A match's chance in a blizzard! (OU Hail Team)

Hello this is my first RMT on Smogon. I've tested this team out for a while now on shoddy, and the results have been more than promising. Hail in my opinion is a better weather team to run with than sandstorm. Sandstorm generally gives more poke'mon immunities on my opponent's team, and at the same time boosts some of their rock poke'mon's stats. However that's not always the case, but the main reason I decided to run with a hail team is that it doesn't grant as many immunities to most poke'mon in the OU metagame, and at the same time it is a fearful weather anomaly that makes dragon users weary of STAB Ice attacks...

HERE'S THE TEAM AT A GLANCE

Some of you may look at this and begin to think that this team might need Mamoswine or Weavile. It honestly doesn't need either, and I'll explain why in the team breakdown.

BREAKDOWN OF THE HAIL

Spr_b_g4_437_s.png

BRONZONG
NN: Nexus
Ability: Levitate
Nature: Sassy
Item: Leftovers
252 HP / 86 Atk / 80 Def / 92 SpD
Movelist:
Stealth Rock
Gyro Ball
Earthquake
Explosion

- Why I wanted to lead with Bronzong is quite simple. As the team's lead, Bronzong is quite deceptive. I setup stealth rocks and go on to either wear down their lead depending on what it is, or I'll proceed to Explode and make way for Abomasnow. Bronzong is an excellent lead for the team instead of going all out and giving away the hail strategy like most players do. Also a great partner for Heatran. -

ABOMASNOW (M)
NN: Avalanche
Ability: Snow Warning
Nature: Naughty
Held Item: Occa Berry
168 ATK / 252 SPA / 88 SPD
Movelist:
Ice Shard
Energy Ball
Earthquake
Blizzard

- Yes the reason a hail team is even possible for this generation. I decided to run with a sorta mixed set, and have it gain an advantage over the opponent when they try to wall me. I like this set a lot because of STAB Ice Shard's priority and STAB Blizzard's heavy hits against Mence and Nite. Deals good damage and the Stealth Rocks from earlier make it even better combined with Hail dropping on the opponent. Like Bronzong, also good bait for Heatran. -

Spr_b_g4_091_s.png

CLOYSTER(F)
NN: Gem Trap
Ability: Skill Link
Nature: Adamant
Item: Life Orb
252 ATK / 4 DEF / 252 SPE
Movelist:
Ice Shard
Waterfall
Rock Blast
Explosion

- I know right? Cloyster of all poke'mon on a hail team. I gotta say that it's underrated by itself, but combined with this team it can cause havoc. With the Adamant Nature Cloyster still has 396 DEF to wall out some potential physical hitters, but it's still annoying to have little HP. What makes this Cloyster truly epic is Ice Shard's STAB and priority that OHKO's Nite and Mence respectively. Against Mence, after intimidate, Rock Blast OHKO's it after hitting it 5 times with Skill Link. Nite isn't even a threat to this Cloyster. Latias is however a threat in the sense that it still has Dragon Pulse to hit this Cloyster with usually leading to a OHKO. STAB Waterfall and Ice Shard take out Heatran, Gliscor, Roserade, Breloom, Celebi, Flygon, and Aerodactyl. 2HKO's T-Tar and Zapdos. Explosion is for when I can do decent damage on the way out. This Cloyster pretty much replaced the need for Weavile and Mamoswine respectively, and it definitely increased the amount of wins on shoddy. -

WALREIN (M)
NN: Cold Fang
Ability: Ice Body
Nature: Bold
Item: Leftovers
220 HP / 244 DEF / 46 SPD
Movelist:
Protect
Substitute
Yawn
Blizzard

- Yeah I thought that "32 Turns of Stall" might as well have been the way to go on this one. All credit to this Walrein goes to Dragontamer. Yeah it works..lol All explanations on this link: http://www.smogon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28213 -

Spr_b_g4_471.png

GLACEON (F)
NN: Snow Queen
Ability: Snow Cloak
Nature: Modest
Item: Choice Scarf
252 SPA / 4 DEF / 252 SPE
Movelist:
Blizzard
Water Pulse
Hidden Power (Fighting)
Shadow Ball

- Having the most powerful Blizzard in the OU metagame is a pretty nice feature, and combined with a scarf it makes it twice as dangerous as it would normally be. With the SPA to take out even the bulkiest of poke'mon it reigns as the Queen of Hail. It's also makes a very good partner for Heatran. -

Spr_b_g4_485_s.png

HEATRAN (M)
NN: Magma King
Ability: Flash Fire
Nature: Timid
Item: Choice Scarf
Movelist:
Flamethrower
Earth Power
Hidden Power (Ice)
Explosion

- If you have the necessary bait for this fella why not use him? I mean getting free boosts from incoming fire attacks is pretty good, and having high potential on any team is always good as well. I don't know what else to say other than "MY GOD IT'S A HEATRAN!". Lol but yeah I think it does wonders on this team.

I hope that you can all give me feedback on what you think might be better for this team. = )

Hello and it thank God it seems like someone else is running Hail. A few changes are, however, necessary.

First of all, since the ice type carries a Stealth Rock weakness, it is advisable to have Rapid spin somewhere on your team. Usually, since Toxic Spikes are helpful for Supporting Walrein, Tentacruel is used for this. I would suggest that if you continue not to run Toxic Spikes, you put Toxic on Walrein.

At the moment, the least necessary members of your team are Cloyster and Glaceon. Generally, the aim of hail is to facilitate a walrein stall and to cause as much damage during this as possible. Consequently, Hail stall teams need to keep their entry hazards on the field. For this reason I would suggest a Rotom-F, more specifically the RestTalk set, as you will have somewhat reduced durabilty with hail cancelling lefties, and this will give you a status absorber.

Conclusion: Tentacruel/Rotom over Glaceon/Cloyster

I would suggest Roar over Yawn on Walrein. This helps with Setup sweepers and against baton passers. If for some reason you decide to keep Glaceon, Water pulse is useless. There are not really any more attacking moves that would improve your coverage, so a number of support options are available - Wish, Heal Bell and sleep talk all have limited uses.

Hope I helped. Good luck.

Thank you very much jc104 for your response! I was actually thinking of replacing Cloyster if not for it taking down a bunch of dragons, but yeah other than that I had no real use for it. I guess an effective hail stall would be much better with Tentacruel support. I was also thinking of incorporating Frosslass as a spin blocker. What do you think?

Hello

jc104 has covered most of the team, but I notice a little Tyranitar weakness and Lucario could be problematic as well when Scarftran has been taking out so I suggest Gliscor over you Bronzong lead.

Gliscor @ Leftovers/ Jolly/ Sand Veil
80 HP, 172 Atk, 252 Def, 6 Spe

- Taunt
- Earthquake
- Roost
- Stealth Rock

--> Gliscor can set up SR and prevent the opponent from doing the same with Taunt. it makes a great counter to Tyranitar and to a lesser extend Lucario.

Hope this helped.

Thank you for your input Delko! I really appreciate your input and I'll be sure to consider it when I rebuild the team = )

Spr_b_g4_437_s.png

BRONZONG
NN: Nexus
Ability: Levitate
Nature: Sassy
Item: Leftovers
252 HP / 86 Atk / 80 Def / 92 SpD
Movelist:
Stealth Rock
Gyro Ball
Earthquake
Explosion

The lucario and Tyranitar problems have been mentioned and I will not continue in that particular discussion. Gliscor would work well as a lead, but I still suggest that you lead with Abomnasnow to get the hail going as quickly as possible.

ABOMASNOW (M)
NN: Avalanche
Ability: Snow Warning
Nature: Naughty
Held Item: Occa Berry
168 ATK / 252 SPA / 88 SPD
Movelist:
Ice Shard
Energy Ball
Earthquake
Blizzard

I suggest that you run a Substitue Abomnasnow set.
Abomasnow @ Leftovers
Timid Nature
4 ATK, 252 SPE, 252 SPA
-Substitute
-Focus Punch
-Blizzard
-Leech Seed
To some extent, a wall breaker.

CLOYSTER(F)
NN: Gem Trap
Ability: Skill Link
Nature: Adamant
Item: Life Orb
252 ATK / 4 DEF / 252 SPE
Movelist:
Ice Shard
Waterfall
Rock Blast
Explosion

Tentacruel support would be welcomed here. Yes Cloyster is useful, but with Heatran as a revenge killer (With HP Ice I might add) you may find that its not that necessary to bring Cloyster around.
Tentacruel @ Leftovers
Timid Nature
252 HP, 120 DEF, 136 SPD
-Rapid Spin
-HP Electric / Blizzard
-Surf
-Toxic Spikes

Spr_b_g4_365.png

WALREIN (M)
NN: Cold Fang
Ability: Ice Body
Nature: Bold
Item: Leftovers
220 HP / 244 DEF / 46 SPD
Movelist:
Protect
Substitute
Yawn
Blizzard

With HG/SS coming out, Walrein now has access to Super Fang if I'm not mistaken. If not, then I suggest using it over Yawn. The reason being if you go with Tentacruel and have Toxic Spikes support, then yawn is pertty useless, even with one layer up.

GLACEON (F)
NN: Snow Queen
Ability: Snow Cloak
Nature: Modest
Item: Choice Scarf
252 SPA / 4 DEF / 252 SPE
Movelist:
Blizzard
Water Pulse
Hidden Power (Fighting)
Shadow Ball
The recommended move over Water Pulse is Sleep Talk. A good reason to use is that way you have a sleep absorber.

HEATRAN (M)
NN: Magma King
Ability: Flash Fire
Nature: Timid
Item: Choice Scarf
Movelist:
Flamethrower
Earth Power
Hidden Power (Ice)
Explosion
It would help if you listed EV's.
If youre running Explosion, then a Naive nature should used. Also, an EV spread of 252 SPA, 252 SPE and 4 ATK ought to be enough.
