ZU [ADV] Lead Wailmer [QC 1/2]

[SET]
Lead (Wailmer) @ Lum Berry
Ability: Water Veil
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Water Spout
- Hydro Pump / Surf
- Ice Beam
- Self-Destruct

[SET COMMENTS]
Wailmer is a strong threat against slower leads like Flaaffy and Snorunt thanks to its powerful offenses and bulk to stomach hits from other leads such as Ponyta and Volbeat. Water Spout allows Wailmer to function as a strong wallbreaker during the early game, being able to target slower threats such as Castform and Mightyena, 2HKOing them. Hydro Pump is a strong attack for Wailmer once it gets chipped as it doesn't require Wailmer to be healthy to utilize the move. Surf can be used instead of Hydro Pump for reliability at the cost of not being able to 2HKO Ariados and Castform. Ice Beam allows Wailmer to threaten a 2HKO on Grass-types such as physically defensive Gloom and Tropius. Self-Destruct allows Wailmer to lure in special walls such as Dustox, Porygon, and Sunflora, trading with them and breaking holes into the opponent's defense. A Hasty nature allows Wailmer to boost its speed without weakening Self-Destruct. While situational, Water Veil prevents Wailmer from being crippled by Will-O-Wisp from Koffing, maintaining pressure with Self-Destruct.

Wailmer functions best on offense teams that benefit from its wallbreaking capabilities in the early game. Physical attackers such as Aipom and Doduo benefit from Wailmer wearing down physical walls such as Koffing and Mightyena. Salac Berry sweepers like Beedrill and Anorith benefit from Wailmer breaking down physical walls such as Ariados and Onix. Wailmer struggles to handle bulky Grass- and Water-types like Wartortle and Gloom, making special attackers such as Flaaffy and Quilava excellent partners. Electric-types such as Elekid and Voltorb are capable of OHKOing Wailmer, making Grass-types such as Gloom and Sunflora effective answers to them. Other physical walls such as Koffing and Rhyhorn are capable of stomaching hits from stronger Choice Band threats like Anorith and Aipom. Paralysis support from Castform, Gloom, and Porygon allows Wailmer to outspeed and destroy faster threats.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Earthquake is helpful for luring in and eliminating slower Electric-types such as Modest Chinchou and Magnemite. Roar could be helpful to deter setup sweepers such as Corsola and Drowzee. Mystic Water can be used to secure more favourable rolls to Flaaffy, jumping it from a 25% chance to OHKO with Water Spout to a 75% chance. A bulkier set could allow Wailmer to stomach hits easier and create trades with opponents outside the lead slot. Salac Berry might be useful against Choice Band leads such as Volbeat and Anorith with some defensive investment.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Special Walls** - While they can be taken out with Self-Destruct, special walls such as Delcatty, Lombre, Porygon, and Wartortle are capable of taking Wailmer's Water Spout, forcing it out.

**Grass-types** - Lileep is capable of stomaching Wailmer's Water Spout and Self-Destruct, and it can safely use Recover to repeatedly thwart off attacks. Sunflora avoids a 2HKO on Ice Beam, and it can use Synthesis to replenish its health.

**Electric-types** - Chinchou is able to bring itself in on Wailmer's Water Spout and Ice Beam, to which it can outspeed with a Timid nature and OHKO it with Thunderbolt. Other faster Electric-types such as Elekid and Voltorb are also capable of threatening Wailmer with Thunderbolt.

**Water-types** - Choice Band Seaking and Clamperl are capable of winning the 1v1 against Wailmer, forcing it to click Self-Destruct or to give up momentum for the team. Wartortle is capable of answering all of Wailmer's attacks and it can use Protect to deter it from clicking Self-Destruct. Staryu is faster and threatens a 2HKO on Wailmer using Thunderbolt.

**Physical Wallbreakers** - Without significant physical investment, faster leads such as Aipom and Doduo are able to threaten an OHKO on Wailmer with Double-Edge, forcing it out.

Salac Berry sweepers like Beedrill and Farfetch (is Farf the only notable user other than beedrill? it's just so low on the VR compared to other stuff) benefit from Wailmer breaking down physical walls such as Ariados and Onix. these should be split up into two different categories ^^^
