SM OU A More Defensive Balanced Team

Hello! For some background, I haven't played competitive Pokemon in two years, but my interest in it has become rekindled recently. Unfortunately, I have no idea what most Gen 7 pokemon are capable of (past the Smogon analyses and the slow learning through Pokemon Showdown). So I've made a team and tested it out, and since there's still much for me to learn, I'd love for you guys to critique my first balanced OU team back. Technically, it's more defensive, but it's not a stall team.

sableye-mega.gif

Sableye @ Sablenite
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Will-O-Wisp
- Knock Off
- Recover
- Protect

Mega Sableye! Your typical anti-lead. I've grown accustomed to anti-leads more than I have actual hazard-setters. This Sableye is especially dangerous in that unless the enemy has a Clefable or a fire type, there is no really good switch into a Will-o-Wisp.

----------------------------------------------------

landorus-therian.gif

Landorus-Therian @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- U-turn
- Explosion

Landorus-T is my physical attacker / sweeper of choice. He works well as a revenge killer and as late-game cleanup. Landorus serves as amazing pressure to most fast sweepers, because every move he has threatens their lives.

----------------------------------------------------

celesteela.gif

Celesteela @ Leftovers
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Relaxed Nature
- Leech Seed
- Protect
- Heavy Slam
- Flamethrower

Celesteela covers Sableye's bases. He's the response to those pesky fairy types who love to destroy my life. He's the quintessential steel wall that teams with defensive aspects have most of the time.

----------------------------------------------------

volcarona.gif

Volcarona @ Buginium Z
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Quiver Dance
- Bug Buzz
- Flamethrower
- Psychic

Volcarona is both my special attacker and my response to walls. She also covers the vulnerability to ice that seems to be going around, as well as being a good response to fairy types as well. This Volcarona is an especially good pick into Clefable (provided she has not set up stealth rocks). The Buginium-Z gives Volcarona a massive one-time attack to eliminate threats that I find too pressing for the team to be able to handle reliably.

----------------------------------------------------

rotom-wash.gif

Rotom-Wash @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 204 Def / 52 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hydro Pump
- Volt Switch
- Pain Split
- Defog

Meet Rotom, my defogger and sort-of wall. It would be awful to not have a defogger, because then my Volcarona would be useless. He's the response to Heatran, Landorus, and all else that the rest of my team couldn't reliably deal with, being a water type. I decided to not give him will-o-wisp since Sableye already has it. Pain Split makes it extremely difficult for non-regenerative walls to do their job, and volt switch allows me to predict switches more reliably, as it will always go after the switch.

----------------------------------------------------

tangrowth.gif

Tangrowth @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Giga Drain
- Knock Off
- Earthquake
- Hidden Power [Ice]

When building the team, I noticed my team had a massive weakness to Greninja (and water in general, but mostly Greninja). So I wondered-- who would be the best Greninja check? Chansey, perhaps, but I already have enough stalling with Sableye and Celesteela. Not to mention that the rest of my team has a weakness to Electric types except Landorus-T, but even then, every offensive electric type in OU carries HP Ice in their standard sets.

----------------------------------------------------

I guess I made a more defensive team since I'm not comfortable in my ability to play offensive / hyper offense teams quite yet, but I'll get there. I just need to relearn my game, especially with this team. Thank you to anyone who critiques my team!

Hi! Welcome back.

This is one recommendation I always make, but Assault Vest Tapu Bulu outclasses Tangrowth 95% of the time imo. Much more offensive presence and more options for recovery with Grassy Terrain acting as Leftovers and Horn Leech giving great recovery, especially as it is also damage boosted by the terrain. Also using Psychium Z instead of Bugium Z will still give you that one-time nuke, but will help much more in dealing with Toxapex at +1. I would highly highly recommend changing the Landorus set up so you can get Stealth Rocks on your team, only low level players are going to be fooled by Magic Bounce and Volcarona essentially needs the hazard support to be really effective.

The two options here could be to drop Sableye, make Landorus the cliché lead with rocks and add another Scarfer, Kartana would go well with AV Bulu as the Leaf Blade would be boosted by Grassy Terrain and Beast Boost is great to Snowball and clean late-game. The other route would be to use Stealth Rocks over Explosion, seeing as you want Landorus as a late-game cleaner, there's no sense in blowing up your win-con, though you will lose some utility in breaking through stall, but you can bluff the defensive set and get Rocks up on the switch, if you also opted for Rock Polish over Scarf, you can use Polish/EQ/StoneEdge/StealthRock, to utilise Intimidate and get rocks up early game and set-up to sweep after the opponent in weakened late-game. Intimidate can be great for providing set-up opportunities. These are both unsets, but its a good option to take without removing Sableye and preserving your speed control.

I hope this helps!

Why, hello there!

That is a team that fits my style but there are a few changes I would make.

Zygarde > Landorus-Therian:
I have noticed that you are weak to Charizard-X, that is why i chose Zygarde. While it does not improve the match-up against Dragon Claw Charizard-X, it does improve your match-up against Dragon Claw-less Charizard-X, Tyranitar and even Excadrill, although you have a pretty good match-up against it with Rotom-W.

Clefable > Tangrowth:
This might seem a little odd but you really need Stealth Rocks on your team. Clefable not only gives you that but also Magic Guard makes it a comfortable pivit to other hazard setters and be able to punish those.

Sp. Defensive Celesteela > Defensive Celesteela:
Tapu-Lele is kind of an issue to your team as well, which is why I would recommend running Sp.Defensive Celesteela. Make it 252 in Sp.Def and you should be good.

Clef and Zygarde Set

*My recommendations have left some other holes e.g. having a pretty bad Tapu-Koko match-up or you not having speed control anymore. My bad for that, but you should have a decent match-up against the majority of teams now.

Hope I helped you in any way, man!

Hey, I agree with a lot of the points made above along with some of my own.

You should definitely make your Celesteela Sp. Defensive, as most fairies your going to encounter like Tapu Lele and Clefable are special. This also means you could change your mega sableye to defensive, or keep it sp. defensive also.

I would go assault vest Tapu Bulu over tangrowth because it is a better greninja check, resisting both its stab moves. It also does quite a lot of damage because of grassy terrain. Along with natures madness, it can cripple mons on the switch into it.

Pretty much every team needs rocks, but I wouldn't get rid of your ash gen counter. Rocks aren't likely to go up because of mega sableye, so I feel getting rid of Rotom-Wash for a stealth rocker would be nice. Gliscor or Hippowdon would help out your team. They are both defensive and can take hits from landorus and heatran that you mentioned, and most importantly, can get up stealth rocks. If you are looking for more bulk and a whirlwind user to stop setup sweepers, then Hippowdon would be the way to go. Along with this, incase rocks do get up, I would replace explosion on Landorus-T with Defog.

Hippowdon @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 144 Def / 112 SpD
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Slack Off
- Whirlwind

Gliscor @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Poison Heal
EVs: 244 HP / 76 SpD / 188 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Roost
- U-turn

Celesteela @ Leftovers
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Heavy Slam
- Flamethrower
- Leech Seed
- Protect

Tapu Bulu @ Assault Vest
Ability: Grassy Surge
EVs: 248 HP / 60 Atk / 56 SpD / 144 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Horn Leech
- Wood Hammer
- Superpower
- Nature's Madness

Landorus-Therian (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- U-turn
- Defog

Hope this helps out your team.
