Both Air Slash and Serene Grace make a very annoying but awesome combo! With this ability, Air Slash chances of flinching are doubled. Hustle is useless on any non-physical variant of Togekiss.

Just a few things to consider. Hope I helped! :)

Thanks! I'll apply that change to Typhlosion. When you talked about making a purely offensive Poliwrath, what did you mean? Do mean that I should invest all the IV's in Speed? I have 252 in Atk currently. and the other 252 mixed in spd and HP

What I meant is you should use a Sub/Bulk Up/Waterfall/Focus Punch with thew following EV's 132 HP / 252 Atk / 124 Spe. This helps it outspeed every bulky water there is in UU. It's bulk could wall many physical attackers (that base 90 Defense is nothing to scoff at). Also, you should switch it in on a hazard setter so you can set up a Sub and start boosting.

You have the wrong Trait on your Togekiss. I agree that Typhlosion should be scarfed, I also advise you to not use Sunny Day Vileplume, instead try Nidoking to absorb Toxic Spikes and switch into him when ever you worry your opp may be going for a toxic.

Dr Ciel has given great advice on the Poliwrath and Majestic Electric has already pointed out that Zapdos is better than Electivire. However a version of Zapdos that I like using is something like this:

Zapdos @ Black Belt
Trait: Pressure
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid/Modest Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Thunderbolt
- Heat Wave
- Volt Switch
- Roost/Hidden Power Ice

Umbreon seems like you least effective member, and I would suggest you use someone to set up some layers or to spin away layers if that's what you need. Rocks/Spikes are totally game changers.

The only problem with my edits would be that you then have too many special attackers and only one physical attacker. If you want to fix that, I'd actually suggest removing Typhlosion as well.
