Proposal Adding GSC NU to SPL

Recently, there have been sentiments that the hype and interest in SPL is at a low. After experiencing sadness and distraught at the fall of this once great tournament, I conceived a solution to this. I have seemingly figured out the solution to SPL’s dwindling hype and aura as a tournament. That solution is replacing GSC OU (or any other OU gen, but this makes the most sense)…with GSC NU!?

Why we should consider this?

#1: GSC NU is a tier with a passionate community.

Recently the GSC NU community has gone something of a renaissance. With new superb players like Shengineer spinning onto the battlefield, there is clearly some life left in this old gen metagame. The metagame has developed a ton in the six years since Raichu / Poliwrath / Golduck were banned. This development is so fortuitous that other old gen OUs, like ADV, blush in shame. In particular, the Einsteinian playerbase have developed fresh new playstyles such as Shuckle Stall and Houndour Baton Pass.

There was also an invitational held for GSC NU last year. Wanna know what other tiers have invitationals? The various OU tiers in SPL. GSC OU invitational…GSC NU invitational….see the difference?

The immaculate passion for GSC NU is shown through the memes surrounding the tier. In particular, the gif surrounding Pineco’s tendency to use Spikes, Rapid Spin, Spikes, Rapid Spin, Spikes, and you guessed it Rapid Spin, is predicted to become one of the top internet memes in 2027. It is said that children will no longer spout “Six Seven”, but instead, “Spike n Spiiiin!”. That is, despite the gif being highly satirical in nature. As Abraham Lincoln spoke of in his Gettysburg Address, “you mustn’t believe everything you see on the Internet”. There are also the chess memes surrounding GSC NU, often directed at Pokemon such as Primeape.

These memes contribute to the hype and “aura” surrounding GSC NU. Could you imagine the explosive explosion of “LOLS” in the Smogtours game discussion room?

#2: GSC NU is a, simply put, better than other tiers.

GSC NU is a highly competitive metagame. Its balanced and competitive, with the better player usually being the one to win. The metagame is also diverse, with many playstyles and Pokemon available to use. In fact, it is more spectator friendly than other tiers. Barring any Shuckled situations, GSC NU is a generally fast paced tier. It remains fun to watch though, as Pokemon such as Primeape or Xatu are capable of swinging games, in a manner that would make the best sports players blush. A GSC NU game is never truly over until its over. Whether you are counting or not counting Normal type violence, GSC NU games often result in explosive amounts of chaos. Plus, is it really much different than GSC OU? The best Pokemon is a guy who can use Curse sets, Curse + Rests sets, sets with Thunder, and sets with Explosion. Weezing is just like Snorlax. Pineco is just like Forretress. Its really not different, OU players can jump in with ease. They can jump in even easier with the various resources for this tier, like the GSC NU Bible from 2021.

#3 THE GSC NU MOVIE.

In the future, there is going to be a film adaptation of GSC NU. See this thread for more information. https://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/a-gsc-nu-movie.3776344/.

Does any other SPL tier have this? No. GSC NU is superior in this regard.

In conclusion, GSC NU is a prime fit for SPL. Competitive, spectator friendly, and chalk full of top players…what’s not to love. I’d love to hear everyones thoughts on this!

On one hand GSC NU is a great tier that should be allowed in SPL (and frankly its an outrage that it isn't).
On the other hand it would give more opportunities for Shengineer to play and that is unsportsmanlike.

So I will unfortunately have to say we shouldn't add GSC NU to SPL because letting shen have more opportunities to cheese people is not fair.

I agree with this proposal. As time passes we have to learn from how tournaments go and strive to make them better. With that said, it's clear that in SPL there's certain tiers that get more attention while other tiers have a bad public image/aren't well perceived by most people. Hell, some even say they shouldn't even get tagged in the tournaments discord when these games happen.

So it's just inevitable that these less-liked tiers get replaced eventually. So with all that, GSC NU should replace SV OU in spl, the clear worst tier in the tournament.

Hi there, DAWNBUSTER
I don't have a reply as a member of a TD team, but I wanted to let you know that your Attachment is broken and inaccessible. Having parts of your thread be unable to be seen makes your points harder to understand and muddies the surrounding context that no longer serve to explain, but rather confuse. Please take a look into fixing the image so TD and public conversations can happen with more full information on this proposal.

The above gif features the GSC NU match between Estarossa and DiannieRatson from GSC PL III. In the gif, two Pineco's click Spikes and Rapid Spin against each other for four turns. The gif has the caption of GSC NU at the time, indicating that this is a common occurrence in GSC NU. This gif was created in late 2022, and it was created satirically. Despite this gif being satire, I have seen more than one person actually take it seriously. I have legitimately seen some believe GSC NU to be this Pineco Rapid Spin war metagame. As such, I have decided to rid GSC NU of this harmful stereotype and set the record straight. This gif does not at all paint a accurate picture of GSC NU. I don't know what part of this gif is funny to be honest, but evidently people like to spam it.

First off, Pineco is not mandatory in GSC NU. SpikeLess teams have proven themselves to be solid in this metagame. You are not going to see two Pineco's in every single game. Second, the scenario in this gif almost never happens. It is almost never a good idea to get into a Pineco war. Let's look at the game that this gif was birthed from. On turn four, Estarossa brings in Pineco to abuse the sleeping Kingler, while Diannie also brings in Pineco. I don't really know why both players committed to this, seeing as both had a Pokemon that could OHKO Pineco (Houndour on Diannie's Side, Ninetales on Estarossa's side).

There isin't much wrong with just accepting no Spikes, and then bringing Pineco back in at a later turn. Let's look at another game where something like this happened. [Gen 2] NU replay: estarossa vs. Lunala - Pokémon Showdown (pokemonshowdown.com) Both players get into a Rapid Spin war early on...but Estarossa just switches out early on and still gets Spikes up later on. Basically the only time a Rapid Spin war happenes is when both players double Pineco in at the same time. Switching Pineco into the opposing Pineco as it sets up Spikes is a bad play; if the opposing Pineco wins the speed tie, it can Explode and KO your Pineco. Now, you are playing with Spikes on your field, and none on the opposing one. It is a bad play that comes with too much risk.

There is little reason to ever engage in these Rapid Spin wars. There are numerous ways to stop this scenario from happening. Graveler 2HKOs Pineco and can Spin away Spikes. Pokemon like Fire Blast Weezing, Ninetales, Magmar, Flareon, and Rapidash can OHKO Pineco. Pokemon like Sudowoodo, Pupitar, and Graveler can absorb Pineco's only offensive move, Explosion. Pineco itself frequently uses Toxic, so the scenarios with dozens of turns of Pineco's thudding into each other never happen.

The scenario that is presented in this gif very rarely happens in current GSC NU, and if it does, it was because of a misplay. This gif is far from an accurate representation of GSC NU. I have played hundreds of GSC NU games this year, and I can not show you a single one where this scenario happened. A better GSC NU gif would be one that somehow showcases a fun, diverse, and competitive tier. If you get into Pineco Rapid Spin wars, play better games and build better teams.
