[SET]
Rain Sweeper (Lombre) @ Leftovers / Lum Berry
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 140 HP / 252 SpA / 116 Spe
Modest Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Hidden Power Grass
- Ice Beam
- Rain Dance
[SET COMMENTS]
Lombre is an excellent Swift Swim sweeper thanks to its great offensive coverage, as its STAB Hidden Power Grass nails Water-types. In rain, Lombre's Hydro Pump is even strong enough to 2HKO special walls like Porygon and Delcatty. Ice Beam covers Grass-types like Gloom and Tropius. Rain helpfully starves defensive Pokemon like Gloom and Dustox of healing from their weather-dependent recovery moves, so Lombre can use Rain Dance to help stifle them and set up its teammates. 116 Speed EVs makes Lombre faster than Voltorb and the rest of the unboosted metagame in rain. The rest of Lombre's non-offensive EVs are dumped into its HP to let it take hits from Castform, Noctowl, and Dustox better. 140 HP EVs notably make Lombre bulky enough to withstand a sun-boosted Fire Blast from Sunny Day Ponyta before it can set up with Rain Dance. Leftovers gives Lombre the sustainability to switch into Hidden Power Grass from Abra and stay out of range of a follow-up Psychic. Lum Berry is helpful to absorb status move from special walls like Porygon, Dustox, and Delcatty so that Lombre isn't hindered during its sweep by paralysis or stalled out by poison.
Lombre is a staple on rain teams as a sweeper that takes advantage of and overwhelms Water-types like Seaking, Wartortle, and Clamperl. Horsea can easily team up with Lombre to overload specially defensive Pokemon like Delcatty and Dustox. Voltorb is an excellent lead for rain teams that can set up rain for Lombre and greatly weaken a foe for it with Explosion. Clamperl can punch holes in defensive cores so that Lombre can more easily sweep, and it has the physical bulk to tank a hit from Doduo and Aipom for Lombre. Seaking pairs well with Lombre as a fellow Swift Swim sweeper, complementing it with its powerful Megahorn and solid bulk for setting up Rain Dance. Outside of rain teams, Lombre is a decent setup sweeper that benefits from wallbreakers like Aipom, Doduo, and Ponyta softening up teams to the point that Lombre can clean up easily. Lombre struggles to beat special walls like Noctowl on its own, leaving it reliant on Electric-types like Flaaffy and Magnemite as well as physical attackers like offensive Mightyena and Anorith to deal with them when rain isn't up.
