* Volcanion uses Air Balloon to lure Ground-types, such as Landorus-T, Ursaluna and Donphan, while maintaining its strong matchups against Fairy- and Steel-type Pokemon.
* Steam Eruption is Volcanion's most consistent STAB move. It hits the Ground-types that Air Balloon lures as well as Fire Types like Volcarona and Skeledirge.
* Sludge Wave hits Primarina, which Volcanion walls with its ability and typing, super effectively. It also offers an essential second coverage option against Encore + Disable Alolan Ninetales and Iron Valiant.
* Substitute tanks Ursaluna's Giga Impact and Choice Band Donphan's Head Smash, allowing Volcanion to attack freely after the recharge turn and recoil damage respectively.
* The defensive EVs allow Volcanion to survive Adamant Choice Band Meowscarada's Giga Impact and Timid Choice Specs Iron Valiant's Focus Blast. 96 Speed EVs allow Volcanion to outpace Adamant Ursaluna while maximizing its Special Attack. 232 Speed EVs let it outpaces fast Corviknight.
* It should be noted that while Air Balloon flips a lot of matchups, it does not automatically beat all powerful Earthquake users. Garchomp and Haxorus are both still highly favored to win against Volcanion.
* Iron Valiant is a classic partner with Volcanion. Iron Valiant covers the Dragon-types that Volcanion struggles with, while Volcanion covers the Steel and Fairy-types that Iron Valiant loses to. Air Balloon lets it synergizes particularly well, as it covers the few Ground-types that can present issues for Iron Valiant without an offensive set.
* Despite its typing, Volcanion can struggle against Iron Crown without the help of a stat-boosting item like Assault Vest or Life Orb. Therefore, Dark-types such as Hoopa-U and Urshifu-S make for strong partners.

* Iron Valiant is a classic partner with Volcanion, covering the Fairy and Dragon type Pokemon that the other are unable to handle. Air Balloon synergizes particularly well, as it covers the few Ground types that can present issues for Iron Valiant without an offensive set.
* Despite it's typing, Volcanion can struggle against Iron Crown without the help of a stat-boosting item like Assault Vest or Life Orb. Therefore, Dark Types such as Hoopa-U or Urshifu-S make for strong partners.

-you arent consistent vs sylveon at all. life orb is a straight 50/50 between fake tears/cm and sub/sludge. custap is a series of 50/50s that can still get rolled if sylveon just clicks attacks every turn.
