Almost all the teams I've built for OU before now have been weather-based, and I got highest in the ladder with a rain team, but after playing RU I kind of hate weather now and wanted to make a solid OU team that doesn't have to use weather to be successful. It's a pretty solid team, but of course I still have to play around weather which is a pain in the ass. The best advice I could get on this team would probably be a member who could effectively neutralize weather. I know some teams run a poke with Hail to get rid of rain and sand, but it's not very easy to fit that on a moveslot and I'm not even sure if any of my pokes can learn Hail. Well, here goes.
@ Leftovers
Flash Fire
252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SDef
Calm
- Lava Plume
- Dragon Pulse
- Substitute/Roar
- Stealth Rock
Can't really call it my lead since leads don't exist anymore, and I honestly don't have this hit the field first too often, but setting up rocks early is always nice. It's a defensive EV spread but I've been toying around with a few things and right now I usually Sub up because people generally switch in a fighting type or something against me and then either put down rocks or attack. Even without investment Heatran can do damage and Fire/Dragon both has great neutral coverage and hits shit like Garchomp and Latios who like to switch in on my (BAN ME PLEASE) (the former won't matter for too much longer though). Heatran's good but he just has so many weaknesses it can be tough to play a defensive spread sometimes but he's bulky enough to go up against most special attacking walls and get his job done.
Edit: After some more playtesting it seems like the phasing from Roar is more valuable than Sub, so I'm probably going to use that.
@ Leftovers
Levitate
112 HP / 252 SAtk / 144 Spd
Modest
- Thunderbolt
- Hydro Pump
- Will-O-Wisp
- Pain Split
Rotom is straight stuntin with his beautiful typing and he acts as an important defensive pivot on my team. It's the standard set so I don't have too much to say about it here but its one of my favorite pokes in OU with its bulk, powerful special attack, and Pain Split. I can't remember if he learns Hail and I might run that over Will-O-Wisp to fuck up weather teams but obviously WoW helps a lot.
@ Choice Band
Technician
248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 Spd
Adamant
- U-turn
- Bullet Punch
- Superpower
- Pursuit
I've always preferred CB Scizor over the SD variant mostly it doesn't really feel restricted by choice to me considering how stuff switches into it and how I'm usually either U-Turning the first turn in or sweeping with Bullet Punch. He really works well in any stage of the game which just makes Scizor a wonderfully versatile pivot, especially with his respectable defenses.
@ Leftovers
Levitate
4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid
- Substitute
- Disable
- Shadow Ball
- Focus Blast
The mixture of Disable and Substitute give Gengar a cool pseudo-bulk and he really isn't that hard to switch in given how ubiquitous fighting type moves are this gen. He can chip away at a lot of walls with his great special attack and his ridiculous speed. I've previously had some trouble putting Gengar on teams because I just haven't seen how a non-boosting Special Attacker as frail as he is can find a place on a team but he honestly never disappoints me. Just a great poke all around and pretty versatile too.
@ Toxic Orb
Poison Heal
252 HP / 184 Def / 72 Spd
Impish
- Substitute
- Protect
- Earthquake
- Toxic
Remember when people thought Poison Heal Gliscor was gimmicky because it didn't have Roost? Poison Heal Gliscor is just an amazing poke for so many reasons - great stats, great typing, amazing ability and a movepool big enough to abuse all of it. You see a lot of SD Gliscors around but I'm pretty partial to this set because it gets its job done and is incredibly annoying for a weakened team to face. Phazers and taunters have to be dealt with first, but Gliscor outspeeds most pokes who use taunt anyways (jellicent, skarmory), can deal with haxorus if I get a sub on the switch, and I shouldn't be in against Thundurus anyways. He's both a great stallbreaker and a great tank - STAB Earthquake isn't terribly strong but it deals with most sweepers. Probably my favorite poke on this team.
@ Life Orb
Justified
4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly
- Swords Dance
- Close Combat
- Stone Edge
- Leaf Blade
My sweeper - I use an SD set because it sets up much faster than the CM set and I don't have to rely on the annoying Focus Blast for fighting coverage. fighting/rock/grass has perfect coverage I'm pretty sure (actually heracross might resist it but who cares about heracross) and Virizion is naturally fast and just bulky enough to take a hit from a tank or a wall but he really isn't meant to stay around too long. I do use his resistances to bring him in midgame sometimes and break a wall or something, which he's pretty good at. I was thinking about using Terrakion as my sweeper for a while but the resistances and grass coverage won me over to Virizion.
Well yeah, there's my team. I do enjoy it, but as I've said I'd most like to find out a way to better deal with weather because, as I've said again, weather is gay. Thanks for advice to whoever takes the time to read this.
