The year is 2029. For over a century the United States of America has been a global superpower, exerting its influence on the world stage and gaining unprecedented levels of prestige despite many, many, many objectionable acts on the way there. During this time, people have found it hard to imagine a world where the dollar isn't the world's reserve currency, or where McDonald's isn't literally fucking everywhere. However, the past election year has been disastrous; Donald Trump was forced to leave office due to term limits, but nobody ran to replace him as President because they don't want to be the one who cleans up the catastrophically huge mess he made of the government, economy and foreign relations. As a result, the nation now falls into anarchy and turmoil as various factions across the former USA vie for space in the power vacuum:

California has always boasted about how it's the fifth-richest country in the world despite not being a country, and it's often been claimed that the Golden State would be better off on its own. But now, with the other states dissolving all around them, it's time for those tech bros and hipsters to stop yapping and start proving they can govern (and conquer) properly! If modern-day San Francisco is any indication, they still have a lot left to prove...

Florida seceded from the crumbling Union shortly after the 2028 non-election, and it has since become a sovereign nation ruled by Trump (that's His Majesty King Donald I to you, peasant) and his family. Golf and NASCAR are now the only sports in this new monarchy after all others were denounced as "un-Floridian" and promptly banned. Because this is Trump we're talking about, he won't be content with the land he has now, so expect a fight with him if you want to win any of the southern supply centers- erm, I mean states.

The Heartland Coalition was formed by several Midwestern states after the non-election of 2028 as a final stronghold for the mainstream Democratic party. Based in their new capital of Milwaukee, Heartland stands for traditional American values such as democracy, diversity, and a legislature that remains in a perfect stalemate at all times. While their central position makes them vulnerable to a dogpile from all sides, it also presents them with many tempting growth opportunities!

New York became the new home of America's East Coast elites after Washington DC fell into irrelevance, and with no Supreme Court left to stop him, Governor Zohran Mamdani has fully committed to making New England an ultra-affordable socialist utopia. Whether that'll actually happen remains to be seen, but until then he really wants the neighboring states to join him. The same talking points that won him fame in Manhattan will still work in rural Ohio, right? Right? Oh well, I guess he'll finally have to build some armies...

Texas began life as its own country, so this whole "independence" thing isn't exactly new to them, but it's been a long time since the 1840s. With so many different directions to expand in, who are they going to use their gargantuan stockpile of guns on this time? I guess they'll have to invade one of their neighbors! Everything's bigger in Texas, and that includes the urge to expand!

British Columbia is what remains of Canada after the long-awaited secession of Quebec. After moving their capital from Ottawa to Vancouver to get the government further away from those damn French people, they're now preparing to invade the northern United States and maintain as much Canadian territory as possible against Quebec. They're as bloodthirsty as anyone else on this board, but Canadians will at least give you a heartfelt "sorry" as they take all of your dots.

Speaking of Quebec, the newly independent state sees itself as the reborn United States in many ways: a democracy-loving people freeing itself from oppression by an uncaring government, and deeply yearning to fulfill a manifest destiny. These moose-lovers of the north will stop at nothing until French becomes the official language of all of North America. As if this map wasn't already set in an apocalyptic scenario...

Much like the Canadian factions,
Mexico sees America's fall as a great opportunity to gain power. Still holding a grudge after Trump tariffed their economy into the dirt, the central government can't wait to start staking their claim in the former states. To get there, however, they'll have to move their forces through the vast northern desert, so it'll be a year or two before they can properly establish themselves north of the old border.

Cuba is often forgotten in modern geopolitics, but it turns out that their leaders are pretty savvy; seeing the obvious instability in the USA after the 2024 election, they began a massive military buildup, particularly in their navy, in case of a total American collapse like this. That means they're now well-equipped to assert themselves as major players in the Caribbean and the Atlantic, and if they play their cards right, they might even be able to get a foothold on the US mainland!

Peru wouldn't normally be very relevant on this map, but this is a Smogon-specific alternate timeline, which means bluedoom's excellent Peruvian play in the first American Diplomacy game has snowballed into Peru becoming the most successful country in 21st-century South America. As a result they now find themselves in a great position to interfere in affairs up north, with control of the Panama Canal allowing them to operate with fleets on either side of the continent. Could they be the true inheritors of the American legacy after all?

Who will prevail and become the next great ruler of the western hemisphere? Hopefully it'll be you!

(Note: This lore was all made by me specifically for this game. If you want to check out the original lore behind this map from its creators, you can find it here on WebDip!)
For a rundown on the basic rules of Diplomacy, check out the official rulebook!

If you want to spectate the game with full info, chat with other Diplomacy players, and be notified about future games, come join our Discord server! https://discord.gg/vydanhnUxr

Important Notes:
  • Please follow all Smogon and Circus Maximus forum rules, both here and in the Discord.
  • The game will use the Fall of the American Empire IV variant map made for ten players.
  • Powers will be assigned to players by the GM after the sign-up period.
  • Private communication is key to success in Diplomacy, but I want to keep it centralized in one place for a better postgame and spectator experience. Therefore, joining the game Discord is mandatory for players: https://discord.gg/mRMXhShstB. There will still be a game thread where players will also be free to post.
  • Orders should be given to me privately on Smogon or Discord before each specified deadline. If you fail to do this, it will be treated as an NMR (No Moves Received) and all of your units will hold in place.
  • Spring and Fall order phases will last for 48 hours each after the previous results have been posted in the game thread. Retreat and build phases will last for 24 hours each. Deadlines will not be extended to accommodate late order submissions, but the game may be paused for a certain period if at least 2/3 of Powers vote for it. Special extensions will be given during holiday celebrations if necessary.
  • I will be using webDiplomacy to process orders and adjudicate the game, with screenshots of the board being posted in the game thread each turn.
  • If you miss multiple phases of orders in a row, I will sub you out or find you a partner to help you finish the game.
  • You are not allowed to screenshot OR copy-paste chat logs for use in the game. If I catch someone doing this, they will be warned and then subbed out if it happens again.
Unique Rules:
  • Due to the significantly increased supply center count on this map compared to Classic, 34 SCs are required for a solo victory.
  • Great Lakes - Fleets cannot move directly from one Great Lake to another, except from Lake Michigan to Lake Huron.
  • Canals - There are a few one-space canals that act like Kiel in Vanilla dip. This means that the spaces have no coasts and fleets can exit on any side: Panama, Ontario, Michigan, Upper Peninsula, Chicago (see below). There is also a canal between New York City and New York State. Fleets can move from one to the other.
  • Waterways- There are two waterways in this map where fleets can move as though there were a coastline in the listed territories. These rivers do not impede army movement:
    • Mississippi River (Chicago, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Deep South, Louisiana)
    • St. Lawrence River (Beauce, Montreal, NYS, Ontario, Quebec, Gaspe)
    • For example, a fleet could move from Tennessee to any of Kentucky, Missouri, Arkansas or Deep South.
  • Landbridges
    • Units can move between Ungava and Nunavut. This does not block movement between Hudson Bay and the Sea of Labrador.
    • Units can move between Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. This does not block movement between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.
  • Draws can be proposed at any time during a Spring or Fall turn. Once the draw is proposed, I will ask each player privately if they would like to end the game; if the vote is unanimous, the game will end. Draws will include all survivors.
  • Due to the high player count of the map, hydras will be banned to make the best use of the playerbase available to us.

Spring 2029 Moves
The game begins! One of the cool things about such a vast map is that most countries actually have a fair amount of choice as to which neutral supply centers they pursue, and the early years can play out in tons of different ways as a result.

Fall 2029 Moves
As each Power makes a rush for whatever neutral centers are within their reach, we already see some pain points emerging: BC and Quebec don't decide who gets Greenland, Mexico has three builds but with many Californian and Cuban units in close proximity, and Florida has two units adjacent to one of Heartland's claimed centers. We also see multiple convoys in the first year of the game, which is quite rare in my experience!

Winter 2029 Builds
If the first Fall moves are a preview of what's to come, the builds are there to see how accurate that preview really was. Is that fleet headed for my stuff, or are they just being defensive?

Spring 2030 Moves
This is the turn where cards start to be laid on the table, and allies coordinate moves while their targets frantically scramble for a tactical or diplomatic solution. Which side of that dynamic did each of our players fall on this time?

There's plenty to sink our teeth into this turn, including our first retreats of the game! Join me in observing key developments like a continued disagreement over Greenland, a hostile takeover of the Panama Canal, and continued scuffling between several powers in northern Mexico. Heartland, meanwhile, looks like they're just happy to chill out.

Some gather strength, others lick wounds, but all will again be cast into the fire for a third chaotic year of action! Of particular note is New York's choice to build a fleet and Cuba's total lack of interest in armies (at the moment).

Spring 2032 Orders
No way... really??? The impossible may actually happen? Greenland could be taken by somebody in the fall? This alternate timeline is getting pretty unrealistic, but anyway we also have the walls closing in on BC, Mexico and Peru. Eliminations this year aren't on the cards, but we may begin to narrow the field come 2033 unless something in the board structure changes.

Spring 2032 Correction
Sorry folks, it has come to light that ImaginaryNeon changed one of his orders before the deadline yesterday without me noticing; F Arctic Ocean is actually in Anchorage, thus letting Quebec's F Sea of Labrador into Greenland. All else remains the same, deadline is still tomorrow.
