Abusing Genesect
Team in Action

Great work with Mandibuzz and Landorous. I especially love burning a Gardevoir to death by switching immunities in over and over.

Better work from Dugtrio. This shows just how much momentum Dugtrio can add to a match. Very one sided match.

This is more good work from Dugtrio, but it ended in a loss and I feel like it’s a great example of my team’s shortcomings. After this match I switched Defog for Taunt, since entry hazards can ruin Dugtrio's Sash and wear down my Volt-Turn core after multiple switch ins.
Team at a Glance
This team was born from a simple thought. “I hate Genesect!” He hits really hard, his coverage is amazing, and his hit and run playstyle makes him a tough Poke to deal with. This team started as a way to learn to play with Genesect so that I could see his strengths and weaknesses first hand. It evolved into a way to get cheap wins with a team that let’s Genesect play to his strengths.
Detailed Look
Mandibuzz (F) @ Leftovers
Ability: Overcoat
EVs: 248 HP / 148 Def / 112 Spd
Bold Nature
- Foul Play
- Defog
- Roost
- Toxic
Mandibuzz provides a lot for this team. I found early on that I would need a Defoger to protect Dugtrio's Focus Sash (a crucial partner to Genesect, I will explain, in detail, later), and because my Volt-Turn core takes a lot of residual damage from Stealth Rock. Furthermore, I wanted another Status inducer that could hit fire types that threaten Genesect. Toxic + Roost stall is mainly an alternate answer for Char X & Y, and Talonflame who can cause problems since Dugtrio won't be able to trap these threats.
The EVs are for a fast Defog which can be crucial in the late game. Overcoat lets me ignore TTar's Sandstorm and Switch in to powder moves with impunity.
Rotom-Wash @ Chesto Berry
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 68 Def / 188 SDef
Bold Nature
- Will-O-Wisp
- Hydro Pump
- Volt Switch
- Rest
What can I say about Rotom that hasn’t already been said? He is a great addition to any Volt-Turn core and this is no exception. He provides a useful list of resistances that pair perfectly with Genesect and Lando-T. Since Pain Split can be very situational, I went with Chesto Rest. Rest isn't always useful either, but it's far more effective than Leftovers, and I can sometimes use it to burn stall to death. Rest also makes Rotom a psuedo status absorber, which was needed since I don't have a burn immunity otherwise.
EVs are very important here. The Def EVs are minimal. If I get a burn on my opponent, Rotom will eat the attacks anyway. Why not take the unnecessary Def EVs, and turn Rotom into a mixed wall!
Landorus-Therian (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 248 HP / 172 Def / 88 Spd
Jolly Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Knock Off
- U-turn
Landorus makes for a good Volt Turn core with Rotom and Genesect. Having that revolving door of Poison / Electric / and Ground immunities really messes with people’s head. Not to mention having a good Intimidate user in your Volt Turn core makes switching in on problematic Physical Attackers much easier.
Knock Off was recently added over Stone Edge. Intimidate causes a lot of Switches, and KO is a great coverage move. The accuracy is better, I already had two Rock attackers and didn't need a third, and the item removal can really come in handy especially against Special Walls that annoy Genesect.
EVs are such that he can take a hit and outs peed a few common walls. I don’t need this guy to hit hard I need him to stay alive as long as possible to give Genesect safe switch ins.
Genesect @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Download
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Naive Nature
- U-turn
- Flamethrower
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt
The common Choice Scarf set. This one set is so centralizing that many people are running weird pokemon just to counter this guy. I saw a speed invested, speed boosting nature, Jirachi with Fire Punch! When I asked why the guy said “I need something to catch Genesect’s by surprise!” Anyway, this guy’s Uber potential can be discussed another time.
Here are the obligatory three sentences about why he is here. Download + U Turn makes him an amazing prediction/scouting tool against walls who can go Specially or Physically defensive. Unless a move is resisted, it will hurt enemies hard. Genesect can easily sweep once Dugtrio Trap Kills his counters. Even if he can’t sweep, he can easily Revenge Kill.
Tyranitar @ Tyranitarite
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Fire Punch
- Rock Slide
- Crunch
Dragon Dance Tyranitar seemed like a natural choice to pair with Genesect. Sandstorm can really down enemy teams, and can give pause to Sun teams who threaten Rotom, Dugtrio, and Genesect.
That being said, Ttar feels like the most "tacked on" member of the team. On the one hand, he has never under performed, but on the other hand he doesn't add much except being a Set Up Sweeper, and an Alt. win condition if Genesect falls. Rock Slide is chosen over Stone Edge because I need the accuracy more than the power after I set up. The perfect example of how mixed I feel can be found below.

#Mixed Feelings
I would like to run Dragon Tail so that I have a phazing move. I've thought about a Substitute set where I can set up a 101 HP sub, and then proceed to Phaze with Dtail or hit hard with Focus Punch. I am undecided here.
Dugtrio @ Focus Sash
Ability: Arena Trap
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Reversal
- Sucker Punch
- Stone Edge
THE HEATRAN ASSASSIN! This guy is Genesect’s best friend on the team! Heatran walls Genesect hard. Dugtrio traps and kills him with Earthquake. If that were his only advantage, I would still use him, but he adds so much more. I have two matches above which clearly show how much momentum Dugtrio can bring to a match. After a trap kill, people generally try to send in a Flier so that they aren't trapped again, so I run Stone Edge to hit them.
Reversal & Sucker Punch are great parting gifts once my Sash has been used.
