Altaria @ Leftovers
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 248 HP / 244 SpD / 16 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Roost
- Defog
- Toxic / Heal Bell / Haze
- Dragon Pulse

Altaria excels as a Defogger in PU due to its solid defensive stats and typing, which allow it to take on Pokemon such as Pyroar, Eelektross, Spiritomb, Choice-locked Primeape, and Poliwrath lacking Ice Beam. Altaria also boasts a useful ability in Natural Cure, letting it pivot in and out of status moves to protect its teammates. Alongside Roost, this lets Altaria beat popular users of Stealth Rock such as Regirock and defensive Mesprit, further solidifying its role as a Defogger. Altaria brings valuable defensive utility to the table as well, with its ability to remove status with Heal Bell and disrupt some of PU's top setup sweepers like Gurdurr and Calm Mind Spiritomb with Haze. Altaria mainly sees use on balance and stall teams where its ability to compress defensive roles is highly sought after, while more offensive teams still appreciate Altaria clearing away entry hazards and wearing down foes with Toxic. Teammates that can cover for Altaria's Ice-, Rock-, and Dragon-type weaknesses like Pyroar, Mudsdale, and Clefairy are essential, while in return, Altaria can Defog away harmful entry hazards or use Heal Bell to cure status for the former two.

Returning to PU in the July tier shift, Altaria excels as a defensive Defogger once again, thanks to its exceptional defenses and a great defensive typing that allows it to take on numerous threats in the PU metagame, including Pyroar, Kingler, Eelektross, Spiritomb, and Poliwrath. (ice beam is pretty good and pretty common coverage on kingler and poliwrath, so mention that altaria can reliably handle them if they lack the move.) Altaria also boasts an incredibly useful ability in Natural Cure, letting it pivot in and out of harmful status moves to protect its teammates. This, in tandem with Roost, enables Altaria to beat popular users of Stealth Rock such as Regirock and Defensive Mesprit, further solidifying its role as a Defogger. In general, Altaria brings invaluable defensive utility to the table, with its ability to alleviate teammates of status conditions with Heal Bell, or disengage some of PU's top setup sweepers like Gurdurr and Crotomb with Haze. Altaria mainly sees use on balance and stall oriented teams, where its ability to compress defensive roles is highly sought after. (maybe throw in a quick line about how it can also work on bulky offensive teams.) Offensive teammates like Pyroar and Gurdurr can threaten Ice- and Steel-type attackers such as Jynx and Aggron with their respective STAB moves. (smth smth, these pokemon can make up for altaria's lack of offensive presence, especially in the case of non-toxic variants.) Defensively, the likes of Clefairy, Pyukumuku, and Mudsdale can switch into Dragon-, Ice- and Rock-type moves from Pokemon like Drampa, Alolan Sandslash, and Lycanroc. (not sure how i feel about using pyukumuku as an example of an ice resist given that popular ice-types like aurorus and froslass have ways around it.) In return, Altaria can utilize Defog to remove entry hazards that could potentially cripple these teammates, or use Heal Bell to cure them of troubling status conditions. (clefairy doesn't mind either of these bc of magic guard.) (this is more of a minor thing, but you don't mention altaria using toxic anywhere, which is a major factor of what allows it to beat those same stealth rock setters you mentioned before.)
do this and that's qc 1/1 unless anyone else has input or smth.

Offensive teammates like Pyroar and Gurdurr threaten Ice- and Steel-type attackers such as Jynx and Aggron while providing a solid offensive presence, something which Altaria lacks bar Toxic. In return, Altaria can Defog away harmful entry hazards or use Heal Bell to cure teammates of status.
just gonna chip in here before gp gets to this. remove kingler and mention something different, because Ice Beam is becoming more and more common. i'd also just specify calm mind rest talk spiritomb, this is towards a larger audience and they might not know what cro... refers to. qc 2/1.

i brought the character total down to around 1150 (was like 1700 earlier lol) so besides that i implemented the above
