[SET COMMENTS]
Staryu's great Speed, solid Special Attack, and STAB Surf make it a threating fast attacker against foes like Quilava, Anorith, and Doduo. Thunderbolt is a powerful and coveted coverage move for a Water-type like Staryu, enabling it to pressure opposing Water-types like Clamperl, Seaking, and Wartortle. Ice Beam is an alternative to cover Grass-types like Gloom and Lileep, and it hits Tropius harder than Thunderbolt. Substitute helps Staryu capitalize on switches it forces against Fire-type foes, and it gives Staryu useful protection against revenge killers like Abra and Doduo. Recover keeps Staryu healthy against passive foes that can't overwhelm it, such as Wartortle and defensive Mightyena. Natural Cure is neat utility that can enable Staryu to absorb status moves from Noctowl, Quilava, and Koffing. Leftovers provides Staryu with some extra recovery on top of Recover and synergizes with Substitute.

Staryu is a good fit for offense teams thanks to its ability to check other Water-types and absorb status. Wallbreakers like Meditite, Cubone, and Anorith can open Staryu up to clean in the late-game. Staryu struggles to break through special walls like Porygon and Gloom on its own, so it appreciates special wallbreakers like Quilava and Clamperl that can tear holes in them. Poison-types like Ariados, Beedrill, and Tentacool can switch into Gloom and proceed to take advantage of it for Staryu, while Staryu makes a good offensive answer against Rock- and Ground-types like Rhyhorn, Onix, and Cubone. Notably, Ariados can bring Staryu in safely with Baton Pass. Thunderbolt variants of Staryu can deal with Water-types like Wartortle and Seaking, which is appreciated by Fire-types like Ponyta and Quilava as well as Rock- and Ground-types like Rhyhorn and Cubone. Staryu also appreciates the way Rock-types like Rhyhorn and Anorith can intercept Quick Attack from priority users like Doduo.

Other Options
=============

Staryu has the flexibility to run coverage and utility options over Substitute. Thunder Wave punishes Gloom, Dustox, and other defensive answers to Staryu, while Toxic is useful to put special walls like Noctowl, Porygon, and Drowzee on a timer.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Special Walls**: Porygon, Dustox, and Delcatty sit on Staryu and have reliable recovery, while specially defensive Noctowl is bulky enough to avoid a 4HKO from Staryu's super effective coverage moves most of the time.

**Grass-types**: Without Ice Beam, Grass-types like Tropius and Lileep wall Staryu. Specially defensive Gloom isn't even 2HKOed by Staryu's Ice Beam.

**Electric-types**: Chinchou resists Surf and easily deals with Staryu's coverage moves. Flaaffy and Magnemite can both tank a Surf and OHKO Staryu back, while Elekid and Voltorb both outrun Staryu

**Faster Threats**: Abra and Ponyta both outspeed Staryu; the former OHKOes Staryu, and mixed variants of the latter can KO Staryu with Double-Edge after just a bit of prior damage. Quick Attack users like Doduo and Volbeat can pick off weakened Staryu.

Staryu is a good fit for offense teams thanks to its great Speed tier, powerful special attacks, and good Water typing (this is basically a reiteration of the first sentence above, maybe talk about how it's a good check to waters, status absorber, etc). Wallbreakers like Meditite, Cubone, and Anorith can open Staryu up to clean in the late-game. Staryu struggles to break through special walls like Porygon and Gloom on its own, so it appreciates special wallbreakers like Quilava and Clamperl that can tear holes in them.
