PU Altaria

:ss/altaria:
[OVERVIEW]
Altaria works well as a role compressor in PU thanks to its part-Dragon typing, fair bulk, and reliable recovery, which allow it to check even the most popular special attackers in the metagame, like Jellicent and Charizard. With access to both Defog and Heal Bell, Altaria can act well as entry hazard control and a cleric all in one. However, its typing leaves it weak to STAB and coverage moves from common Stealth Rock setters like Gigalith and Mesprit with Dazzling Gleam. It also tends to be quite passive, as it has neither pivot moves to gain momentum for its team nor a threatening offensive presence. On top of that, it's also easily overwhelmed due to its unimpressive stats, especially after its Heavy-Duty Boots has been removed.

[SET]
name: Defog
move 1: Defog
move 2: Roost
move 3: Hurricane / Flamethrower
move 4: Toxic / Flamethrower / Heal Bell
item: Heavy-Duty Boots
ability: Natural Cure
nature: Calm
evs: 248 HP / 164 SpD / 96 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Hurricane synergizes amazingly with Defog due to the latter lowering the foe's evasion, making Hurricane land more often. Flamethrower gets rid of Steel-types like Togedemaru, Ferroseed, and Perrserker while also hitting Grass-types like Eldegoss and Tangela. Toxic helps handle walls that neither Altaria nor its teammates can take care of easily, which may include Audino, Aromatisse, and Regirock. It especially helps against entry hazard setters like the aforementioned Regirock and Gigalith, as they have no reliable recovery, meaning Altaria wins in the long run. Even though hazard setters may have Toxic themselves, Heal Bell allows Altaria to get rid of it and act as a cleric for its entire team. Heavy-Duty Boots allows it to come in and out without worrying about Stealth Rock, letting it Defog and check Pokemon without having to constantly use Roost. The EVs critically allow Altaria to outspeed Modest Jellicent while still making it as specially bulky as possible. Altaria fits best on bulky offense or balance teams that have reliable checks to common hazard setters, so Pokemon such as Jellicent, Quagsire, Palossand, and Trevenant make for good partners. Notably, Aggron benefits from Altaria clearing hazards and bringing in Fairy- and Steel-types, as it takes care of them with Heavy Slam and Earthquake, respectively. Aggron also takes care of Pokemon like Ribombee, Glastrier, and Regirock so Altaria has an easier time on the field. A notable alternative set for Altaria is a Fire Spin plus Perish Song set. Even though it's quite gimmicky, relies on Fire Spin's imperfect accuracy, and needs the foe to lack a pivot move, it works well at taking care of foes.

Altaria has a niche in the PU metagame, as it is a defogger with the Dragon-type. This type allows it to ignore Flying-type's weakness to Electric and gifts if multiple convenient resistances to Fire, Water, and Grass. However, its weakness to Ice- and Rock-types holds it back because of how prevalent their attacks are in PU. Defog is for hazard removal to make sure they don't chip your teammates. Hurricane is powerful STAB and synergizes really well with Defog lowering evasion, making Hurricane land more often. Flamethrower is another choice that accomplishes getting rid of Grass-types like Eldegoss and Tangela while also hitting Steel-types like Togedemaru or Magneton and taking finishing off Adamant Choice Banded Perrserker on the switch in. Earthquake is another option to hit Steel-types and also hits Rock-types that would love to come in and threaten Altaria. If you do so decide to run Earthquake, an Impish nature is preferred over Bold for more damage output. Heal Bell allows Altaria to act as a cleric while Toxic helps take care of walls Altaria or its teammates cannot take care of. Finally, Roost is for longevity. Heavy-Duty boots allows it to come in and out without worrying about Stealth Rock, but Knock-Off can remove them and cripple it. The EVs allows Altaria to outspeed fully invested neutral-natured base 50 speed Pokemon while being as physically bulky as possible. An alternative spread of 248 HP / 184 Def / 60 SpD / 16 Spe makes non-Stakeout-boosted Choice Specs Thievul's Dark Pulse a 3HKO, but isn't suggested as it isn't very common at all in PU. Pokemon that can tank an Ice Beam or Ice-type moves are very much appreciated as it is weak, twice over, to Ice, so Pokemon like Gallade who have high enough special defense to tank the incoming hit and retaliate with a super effective STAB Close Combat are appreciated. Other options like Jellicent or Ferroseed who can tank an Ice Beam are great partners as well. Steel-types, in general, are amazing partners for Altaria as they resist and hit Rock-, Ice-, and Fairy-types super effectively that threaten it; Ground-types are also great partners for it because they threaten Steel- and Rock-types that it either can't do enough damage to or is threatened out by, respectively.

Hey it's great you have a lot of examples but keep in mind we're writing minis, so this should be using the mini template. Please check out the analysis resources to get an idea of what qualifies as filler etc and look at the example mini analysis before putting into QC.

Just wondering, any sets other than defog?
Nah, Defog is the only set consistent enough to warrant focus.

Speaking of the Defog set, the QC team would like for it to look like this:

[SET]
name: Defog
move 1: Defog
move 2: Roost
move 3: Hurricane / Flamethrower
move 4: Toxic / Flamethrower / Heal Bell
item: Heavy-Duty Boots
ability: Natural Cure
nature: Calm
evs: 248 HP / 164 SpD / 96 Spe

The Speed investment is for Modest Jellicent above all else, though there are a few other Pokemon it lets you outspeed like Adamant Trevenant. Going specially defensive over physically defensive is also ideal right now with how good Jellicent, Charizard, Galarian Articuno, etc. are. As for the moves, Earthquake is a little too niche considering that you have Flamethrower/Toxic to threaten Steel-types/Rock-types anyway, but mentioning it (along with Fire Spin + Perish Song) in Set Comments is fine.

If you have any questions, feel free to let me or another member of the QC team know.

[OVERVIEW]
While none of Altaria's stats are anything to write home about, it works well as a role compressor in the PU metagame and has a rare type in Dragon. Its part Dragon-typing allows it to ignore Flying-type's weakness to Electric and nets it a total of four useful resistances to Fire, Water, Grass, and Fighting. (make this more about what pu mons altaria's typing helps against, it sort of reads like general dex info rn.) Also because of its part Dragon typing, it has a diverse, colorful movepool letting it hit many Pokemon in the tier. (the connection you draw here might not be immediately obvious to readers, and the point at large isn't really that important.) Getting access to both Defog and Heal Bell, Altaria acts well as a hazard clearer and cleric all in one. It also gets access to support moves such as Haze and Roar to act as a phazer and take get rid of set-up sweepers. (this isn't worth highlighting here, as neither haze nor roar are slashed on the main set.) Because of Altaria's aforementioned unimpressive stats, it's well rounded and can choose to use physical or special moves, or it can be physically or specially defensive. (how do unimpressive stats make a pokemon well rounded?) However, its typing leaves it weak to common good attacking types in Rock and Ice which means it fears Stealth Rock and many coverage moves.

there's some good info in here, like how altaria is able to compress roles well, but this overview needs work. there's the dex info stuff that i mentioned earlier, which ultimately sort of pads the overview out. there's also the fact that you don't mention some of altaria's other big flaws, like its passiveness and bad mu against common hazard setters like gigalith and regirock. for further clarification on any of this or other stuff, feel free to message me on discord.

[SET COMMENTS]

Defog is for hazard removal to make sure they don't chip your teammates. Roost is for recovery, so you can stay alive for as long as possible. (this is dex info and not necessary to state.) Hurricane is powerful STAB and synergizes really well with Defog lowering evasion, making Hurricane land more often. Flamethrower accomplishes getting rid of Grass-types like Eldegoss and Tangela while also hitting Steel-types like Togedemaru or Magneton and taking care of Adamant Choice Banded Perrserker on the switch in. (replace magneton with ferroseed and list the examples like "Togedemaru, Ferroseed, and Perrserker".) Toxic helps take care of walls Altaria or its teammates cannot take care of while Heal Bell allows Altaria to act as a cleric. Heavy-Duty Boots allows it to come in and out without worrying about Stealth Rock, but Knock-Off can remove them and cripple it. (mention that this makes it easier to switch in and defog or check stuff.) The EVs allows Altaria to outspeed Modest Jellicent above all else while still making it as specially bulky as possible as to beat common Pokemon in PU like Jellicent, Charizard, and Galarian Articuno. (it'd be better if you mentioned that alt beats these mons in the overview rather than here.) Notable moves are Earthquake which hits Rock- and Steel-types but isn't suggested as Altaria already has the choice of Toxic and Flamethrower to threaten them, respectively, and fazing moves like Haze or Roar to clear stat boosts, but Altaria requires other moves to do its job better. (i know i said to move eq down here, but honestly, just delete it for the reasons you state that it sux.) Another notable option is a Fire Spin plus Perish Song set. Even though quite gimmicky, it works well at taking care of foes but relies on Fire Spin's imperfect accuracy and your opponent not having a pivot move. If you do decide to run a Perish Song set, you miss out on the utility that Altaria could have given your team as, depending on whether you have Protect or not, you only have one free move because you're forced to run Perish Song, Fire Spin, and Roost (the stuff before what i highlighted is good, but this is sort not necessary to state. you never run protect on this set, and you're still able to run defog in the last slot, so you don't lose out on *that* much utility.).

[OVERVIEW]
While none of Altaria's stats are anything to write home about, it works well as a role compressor in the PU metagame and has a rare type in Dragon. (you don't need to start the overview off on a negative note to get the main point here across, it feels sort of unfair with altaria not being like the worst thing you could ever run.) Its part Dragon-typing allows it to act as a check to quite a myriad of Pokemon such as Lanturn, Jolteon, Eldegoss, Galvantula, and Scrafty. (1) Getting access to both Defog and Heal Bell, Altaria acts well as a hazard clearer and cleric all in one. Even though Altaria has no stats that stand out, it is quite well-rounded and can run physical or special moves, or it can be physically or specially defensive. It, in fact, can beat common special attackers in PU like Jellicent, Galarian Articuno, and Charizard. (2) However, its typing leaves it weak to common Stealth Rock setters like Gigalith or Regirock and ones with coverage moves like Mesprit with Dazzling Gleam. Also, it tends to be quite passive when sent out to battle as it can neither pivot to gain momentum for its team nor be threatening.

sentence (1) can honestly be deleted, as you end up repeating the point of it in sentence (2). speaking of, move (2) to where (1) was and reword it so that it mentions that altaria's typing, decent bulk, and access to recovery allow it to the check the examples you mention in (2). it's true that alt's stats aren't that impressive, but you don't really need to mention that until you talk about its flaws (you especially don't need to mention it twice before you even get to talking about flaws). you also don't need to mention being able to run physical and special moves or phys def/spdef spreads because you really only use alt for its specially bulky set rn.

mention in the flaws section that it can be easy to overwhelm altaria due to its meh stats, especially if it takes a knock off.

(emphasize that flamethrower hits steels before mentioning that it also hits grasses, the steel part is definitely more important.) Toxic helps take care of walls Altaria or its teammates cannot take care of (such as...) (mention at least one non-toxic immune hazard setter in your examples.) while Heal Bell allows Altaria to act as a cleric. Heavy-Duty Boots allows it to come in and out without worrying about Stealth Rock and Defog or check stuff without having to constantly Roost. The EVs allows Altaria to outspeed Modest Jellicent above all else while still making it as specially bulky as possible. i edited it with what i though u meant so u can go check that, i'd just like confirmation.
Yeah in the long run Altaria wins and keeps rocks off. There is some potential for them to also have Toxic or be Idef+BPress and force Altaria out once, but in general Altaria can do well vs Gigalith and Regirock
