[OVERVIEW]

Thanks to it being the fastest Pokemon with access to Snow Warning, Alolan Ninetales is the preferred weather setter on hail teams. Its high Speed is particularly important, as it allows Alolan Ninetales to set Aurora Veil before attackers such as Kyurem-B and Heatran can attack, making it significantly easier to set. Alolan Ninetales's Speed also allows to outspeed and threaten Landorus with Blizzard, which also deals a considerable amount of damage to Pokemon like Rillaboom and Naganadel. However, Alolan Ninetales lacks any significant defensive utility due to its poor defensive typing and meager bulk, neither of which are attributes that a Pokemon that needs to be switching in to reset the weather would want. Other weathers removing hail also significantly hurt Alolan Ninetales due to its heavy reliance on hail. On top of that, its mediocre Special Attack allows Heatran and Volcanion, among other Pokemon that resist its attacks, to come in with minimal risk. Due to these flaws, Alolan Ninetales is restricted to hail teams that can make up for its lackluster offense, with Landorus and Urshifu-R beating the Fire- and Steel-types that threaten Alolan Ninetales and Kyurem taking advantage of hail with its own Blizzard. Alolan Ninetales can also be used on certain setup spam teams, thanks to Aurora Veil allowing Pokemon such as Dragon Dance Kyurem-B and Shift Gear Genesect to set up more easily.

[SET]
name: Hail Setter
move 1: Blizzard
move 2: Encore / Moonblast
move 3: Aurora Veil
move 4: Protect
item: Light Clay
ability: Snow Warning
nature: Timid
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

* Blizzard is Alolan Ninetales's best attacking move and a strong spread move in itself, hitting common Pokemon like Rillaboom and Landorus.

* Encore gives Alolan Ninetales the ability to punish Pokemon using Fake Out and Protect, while Moonblast allows it to OHKO Urshifu-R and deal a decent amount of damage to Kyurem-B.

* Aurora Veil reduces the amount of damage Alolan Ninetales's teammates take, which can make attackers like Urshifu-R and Kyurem much harder to handle.

* Protect can stall out Trick Room and Tailwind turns and allow a teammate to switch in to support Alolan Ninetales while keeping it safe.

* Light Clay extends how long Aurora Veil is active, reducing how often Alolan Ninetales is required to set it in a game.

* Snow Warning allows Aurora Veil to be used and makes Blizzard perfectly accurate for Alolan Ninetales and Kyurem.

* A Timid nature is needed to outspeed Landorus and Urshifu-R so that Alolan Ninetales can either set Aurora Veil before they attack or offensively check them.

=============

Icy Wind allows Alolan Ninetales to provide speed control for its teammates, a role it can perform quite well thanks to its high Speed. However, Icy Wind far worse than Encore and Moonblast across the board thanks to the prominence of Trick Room teams and it leaving Alolan Ninetales worse off against Kyurem-B and Urshifu-R.

Overview
  • Rewrite final line a bit to (also) be about offensively potent Pokemon that make up for 9ta being generally unthreatening on its own; this is where you can also segue kyurem blizz spam which is one of the strongest attackers that 9ta actually enables.
Set
  • Blizzard targets
  • Encore punishing TW is hard to recommend because the faster ones are Ice-weak and the slower ones you can't actually Encore lol. Think of something else to punish.
OO
  • Icy Wind also makes it worse into Ursh

[Overview]
  • Urshifu-R isn't the best example of what Ninetales-A can outspeed and set Aurora Veil before since it can crit through it.
  • Mention vulnerability to other weathers due to reliance on Hail to be effective.
  • Aurora Veil being useful for setup teammates should be noted.
[Set Comments]
  • Protect is a much more common target of Encore than Substitute is.
