It's morning in Terracotta City. A local legend purports that this city was built by giants, who sculpted earthen dirt and clay into bricks with their bare hands. From what you've seen, you can believe it; everything here is so big, bigger than anywhere else in Karca! It's as if the whole city was made for giants to live in. You're waking up in the biggest hotel room in the region, in the biggest hotel building in the region... and (unfortunately) next-door from the biggest water park in Karca.

All through the night, the sound of splashing and yelling has afflicted your partner, Hunter, with terrible nightmares. His mumbling and groaning kept you awake as well. What a pain...
Hunter: +1 Stress.
Courtney: +1 Stress.

Well, the night's over. It's the start of a brand-new day! You can leave this bothersome hotel room behind you and work off some of that stress.

As for how you do that, that's for you and Hunter to decide. When you arrived at the hotel, the concierge gave you a brochure with a few advertisements in it. Flipping through it gives you some ideas. Yes, you should visit...

Options:
  1. The Tirannos family's Quintuple-Story Water-Park. ("Splashin' fun-in-the-sun for the whole family! Kids' admission is half price!")
  2. Shakespeare in the Park, sponsored by representatives of Team 0n3. ("The classics, edited and transliterated for modern sensibilities -- culture made accessible!")
  3. Tera Carbonara ("A five-star feast of colors and flavors to satisfy both the eyes and the stomach! Advance reservations strongly recommended.")
  4. Crime Street ("Don't go here. We're including this in the brochure as an advisory for tourists to AVOID this area. Please route around this area, and have a fantastic time here in beautiful Terracotta City!")
  5. Somewhere else, your idea.

"hunter are you okay don't worry we will find a place to go.

:sv/houndoom: can we go somewhere else?

magmagruntf-rse.png
Hunter do u want to go to a safari park?

:sv/houndoom: please can we go?

Courtney will take hunter to the safari park so he can calm down.

Hunter will look around in the safari park.

You toss the brochure into a trash bin. Being strong means making your own decisions.

Idly you walk the streets of Terracotta town, hoping to find a park. It's not long before you find one. Filled with lush greenery, and sporting dozens of tree-shaded benches where one can rest, this park seems like the perfect place for you and Hunter to stay. While you sit on one of the benches, Hunter runs around to go sniff at the grass and trees. He immediately finds and begins chewing on a scrap of discarded fast food packaging.
Hunter: -1 Stress.

While you lounge about, you see a few passersby stop to point at you. They whisper amongst themselves. This doesn't surprise you; wearing full Team Magma garb out in public like this tends to attract attention. It comes with the territory. You pull your hood over your eyes in an attempt to get some much-needed rest.

But shortly, you are prodded awake. You open your eyes. Standing over you is a tall man in a police uniform. (Police? You hardly see any of those in Karca these days.)

"Ma'am, do you have a license to sit on that bench?"

> "License?"

"Yeah, a license. This park you're in is private property owned by the Tirannos family. As is this bench." The officer raps on the bench with his baton. "So, if you haven't paid your license dues, then I'll just have to take you to the station for processing."

The other people in the park anxiously disperse.

A license to sit in the park? That sounds like a load of hogwash to you. Still, this guy does look like serious business... What will you do?

oh my god sorry officer but this is my partner. We were in a hotel and that hotel was infested?

Courtney will try to talk to the officer and explain what happened.

Hunter will look around and then stand next to Courtney

The police officer shrugs at your explanation. "Yeah, yeah, sure. Why don't you explain it all down at the-- wait, is that Pokemon yours?"

Hunter positions himself beside you. The sight of your devil-horned hound makes the police officer hesitate. His imposing demeanor is replaced with soft-voiced timidity.

"I see. Well, uh... You watch yourself, alright? I'm gonna go look for some easier targets to harass..."

The officer walks away in a hurry, leaving you alone and a bit puzzled.

...Well, mostly alone. The only other individual who wasn't scared off of the park grounds, a weathered old man in a tattered shawl, comes over and sits down on the bench next to you. Oh my god, this man reeks. His stench is just awful. You feel yourself becoming dizzy. Hunter, who (regretfully) has a canine's sensitive nose, begins to dry heave.
Hunter: +1 Stress.

The old man's back crackles as he settles into his seat. He sighs. With a raspy whisper, he speaks to you: "That right there was one of the Tirannos's men. The Tirannos family lives here and they're filthy rich. They own everything in this town -- everyone. They've got dirty cops strongarming people every block. You're strong, so you can stand up to them; but most folks here aren't so lucky. If you wanna do something about them: meet me on Crime Street. The password is 3 taps on the street's manhole cover."

You try to speak, but your throat catches on the man's awful stench and you gag. The old man, seeing this, presses a piece of paper into your hand, stands up (with much effort), thanks you, and leaves.
Inventory: +Forged City License

What an unpleasant series of encounters. Well, at least your nose is clear again. What now? Shall you take up the old man's invitation? Try to forget him and enjoy the other attractions in Terracotta City? Or, maybe just stay here in the park a bit longer?

You relax for a bit at the park. It's quiet, with nobody left to bother you.
Courtney: -1 Stress.

---

It's a little past noon when you arrive at Crime Street. This place, looks... bad. (As one would expect.) The streets are filthy, the ground covered in litter, and every window is shattered, boarded up, or both. And then, there's the people. You see a Mr. Mime stumble drunkenly out of a bar and smack his head on an invisible wall. Across the street, two Lv100 Shuckles spam Defense Curl and Protect against each other, as a circle of cheering onlookers throw wads of cash at them. A little kid tugs the bottom of your shirt to tell you about how he can "install custom firmware on your 3DS surprisingly easily." Appaling! You've never seens such lawlessness outside of an evil Team Hideout before.

Hunter sniffs around for food, but only finds a severed SlowpokeTail. He growls and smacks it around with his paw, seeming to enjoy the sport.
Hunter: -1 Stress.

As instructed, you knock on a sewer manhole three times. It slides open. The old man from before beckons you from inside the sewer.

As you descend into the sewer, you see that it is (thankfully) dry. Looks like it's been in disuse for some time. You set foot and take a look around.

You are inside a large tunnel of cement and stone. On both ends, you can see that the tunnel splits off into multiple directions. Your breathing echoes off the walls of the sewer ominously... As for the old man who invited you in here, he is seated by a small campfire. He still reeks, but it seems your nose has become mostly acclimated to the stench. (You're not sure whether to be grateful or worried.)

"You're finally here," the old man grunts. "Took your sweet time, didn't you? Whatever, a few hours isn't much difference.

"I've been mapping out these sewers for years," he goes on to explain. "Aside from Crime Street, this here the only place the Tirannos family doesn't have their eyes watching. And crucially, it has a path leading directly to the center of the Tirannos Water Park. That park is the main source of their income. Take it out, and their empire will crumble."

> "What do you mean?"

"I mean, I aim to sabotage the water park." The old man pulls out a vial of purple liquid from under his shawl. "Concentrated Muk extract. If we inject this into the park's main water supply, it'll turn all their water into corrosive acid. I've spent years trying to produce this formula, but now that I finally have it... ugh, my bones and joints are too old for a heist. That's where you come in. We'll enter together through the sewer, I'll cause a distraction, and you get into the main building and inject the poison.

"Now, before you say anything: I know better than to ask favors for free. Let's talk rewards. I have a lot of connections, and whatever you ask for, I can likely see about getting it for you. Whether it's forged credentials (like that License), black market goods, or smuggled weapons that you want, I'll call in some favors to make it happen. So, what is it you're after?"

des121 will you take the man up on his offer? Or do you have other plans?

Courtney then will pour the potion from the muk in the new way that hunter found.

"What? I've spent almost a decade working on this plan, we can't just-- oh my GOD don't sniff that! Stop-- don't-- It's poison!! Why would you-- aggghhh!!!" The old man rushes to restrain Hunter from sniffing the poison vial. He barely manages to in time. Exasperated, he clutches his face in his hands.
Old Man: +1 Stress(?)

"Be calm, Ronald... deep breaths... Okay fine. You're right. There's another way. The Tirannos family also owns a fancy restaurant: Tera Carbonara. It's where they meet up with all their foreign investors and high-level business partners. If we poison the restaurant's food, it might scare the Trannos family's investors and make them unwilling to do business. Plus, ordinary customers won't want to dine there anymore, so we'll be hitting the family's finances on two fronts at once. Do this for me, and you'll be doing the town a great service. Plus I'll make sure you, personally, are rewarded for your effort. Can you do this? Please?"

The old man is begging you now, literally on his hands and knees. What's your decision? Will you accept the job, refuse him, insist on more changes, or do something else entirely?

:sv/houndoom: I must fight and battle!

Courtney will negotiate and help the Oldman while hunter will distract the people at the restaurant!

Courtney will pour the potion on the food.

"That's all you want? Shoot, that's easy!" The man produces a pen and a scrap of paper from his pocket. He scribbles a few words, folds up the paper, and then gives it to you. "I know someone the next town over who runs a Pokemon Arena. Good friends, we were! If you give them this Letter of Recommendation, they'll definitely show you the full VIP treatment."

"Oh, and before you go: Thanks, and, good luck. I don't suppose you and I will see each other again. I'd accompany you, but it's not like I'd be allowed into a luxury restaurant. Hah! Could you imagine?"

---

Tera Carbonara: the finest (and most expensive) restaurant in the city. Uptight waiters in tuxedos taxi plates of pasta through a decadently decorated dining hall. Just now, one lucky patron is to receive her meal after an hour's long wait. This one is drool-inducing lobster and truffle ravioli, with a side of gold-leafed caviar, served atop a plate made of stained glass which shimmers ethereally in the room's soft light.

The ecstatic diner prepares to eat. But, a sound disturbs her? Scuffling by the entryway. Shouting. Unexpectedly, a pitch-black dog with devil's horns smashes through the door and into the dining hall! Several security officers try to tackle it but miss -- they crash into one another and fall in a heap onto the carpet. The dog zigzags between the legs of the dining tables. He bumps through a waiter, who spins round and round on his feet like a whirlwind in a cartoon. And then, majestically, the dog leaps onto this poor diner's table; he rubs his snout into her ravioli, splashing pasta sauce everywhere; and then he grabs the plate in his jowls, flings it against a wall, and watches it shatter into a hundred-thousand pieces.

Midst the chaos, you stride in. Whose dish to poison...? You recall that the old man briefed you on various individuals who he expected might be present. You recognize a few:
  • Baron Pigney, a stout man in a top hat. He watches Hunter's antics and laughs. You recall that he owns a diamond mine and is one of the Tirannos family's wealthiest business partners.
  • Chief Drawer, a stern fellow in a police chief's uniform. It's said that she never takes her uniform off, even when she's off-duty. Currently busy stamping out a fire caused by a candle which tumbled off her table.
  • Ms. Krismas, the Tirannos family's head propogandist. She's hiding under her table in fear. Strewn across the top of the table are a number of drafts for posters and fliers she's been working on.
You expect that you'll only have time to poison 1 dish. You can try to go for more, but that increases the risk that someone might catch you in the act. Should you go for one of the people you recognize? Or perhaps target a stranger's dish?

After making sure everyone's eyes are on Hunter, you gently remove the poison vial from your purse. Quickly, you pour its contents onto the Baron's dish. Then, with the deed done, you toss the empty glass vial under the table.

Throughout all this, Baron Pigney doesn't even spare you a glance. Enthused as he is by Hunter's antics, with his chair tilted back he laughingly yells out pointless advice to the security staff: "You gotta grab him from behind! Watch those jaws! Whoa, be careful there! Ha!"

It takes four security guards to wrestle Hunter to the ground. With great effort they attach a harness and leash to him, and then of the guards additionally affixes a steel muzzle to his face to prevent any biting. Hunter, who snarls defiantly, continues to thrash but is unable to escape the human dog-piling.

Baron Pigney jovially nudges you with an elbow. "Hah! Wouldn't wanna be the owner of that ferocious mutt. That unlucky Trainer is probably looking at jail time, or worse. Of course, if there's no owner, the wild animal will probably be sent to the pound. I know there are people who would pay good money to own such a fierce-hearted specimen! Perhaps, if nobody steps up as its owner, I'll put in a bid myself."

Baron Pigney laughs as he plunges his fork into his pasta.

While Hunter looks at you with pleading eyes, you ponder your options. Stepping in to help him would expose you as his Trainer, which puts you in quite the vulnerable position. But, you also can't stand around and do nothing while your Pokemon is captured, can you?

"Oh no hunter is trapped? Ik i will tell the guards hes my dog.

Courtney will tell the guards hes her dog and hunter will try his best to get out

Hunter thrashes, but despite his best efforts, 4-on-1 is just too much to overcome. Unable to lift his body, he cranes his neck to try and nip at one of his captors. Alas, even that fails. His fangs bump uselessly against the steel bars of his muzzle.

It seems you have no choice but to speak up.

> That's my dog.

The guards seem surprised and quite angry to hear this. One of them stands up and begins to scold you. "So, this is all your fault? Well, you're in a lot of trouble, young lass," he says. "I mean, jeez! Look at this: wasted food! Soiled designer carpets! Broken plates!" He points to each one in turn, yelling himself into a frenzy.

"You're looking at at least 1,000 Resources worth of damages. A drifter like you probably owns like 5 Resources on a good day, max! How are you going to pay for all this? Can you even afford a lawyer? Come on, what do you have to say for yourself?"

There's a pause as he waits for you to respond. You don't get a chance to. Someone else catches the room's attention.

Behind you, Baron Pigney lurches. His expression looks indescribably pained. He tries to say something. His mouth opens and closes like a goldfish's as he gasps for breath. The words don't come out. His dinner fork tumbles out of his hand and clatters onto the floor. He clutches at his chest as he falls off his chair. Falls, falls. Down onto his knees. Doubled over. Wrists curled inwards with pain. And then, with one final, terrifying spasm, his whole body melts into a puddle of disgusting purple sludge.

Pandemonium erupts. All at once, the diners all rush to flee the building. They crowd up at the door, blocking you from immediately escaping. That's probably fine though; the four guards holding onto Hunter have been (mentally) defeated, and so they make no effort to stop you from rescuing your partner.

That just leaves one problem: Police Chief Drawer, who gets up from her seat and speaks a few words into her walkie-talkie. You see her approaching you from across the room. The angry look on her face means business.

Are you going to take your chances with the police chief? Forget all that and try to butt your way through the congestion at the entrance? Or, try something else entirely?

well hello chief u see this here is my letter of recommendation by the police captain and me and my dog were just looking to help!

Courtney shows the chief a letter from the police captain

"Uh-huh. Is that so." Chief Drawer gives you a skeptical look.

> Yeah.

"You're saying the police captain sent someone in an extremist terrorist leader's uniform to help me out, on my day off, while I have no ongoing assignments."

> Yep.

"...Okay. Alright. I'll humor you. Just for giggles, show me the 'letter of recommendation' my wife, Police Captain Boxer Drawer, gave you."

You don't actually have such a thing, so you present Chief Drawer the closest thing you do have: your Letter of Recommendation.

Chief Drawer frowns. She clears her throat and begins to read aloud from it:

"Hullo,
Please let this nice Team Magma leader into your illegal Fight Club for me.
I owe her a favor cuz she agreed to poison some rich people and unseat the Tirannos family's crime empire :) "

Chief Drawer stops reading for a moment to glance up at you. Then she resumes reading. "Much appreciated," she continues. "...And then there's a picture of someone turning into a puddle of goo with a bag of money next to them and a few stink lines above it, and then it says... 'XOXOXO. Sincerely, Old Man.'"

Police Chief Drawer hands the paper back. She gives you a customer-service smile and says with half-hidden venom, "Did you know? After I end your criminal life here and now, the paperwork I'll have to fill out at the precinct is half as long as this."

[Negotiation with Police Chief Drawer will no longer be possible.]

Chief Drawer clicks the button on her Nest Ball. Out pops a hefty Octillery, which latches its sticky tentacles around Chief Drawer's right arm. "Alright, Chekov!" yells Chief Drawer. "Weapons free! Sic 'em!"

By lifting her arm, Chief Drawer aims the clinging Octillery like a weapon towards Hunter. "Fire!" The Octillery fires a ball of sticky ink at your partner. The projectile explodes on impact, causing Hunter to yowl in pain.
Hunter: +2 Stress.

oh my god we didn't do anything bad because the mayor was trying to steal from us

Courtnery will try to reason with the police chief and tell the police chief about the old man and hunter will eat some food

Chief Drawer points her Octillery at Hunter and orders it to fire. Octillery just lets out an airy sigh.

"Oh, gosh dangit! Out of PP already? You useless... Pokemon!"

Hastily, Chief Drawer ducks behind a bar counter. You hear her rummaging through cupboards, clanging glass and metal objects against one another (presumably in search of something). You're unsure what she's doing, but grateful for the break in the action -- although probably not as relieved as Hunter, who uses this opportunity to scarf down an abandoned plate of gourmet pasta.
Hunter: -1 Stress.

> You try to reason with the police chief and tell the police chief about the old man.

More clanging and ruffling from behind the counter. Then silence. Did she not hear you? You can't see her behind the counter, so you wait anxiously. Finally:

"Okay. I believe you."

> Really?

(pause) "Yeah, really. I believe you. Sorry for misjudging you. It sounds like you've had a real rough day today. The other cops won't understand that, but I do. I've been there before. Let's work through this together -- as friends. All I'll ask of you is: that you return your Houndoom to his Poke Ball, and then walk over here slowly around the bar counter with your hands up, and then we'll... talk things out, respectfully, like civilized people. No tricks, no surprise attacks, just two people having a nice and comfy chat. Doesn't that sound good? Can you do that for me? Do you trust me?"

Hunter isn't swayed by the cop's honeyed words. As a Dark-Type, he should know a dirty trick when he sees one. But then again, maybe he's just growling because of his Water-Type foe. This is the outcome you wanted when you tried to reason with the chief, right? So, what's there to lose by trusting her?

Hunter scarfs down one last mouthful of pasta before getting zapped back into his Poke Ball.

"I knew you could be reasonable," says Chief Drawer from behind the bar counter. "Now, be a dearie and walk over with your hands up. Slowly."

> No. Instead, I will make a deal with you and tell you team rocket if you call off police force.

"...Call off the police force? Hah! Are you for real? Look outside; they're already here."
[Police Reinforcements Clock -> 2/2 -> 0/2]

Indeed, as you turn your attention to the entryway, you see a squad of armored officers standing at the ready. One of the officers tosses a small metal canister into the room. As it tumbles across the floor, clouds of green smoke filter through holes on the ends of it. The smoke fills the air. Breathing it in makes you feel severely lightheaded.

You wake up in the back of a cop car.

You reach for your Poke Ball, but your hands are cuffed together and unable to move.

"Hey, you're awake," says Chief Drawer. As she speaks to you, she keeps her eyes on the road. "I knew you'd end up in the back of my car one way or another as soon as I laid eyes on you. Did you really think you could get away with your actions? That nobody's tried a stunt like this before?"

"The silent treatment? Fair enough. ...Ah, sorry for tricking you earlier. (Truth be told, if you had gone around the counter like I asked, I was definitely going to smash you over the head with a pot of hot coffee.) Anyways, you wanna talk? We are alone now. Now's your chance -- for real this time. But, I'm the one asking the questions. (If I let you do the talking, I know you're gonna lead me on some wild side tangent.)

"I've got 3 questions for you. Don't even think about lying, or making stuff up. I happen to have, you could say, expertise in interrogation.

"Here are my questions. Listen up:
  1. What's the name of the person who sent you? ("Old Man" isn't enough for me to go off of. Surely they gave you a name?)
  2. Why did they order the hit?
  3. Where were you planning on going next?
"How you answer will determine what happens to you next. Oh, by the way, you'll also notice I took your stuff. Nothing personal, just can't have you pulling out a hidden weapon or something. You know how it is. Anyways, my questions? I don't have all day."

des121 Are you going to answer? Stay silent? Maybe try to escape?
