[AAA] Tyranitar [QC: 0/3] [GP: 0/2]

[QC: 0/3] [GP: 0/2]

[OVERVIEW]

  • Good offensive typing in Rock/Dark, giving it strong STAB moves to spam when backed by Adaptability. This, along with Tyranitar's high attack stat makes it the best pursuit trapper in the metagame.
  • With Choice Band and backed by Adaptability it can tear through bulkier teams and Pursuit trap and KO Pokemon on predicted switches.
  • Good revenge killer with scarf, with the ability trap and KO threats like Gengar, Latios and Victini. It also hits a good speed tier with scarf, outspeeding most common threats but not the tier's fastest attackers.
  • Rock typing, access to Dragon Dance and the added bulk after mega evolving let it pull of sweeps without being stopped in it's tracks by common priority users.
  • The wallbreaker variant faces competition from other wallbreakers like Pangoro and Heracross.
  • Typing leaves it with a nasty weakness to common types in the metagame.
  • Speed tier makes it struggle vs faster offensive teams and without band it doesn't do as well with trapping vs bulkier teams.
  • Mega form faces competition from Pokemon like Mega Metagross which fit the same role, but are even harder to revenge kill due to it's resistance to all common form of priority.
  • However, its ability to trap and kill things reliably and open up opportunities for its teammates give it a solid niche over the competition and makes it the better option in more offensive, fast paced teams.
  • Dragon Dance Mega Tyranitar is an often overlooked pokemon to face and can take advantage of regular Tyranitar's popularity to set up and sweep the opposing team, making it a competitor for the mega slot.

[SET]
name: Choice Band
move 1: Pursuit
move 2: Crunch
move 3: Stone Edge
move 4: Superpower
item: Choice Band
ability: Adaptability
nature: Adamant
evs: 252 Atk/ 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

  • Pursuit allows it to trap and KO pokemon to help out teammates, hitting like a truck when banded.
  • Crunch is a reliable STAB move that provides near unresisted coverage and is very useful vs the many bulky Psychic types in the tier and 2HKOs the best physical wall in the tier, Doublade.
  • Stone Edge 2HKOs everything it hits neutrally and is the move to click vs any physically defensive pokemon that does not resist it.
  • Superpower hits switchins like Lucario and Pangoro, as well as things like Ferrothorn and Heatran.
  • Iron Head can catch Fairy Types by surprise and knock them out, namely PH Diancie.
  • Stealth Rock can also be used on Tyranitar to make use of it's ability to force switches while bluffing non choice. It also provides utility if Tyranitar switches into Knock Off at one point.

Set Details
========

  • Max Attack Adamant maximises the damage output from Tyranitar's moves and this is aided by Choice Band.
  • Choice Band is preferred over Life Orb for the extra damage and lack of recoil, giving it a slightly longer life span.
  • Max Speed is required to outpace no Speed investment Meloetta and Speed tie with opposing Tyranitar. The rest is dumped in Defense.

Usage Tips
========

  • Checks Choice Locked Gale Wings users, Skarmory and Zapdos.
  • It can trap and kill non Focus Blast variants of Victini
  • Can revenge kill Latios after something has died to a Draco Meteor, do not bring Tyranitar into a Draco Meteor though, it will be OHKO'd.
  • Pursuit traps Special walls like Goodra and Chansey for teammates.
  • While it can beat Doublade, it cannot beat one that's at full HP 100% of the time. If you have a switchin for Doublade, you should go to it.
  • Try not to switch Tyranitar into attacks unless absolutely necessary, it doesn't take neutral attacks very well.

Team Options
========
  • Magnet Pull Infernape is a good partner to it as it can get rid of Lucario and Defensive Skarmory, two pokemon that force out Tyranitar.
  • A Stealth Rock setter like Ferrothorn or Skarmory is a good teammate because Tyranitar forces a lot of switches and Stealth Rock takes advantage of this.
  • Special setup sweepers like Manaphy or generally strong special attackers like Latios and Genesect are good partners for Tyranitar because they take advantage of the fact that Tyranitar can trap and KO their counters.
  • Switchins for Fighting types and offensive Water types are also important because both are common threats and force Tyranitar out, so something like Desolate Land Victini or Chandelure would also be a good partner.

[SET]
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Pursuit
move 2: Crunch
move 3: Rock Slide / Stone Edge
move 4: Iron Head / Superpower
item: Choice Scarf
ability: Adaptability
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Atk/ 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

  • Crunch is a strong STAB move that allows it to KO common offensive Psychic types it outspeeds, successfully revengekilling them.
  • Pursuit traps and KOs Pokemon like Latios and Victini as they attempt to switch out, also wears down Choice locked Gale Wings users and Thundurus.
  • Rock Slide KOs Gale Wings users, bar Skarmory, and Thundurus if/when they try to Superpower it.
  • Stone Edge is an option over Rock Slide for the added power, but in cases like the above, missing means a dead Tyranitar.
  • Iron Head catches Diancie that try to switch into it and can revenge kill Diancie and other Fairies in a pinch.
  • Superpower can KO Lucario on the switch and do more damage to Ferrothorn or Heatran than the rest of the moves in this set can.
  • Stealth Rock can be used in the last slot to take advantage of Tyranitar's ability to force switches and can become useful if Tyranitar ends up getting Knocked off.
Set Details
========

  • Choice Scarf allows it to serve as a revenge killer.
  • Max Speed Jolly is required to outpace the max speed base 115s and 252 Attack is used to maximise the power of Tyranitar's moves, the rest is put into Defense.

Usage Tips
========

  • While this set is a good offensive check to things like Gengar, Latios, Victini, Thundurus and Gale Wings users, it should not be switched into them directly unless you're in a really tight situation. It should be brought in by double switches when they're predicted to switch in or to revenge kill after they've gotten a kill.
  • While using Superpower or Iron Head, the point is to use them to catch them as they switch in. Tyranitar should not be switching into Lucario or Diancie to kill them or try to revenge them unless there's no other choice but to do so.

Team Options
========
  • Reliable hazard setters like Defensive Skarmory and Ferrothorn are good partners to Tyranitar, the former can double as a Fighting switchin and the latter a Water switchin.
  • Checks to Water and Fighting types are necessary because after Tyranitar gets a kill, it will invite in Fighting and Water type pokemon to set up on it or throw out a powerful attack. Water Absorb Doublade is an interesting partner for this reason. Pokemon like Zapdos or Desolate Land Chandelure are also options.
  • Since Tyranitar will be switching around quite a bit, a hazard remover is also necessary. So, Gale Wings or Prankster Skarmory and Starmie are good partners.
  • Wallbreakers like Heracross and Latios can nuke the opposing team, leaving them in range for a late game Crunch Sweep from Tyranitar.

[SET]
name: Dragon Dance
move 1: Dragon Dance
move 2: Crunch
move 3: Stone Edge
move 4: Earthquake / Ice Punch
item: Tyranitarite
ability: Magic Bounce / Intimidate / Defiant
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

  • Dragon Dance boosts Tyranitar's Speed and Attack, allowing it to clean Late game or just break things for other cleaners midgame.
  • Crunch is reliable STAB that can be used to hit the plethora of Psychic types that roam the metagame. This allows Tyranitar to reliably KO offensive threats like Gengar, Latios and Victini after a Dragon Dance.
  • Stone Edge is the strongest move in the set and the best one it has to hit switchins like Suicune and Skarmory.
  • Earthquake completes the EdgeQuake combination, providing near unresisted coverage and KOs Lucario that switch in.
  • Ice Punch KOs Zygarde which can otherwise shuffle it out, hit it with earthquake or just set up on it.
  • Superpower can also be used in the last slot as it OHKO's Pangoro, which can live any of the other attacks from this set and hits Ferrothorn the hardest out of all the moves listed here.

Set Details
========

  • Jolly Max Speed is required to let Tyranitar outpace base 115s after a boost and max Attack is used to maximise the power of Tyranitar's moves.

Usage Tips
========

  • Possessing no means of recovery, it's generally best to keep Tyranitar out of the field until it's ready to set up so that it's not weakened to the point where it can be revenge killed by common priority moves or Scarfers.
  • Tyranitar is good at its job as it's sizable bulk after mega evolving allows it to not be picked off by priority.
  • The base ability essentially decides what it can set up against. Intimidate means it can set up against Physical attackers like Victini or Gale Wings Skarmory, Magic Bounce sets up on Bulky Passive Pokemon in fatter teams and lastly Illusion can pretty much set up on anything provided you're smart about it.
  • Depending on the Matchup, it can either Set Up and do a lot of damage midgame, letting Priority users clean up late game or it can let the other wallbreakers in the team weaken the opponent's team for Tyranitar to clean late game.

Team Options
========

  • Reliable hazard setters like Deoxys-S are good partners as Tyranitar appreciates the chip damage when it's trying to sweep.
  • Wallbeakers like Thundurus can beat things like Unaware Suicune which otherwise beats this set and can punch holes in the opposition's team so Tyranitar can clean up late game.
  • Cleaners like Gale Wings or Extreme Speed users are good partners as they can clean up if DD Tyranitar is used midgame to punch holes in the opponent's team.
  • Magnet Pull Users are also good partners because Pokemon like Magnet Pull Infernape can trap and kill Ferrothorn and Skarmory which can hinder Tyranitar's sweep.

Other Options
=============

  • Assault Vest Regenerator can be used to very reliably trap and kill Latios and Victini, check Skarmory, getting surprise kills on Gengar and wear down Choice locked Gale Wings users.
  • White Herb Unburden Curse Tyranitar can be used as a late game cleaner as it speeds up Tyranitar to the point where nothing in the unboosted metagame, bar Deoxys-S, outspeeds it, while giving it an attack and a Defense boost, making it near impossible to revengekill.
  • Life Orb Sheer Force can be used for a Dragon Dance set since Crunch, Rock Slide, Elemental Punches and Iron Head are boosted, it can even be used to run a mixed set or a fully special lure set.
  • Bulletproof and Magic Bounce can also be used for Dragon Dance sets that do not mega evolve, the former setting up on predicted focus blasts from Gengar or Thundurus and the latter setting up on passive pokemon trying to inflict status on Tyranitar, like Mew.
  • Poison Heal with Fire Blast can be a Skarmory and Victini check and is a reliable Stealth Rock setter.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Fighting Types**: Pokemon like Lucario and Pangoro can switch in on it's STAB moves and force out all but the Dragon Dance Mega variant, since the former gets OHKO'd by +1 Earthquake.

**Defensive Steel Types**: Ferrothorn and Skarmory, specifically the intimidate variant, can switch in on Tyranitar's STAB moves and force it out or set up hazards.

**PH Diancie**: It can switch in on Crunches and Superpowers and force Tyranitar out. The Dragon Dance mega variant can win this matchup however.

Why have you got Curse listed on the Choice Scarf set? And why does the Dragon Dance set have Choice Band / Choice Scarf listed as the items? Use the Tyranitarite instead.

Those were errors while copy/pasting sets that i somehow missed, thank you for pointing it out. If there's anything else, let me know.

(fixed)

  • Mention how Tyranitar is prone to being worn down by hazards, since Choice sets switch often and it takes full damage from them.
  • Your bullet points are kind of all over the place here - you mention its bulk and typing quite a few times. Dedicate a bullet point (or more if you want) to its bulk and typing, and remove mentions of it elsewhere.
  • "outspeeding most relevant threats barring Deoxys-S" makes Scarf Tyranitar sound a lot faster than it actually is - it can outspeed everything up to Starmie but that's it, which is really slow for something holding a Scarf. Something like "can outspeed most common threats but not the tier's fastest attackers" would be a better description.
  • Merge both Dragon Dance bullet points and make sure to only talk about Mega Tyranitar when talking about DD, since Mega is the only DD set in the analysis.
  • Reorder your bullet points to prioritize talking about regular Tyranitar first, and then Mega Tyranitar second so the analysis is easier to read (Ideal order would be TTar main strengths, MegaTar main strengths, TTar weaknesses, MegaTar weaknesses).
  • Overall good overview though!
Moves
  • Remove Iron Head, Diancie and every other Fairy for that matter don't take Stone Edge well at all.
Set Details
  • No need to talk about the last 4 EVs here.
  • Explain what Adaptability does.
Usage Tips
  • Mention that you should try to keep hazards off the field when using Tyranitar, as its low speed, common weaknesses, and Choice Band all contribute to Tyranitar switching a lot and make this set particularly vulnerable to them.
Team Options
  • Talk about how Tyranitar is a good fit on teams that have trouble with stall or defensively oriented teams in general, as it can trap and severely damage or kill commonly used special walls such as Chansey and Goodra.
  • Mention Defog and Rapin Spin users such as Skarmory and Starmie to remove hazards for Tyranitar and extend its lifespan.
Set
  • Stone Edge should be slashed over Rock Slide cause additional power is really important (change move descriptions to favor Stone Edge as well).
  • Unslash Iron Head and remove it in moves too - hitting Lucario is far more important than hitting the relatively uncommon Diancie, which doesn't take Stone Edge comfortably anyway.
Set Details
  • No need to talk about the last 4 EVs here.
  • Explain what Adaptability does.
Usage Tips
  • Remove Iron Head here.
  • I wouldn't say Tyranitar should never switch in since it does have great bulk after all. Instead, say that you should be careful about switching Tyranitar in, as while it can tank most neutral hits it also has many common weaknesses and could end up dying to a super-effective hit if used without caution.
Set Details
  • Explain what Magic Bounce, Intimidate, and Defiant do here. (And I guess give Illusion a mention here too since you talk about being an unlisted option later on.)
Usage Tips
  • When you talk about Tyranitar's possible abilities, talk about them in the order which they appear in on the set.
  • "...allows it to not be picked off by priority bar relatively rare Pixilate ExtremeSpeed users".
Other Options
  • Make sure to specify that White Herb Unburden Curse is single-use.
  • A fully physical Sheer Force set isn't really viable in my opinion, but talk up the mixed one which is actually surprisingly strong and fantastic at wallbreaking.
Checks and Counters
  • Diancie is decimated by Stone Edge so it can't really counter Tar.
  • Mention Intimidate Hippowdon which can take pretty much any move due to its ginormous bulk and threaten Tyranitar back with STAB Earthquake.

I'll try and get this done tomorrow? I was free when I took this up, but am a bit busy right now. Alternatively, you could give it away to someone else.
