[SET]
name: Offensive Utility
move 1: Double-Edge / Return
move 2: Toxic / Hidden Power [Ground]
move 3: Heal Bell
move 4: Protect
item: Leftovers
ability: Intimidate
nature: Adamant / Careful
evs: 252 HP / 20 Atk / 44 Def / 192 SpD
[SET DESCRIPTION]
Mightyena is a staple Pokemon in the metagame, due to its very solid defensive and offensive stats, and access to the very exclusive Heal Bell and Intimidate. These traits allow Mightyena to stand in the face of dangerous offensive threats like Abra, Flaaffy, Castform and Quilava, while being threatening in it's own right. Frailier offensive Pokemon like Beedrill and Meditite are threatened by its decently powerful Double-Edge. Return is a safer option to dissuade these Pokemon, not having recoil, but is less immediately threatening. Defensive switch-ins that aren't too scared of Mightyena, like Corsola and Magnemite, are threatened by a decently powerful Hidden Power Ground. Toxic can threaten walls that want to sit on Mightyena for a long time like Porygon, Noctowl and Wartortle. Heal Bell is great status relief for poison and paralysis weak Pokémon alike, being a great and rare piece of team support. Protect is useful for scouting Fighting and Bug moves and gaining recovery with Leftovers.
Mightyena is a versatile Pokemon, fitting on balance and offense alike. It is however, prone to getting worn down with no access to consistent recovery. Poison types don't mind taking its physical attacks and are immune to Toxic. Pokémon like Ponyta and Abra can wear down walls early and appreciate not having to worry about paralysis as often. It also can form strong defensive cores with Toxic-weak Pokémon, notably Drowzee, who can pass wishes to Mightyena and spread paralysis, while Mighty threatens things more actively. Poison types pair greatly with Mightyena, being a Fighting and Bug resist that Mightyena can cover the Psychic weakness for.
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
Howl can make Mightyena into more of a threat and sweeper, Howl does have the downside of being quite slow to get going and not super easy to pull off a sweep with late game. Roar ruins setup sweepers like Corsola, Tropius and Rhyhorn that think Mightyena is free setup opportunity. Taunt is a fringe option over Protect to disable Substitute, healing and setup moves, however it's only lasting for a short period of 2 turns and you become even more prone to getting worn down overtime without protect.
Checks and Counters
===================
**Bulky Poison Types**: Mightyena really can't threaten the likes of Gloom, Koffing or Ariados with much damage, all of which being neutral to Hidden Power Ground and immune to poison. Gloom can heal chip with Moonlight and Koffing can with Pain Split. Ariados can't heal, however its Signal Beam does significant damage.
**Normal Resists**: These Pokemon aren't exactly scared of normal moves, and depending on your second move slot can switch in and threaten Mightyena. Anorith is a dangerous offensive threat that doesn't care about any of Mightyena's offensive moves. Defensive Pokemon either don't care about Toxic or don't care about Hidden Power Ground, depending on the Pokemon.
**Setup Sweepers**: Pokemon like Corsola, Tropius and Rhyhorn can easily setup and KO Mightyena with relative ease.
**Revenge Killers**: Without Intimidate as a cushion, fast offensive Pokemon like Aipom and Volbeat out speed and threaten a 2HKO.
